Would you get this surgery for your child?

Nope. I think people should make their own decisions about cosmetic surgery on their own bodies. I would wait until she was old enough to make that decision herself.

honestly, I would do it, children are so mean and they will make fun of her. She will be embarrased. The younger they are, the less they will remember it!

I agree.

I am trying to imagine what this looks like and why a girl with medium or long hair couldn't have it covered if it is in the back of her head. I would also want to know what type of procedure is involved and how successful it is before making a choice. I know kids can become self conscious of various things so I would consider a simple low risk procedure to fix it.

I'd do it when she was young. I can't think of a good reason NOT to do it while she's not in school and subject to scrutiny:hippie:

I have seen the condition, and all of the hair parts away form the spot, and sticks up like a giant cowlick. The skin is very dark and leathery in the spot. It would be very difficult to cover, plus they spread as the child grows. I have very similar birthmark in from of my ear. It was the size of a dime when I was born, and is now about a half inch wide and and inchcand a half long. It would require graftingto fix now. I whish mom and dad had done it when I was small.

Yes, definitely. I'm not a super appearance-focused person, but I could see how that would really bother a little girl and kids can be cruel.

Yes I would do it. I believe I had a neighbor (30 yeaers ago) when I was little who had that. I remember when she was born she had a funny *spot* on her head. Now I was much older then her so I do not know if she was teased about it, but I can tell you I have not thought of this girl in YEARS and when I read this post it reminded me of her.

I would do it too, but I would make sure a pediatric surgeon does it or that this surgeon has operated on children in the past. I would also prefer it be done in a Children's Hospital if possible because of the anesthesia. Just to further minimize the risks.

MTE. I'd choose the doctor and hospital very carefully and make sure you know all your options. I'm sure at the very least there are different techniques different surgeons would use.

But I'd do it in a heartbeat and as early as possible.

To get away from the teasing side I had two friends while growing up and I noticed that people even adults always referred to them as "the girl with the...". They didn't do it to be mean and they certainly didn't do it in front of them, but it always irked e to no end. That was their defining feature period. I know they would have had them reoved in heart beat so they could just be who they actually were and not just a scar.

I would do it, too. It's not cosmetic, it's reconstructive. My dd has had 4 eye surgeries that didn't really do anything to help her vision, just uncrossed her eye and kept it healthy enough to continue to grow. Her first was at age 3. I agree with what the others said, make sure you have a pediatric anesthesiologist, as that's where the biggest risk is in surgery.

I'd do it. Wouldn't be thrilled about it, but I'd do it. It's hard being a kid with an obvious easy taunt.

My very first instinct was yes, but after I thought about it, I would really have to weigh all the facts first. My view is about 99% "your body, your choice". :)
I would need to know more, mostly because it is on the back of her head and the size you stated and her age. 2yos usually have thin hair, their "real" hair is still growing in. I wonder if it wouldn't be easily covered at around 5, given the size and placement?
