Would you buy your 5 year old a bunkbed set?

Would you buy your 5-year-old a bunkbed set?

  • Yes! I did and I'm so glad. The kids worship me now.

  • Yes! I would, if I had a worthy 5 year old to buy one for

  • No. I bought one and I regret the decision. What was I thinking?

  • No. Because cost, circumstances or other, never justified the bunkbed experience.

DD5 really loves bunkbeds and the design now seems to have railings everywhere except where the ladder is. So they're a bit safer than when I was a kid and had to sleep motionless for fear of waking up by slamming into the floor.

But they're so big and I feel like I've heard more complaints about them than praise.

What are your personal, deep-seated, never before shared feelings about . . . bunkbeds? :teeth:

I probably would buy it, but maybe have her sleep on the bottom bunk until she is just a bit older. But even if she slept on the top now, like you said it was different then when we were kids. With all of the safetly features I think she would be fine.

I think they are great if you think you'll be hosting sleepovers, or if you'd rather the sleepovers occur in your home.

I heard another reason for them at work one day: a woman complained about her husband's snoring and she said about every third day she can't take it anymore and warned her daughter to please sleep in the top bunk because she'd be taking over the bottom bunk. :teeth:

We had bunkbeds for DSs. We never had a problem of anyone falling out. My younger DS slept up top for a while and I was always afraid of him falling if he got up during the night. He never did.

The only thing that I hated about them was trying to put sheets on the top bunk.

Since we're losing the guestroom for the new baby - this is a really important consideration!! Score one point for the bunkbed . . .

My 4 and 6 yr old DSs share a room and we recently got them bunk beds. It saves alot of space in their room and they absolutely love them!

We got a great set off of ebay from a reputable seller and they can be taken apart and used as twin beds in the future!

My son just turned 5 and I'm currently looking for a loft bed for him. His room is small and could really use the extra space. I was a little concerned about my 2yo climbing up and falling off, but he does just fine on the playground equipment.

We had the bunk beds that had a bigger bed on bottom, turned sideways. Even if the one on top fell off, they would fall on a cushiony bed, so no worries there. But with the ones stacked on one another, with all of the railing, I don't see how anyone could fall off. That would take some major work.

You will also get mondo cool mom points from your DD for getting one! :thumbsup2

My 11yo dd has a trundle bed which works out great, especially when she has guests.

That would be another option. GL!

I really like getting mucho mondo cool mom points!

My timing isn't exactly coincidental.

If I order tomorrow, the set will be here between 2 weeks and 1 month.

Just like . . . something small and needy.

Before we moved the grils shared a room, and we had bunk beds, with the rails all around. She was five and did fine. No problems. :teeth:

Are you NUTS? You'll kill yourself on that thing in your delicate condition!

my girls got them last year. so they would have been 5 and 6 I guess. They adore them though they both prefer to sleep in the top bunk LOL

:confused3

Oh well theyre happy, it saves a ton of room and should they ever decide they dont want them anymore, a few screws out and theyre regular twin beds.

ours were up for a total of 15 mins. Boys(4&5) launched themselves off top bunk to grab ceiling fan, "lets see if we can fly like Superman". I hesitated for well over a years before putting them up, should have trusted my Mothers instinct. They now have twin beds although I'd love to have the extra space the bunks provided.

DS got a loft bed when he was about 8, and loved it. He has a small room and the loft bed gave him so much more room....his desk went under it. As he got taller, he just had to remember to duck, or be painfully reminded! He is going to college now, so we will probably take it down and use it as a twin bed. Never had any problems with him getting in, out or falling out. Only thing is, he has a ceiling fan, which we had to always make sure the off string was pulled when he was up there. He did use the fan when using his desk, just not when in bed.

One thing I learned the hard way, that is that I expected him to change the sheets, (at least occasionally :rotfl: :rotfl: ).......JERSEY SHEETS work the best, cause they're stretchy. No more problems. (except for the frequency of changes)

YES YES YES!! My DS' are 24 & 20 and they EACH had them in their rooms while growing up. Our home then, the rooms were not overly HUGE and we needed as much space and buying the bunkbeds was AWESOME!! It made the room bigger!! This way when they had friends sleep over, no problem. I am trying to remember BUT as others posted they slept on the bottom bunk until we decided it was safe for them (age wise) to sleep on the top bunk.

Even back then, I made sure I went to a speciality sleep shoppe to buy the beds so they would be something made securely and of high quality. We even bought something called bunk bed boards that went under the mattresses for additional support. When they outgrew the bunks, we then made them twins for a while and then got then each a double bed. :)

Oh, ya, NO ceiling fans in either of their rooms...UGH...

DD did that to her drapes. She decided to swing like Tarzan and ripped the whole mess down.

:lmao:

I'm sure she'd say she's much more mature now.

My daughter fell off the top bunk at a neighbor's house when she was younger and was rushed to the hospital for stitches in her right cheek.

Under NO circumstance would I ever have them or would I ever recommend them for anyone.

BTW: This set was pretty new at the time and had those railings, too.

Edit: had to change feel to fell. :rotfl2:

My DH has five brothers. They had three sets of bunk beds in one room when he was young. He has lots of good stories to share jumping from one to the other. You wouldn't have that problem unless you're looking to have four more children. :rotfl: I say go for it. :thumbsup2
