Would this trick work?

Book at 11 months 1 night stays over a stretch of the trip. Then at 7 months call and have them switch points your using for the nights that are still free. Then stalk the website until you can change over all the points you want.

Example

around 11 months book 6 trips on BWV points

May 1
May 2
May 3
May 4
May 5
May 6

then at 7 months if any of the days are free or become free you call and have them use less important SSR points.

By the time the trip comes up (7 months) you will most likely be able to swap out all the points.

Even at busy times of the year (F&W, Dec) random days are always popping up.

Thoughts? :surfweb:

You could do that. Probably it would work. But it would be a lot of effort.

Such a strategy might be more worthwhile to save points from a much more expensive home resort (VGF), but not really for the cost spread between BWV and SSR.

Time is money. If you consider an annual exercise of seven phone waits with MS to swap out the existing reservations, plus potentially needing to stalk the website for some days to be fun, then go for it.

For me, there's no way the effort for this strategy would be worth the investment. It would be far better over the life of the contracts to simply buy and own more BWV, if that's where you want to consistently stay.

Resorts used for example sake.

In that case, this would be a very labor-intensive way to potentially expand the effective points at your more expensive resort.

However this assumes that DVC never gets its' act together and pulls cancelled home resort rooms into reserve for a period of time, to fulfill existing home resort waitlists before releasing them for non-home booking.

If that were to happen, you'd be "up a certain creek, without a paddle"...

Well yeah. And if Disney starts making us all stay in Grand Villas once ever 2 years we would ALL be "up a certain creek, without a paddle"

LOL

I don't think someone should buy based on the plan to do this.

I'm just thinking that say 1 year you want to save some points but still want to stay at X resort you COULD do this.

Then we totally agree. For a one time thing, this strategy would work just fine. My goal was to try to illustrate the reasons I thought your concept would be unwise as a general approach to long term ownership. But for once- sure, why not...

Wouldn't one draw back be that the points you use at 11 months out can not be banked anymore ? , or of course if your borrowing in points now they become this year use points and of course can not be banked. This is how I thought it worked but I am not saying I am a dvc expert.

Talking straight up UY points, Any point that has never been borrowed or banked can be banked as long as you cancel by 31 days out. If you modify or cancel your reservation 30-1 days before your check-in date, your vacation points will be placed in a Holding Account that must be used that use year.

DVC has a habit of combining nights in a row at the same resort so unless you used different leads on each night so they wouldn't be combined in which case you may not get things all transferred over and may have to check in and out everyday possibly changing rooms once you got there Seems to me it would not be worth that risk. If you really want more points at another resort then sell off one and buy the other.

I thought you weren't allowed to switch points on a reservation made at 11 months with 7 month points. I'm actually fairly sure the system won't allow you to do this.

That's the "trick" here. He's suggesting to switch the points only when a matching room is available at 7 months.

I actually think this would work...but only if there are rooms available still at 7 months and you have the points to cover it in a single use year with both resorts. furthermore, even if you can't get all the days with your 7 month resort points you will still at least save some of your "good resort points" you may want to hold on to. I'd try it. I wouldn't cancel what I already had booked UNTIL i was able to book with the 7 month point resort...

I think it is possible, but it is really complicated and it takes great deal of organization to do that. :grouphug:

Point intensive reservations would be worth the effort, smaller ones, not so much.

If this is a regular thing with the OP, wanting to book at 11 month at BWV, and not stay at SSR, I think I'd sell my SSR points and buy an add-on or resale contract at BWV. It would cost some $, but it sure would save time and aggravation in the long run.

You may end up having to change rooms, often. Not sure that would be worth it.

I don't think you need to book 6 different trips. You can book the whole trip under 1 reservation. I had a similar situation for our last trip. Booked BW standard view at 11m. Booked 2 nights BW standard view with some banked AKV points at 7m, called MS and they adjusted things and returned 2 nights worth of BWV points.

Oh that's great to hear.

Other note: I said book single nights so you could cancel and book online without calling MS if you wanted.

Also MS will combine rooms. so there is no switching of rooms.

I'm currently holding 6 reservations for 7 nights at BLT as I try to put together a trip by "stalking" the website. I only need 3 more days.

I still have 6 reservations all with SSR points, all with same room. They have not combined my reservations.

PS. I got 7 of my 10 nights in under 1 week of "stalking". When I started 0 nights were free. today 0 are free but I have 7 now. STALKING works!! lol
