Would you buy this "Salvaged" Vehicle?

If you do decide to buy it you need to check your state's laws to ensure you can get a tag for it. I know in Alabama a vehicle with a "salvaged" title cannot get a tag and is basically just good for parts.

No. Aside from the obvious safety issues, once a car is salvaged, it has absolutely no value. You can put insurance on it but if it's ever in an accident or totalled again, it will be worthless.

I work in insurance. I have to break this upsetting news to people at least once a week.

As for safety, the only way I'd consider it...I'd want a copy of the appraisal that totalled it and I would want copies of the shop paperwork showing it was properly fixed. If there is frame damage, you don't even want to deal with it. If it's all cosmetic, then it's your call.

I would have it thouroughly inspected - check your state's rules for titling... it's $750 - not a lot of $$$$... I would be more concerend buying a $$$$$ vehicle with a "salvage" title. Who knows, maybe it was "totaled" several years ago - usually, rebuilt cars are newer and more expensive to begin with.

We had a car that was declared a salvage after an accident. We fixed it up and drove it for many many more years. We did have additional paperwork we had to file to get a new license plate.

I have brought a couple of salvaged vehicles. They have all been fine. Just make sure you check it out really good and use Carfax. As far as insurance goes you can get insurance on them, or atleast in Mo you can.

Since it has a sunroof, that would be a no. I am sure it leaks. And 750, not a chance.

I might buy a salvaged muscle car though. Esp. if it was 1967 Chevy Impala, the "Supernatural" car.;)

That is a high price for a 12 year old salvaged car with high mileage which may have severe issues and you may have trouble licensing and insuring :sad2:

Same here... Two years ago we bought two year old Ford Taurus, completely decked out with options, for about 25% of the sticker price. It had been in a front end collision. We bought it from a place that specializes in rebuilding "just barely totaled" cars. They showed us "before" photos and the front-end damage was limited to the radiator forward. The car drives fine, and the alignment is great. It drives straight "hands free" on the highway. Our mechanic checked it out and gave it a clean bill of health.

We have full insurance on it. The only thing we had to do was have our agent inspect it and take photos of the exterior and engine compartment. It has a "rebuild" title that's a different color to alert future buyers of its history, but I tend to drive cars until they drop, so it won't be an issue for us.

This isn't to say that you don't need to be careful when looking at a rebuild, but it was a great deal for us and two years on we have no regrets.

I have known many people who have purchased, registered, and insured "salvaged" vehicles with no problems at all.. Cars were safe and ran fine..

However, my concern with this vehicle would be the sun roof.. I have never known one single person in my entire life who did not end up with a leaking sun roof at some point in time - unless they traded the vehicle in within the first 2 or 3 years of purchasing it brand new.. If this car has been salvaged due to a wreck, you can just about bet the sun roof leaks..

We have had salvaged car after they were totaled and they were fine. We have also had sunroof cars that never leaked.

That said given that it is a 1997 Cavalier I would never touch it. One of my siblings had one and that was the worst car ever owned in their life. Once they could afford it they bought a new car. They were rated one of the worst cars of that time. So no matter what I would never buy one. JMO :)

I had a Cavalier. It was not too bad. No sunroof, not a convertible. It was the Z 24 model, it may been an 89.

Why was it salvaged???? Was it totaled in a wreck or did the sunroof leak and it flooded???? We have a truck with a salvaged title because it was totaled in a wreck, we got it fix it and it runs like a dream....so just be informed.
