Hello all-
I’m new the the DisBoards but am an avid WDW fan. I have a family of 4 and have heavily considered joining DVC over the last couple years. My end goal is this: to have enough points to book a 1 bedroom villa for a week at either the BCV or BWV during the summer months. I have previously stayed at OKW and wouldn’t mind staying there if need be.

So now leads into my question... I’ve been looking at OKW contracts on the resale market in the neighborhood of 250 points and above. If I purchased an OKW contract and booked a week at my 11 month mark and then tried to switch the BWV or BCV at the 7 month mark how likely would I be successful at doing so? It wouldn’t be the end of the world if we had to stay at OKW but my family just loves the location and amenities of the BW and BC Resorts. Thank you!

according to historical trends (which could change) -- you'd have a VERY good chance.

Summer months shouldn't be too bad, but booking an entire week is sometimes harder than it sounds. You might have 4 out of 7 days available, and have to waitlist the other 3, or split stay between two places to make it work. I play devils advocate a lot around here. It's definitely possible if you're open to putting in the work to get the reservation, or willing to split stay. DVC booking is weird. Like March is still pretty open for 1 bedrooms at those resorts, except that every Thursday at BWV Std is booked. The others days are free, but Thursday is just not avail.

The lowest cost point rooms go the fastest as well, so make sure to give yourself some extra points so you can book a Pool or BW view room if needed. Pool view rooms are wide open for all of Mar 2020 right now at BWV.

I'm generally in the buy where you want to stay camp, but for you, I think this would make sense. Just make sure before you spend tens of thousands of dollars you won't really mind if you have to stay at OKW instead.

If you ever think you might want to visit between September and early January at BCV or BWV, your strategy probably won’t work. You will need to own points at those resorts during the fall - and book close to the 11 month mark.

I have had great luck booking at the 7 month mark for the summer - not for the fall :)

Thank you all for the advice so far. I’m 99.9% convinced that I’m going to purchase a non-direct contract. I heard the pitch for Riviera back in June and was just very unimpressed with both the resort and the “gotchas” in the new contracts. I know I would be forgoing a number of benefits by going resale but our family only attends Disney once per year and a lot of the “perks” really aren’t applicable to us.

That your looking at summer and 1 BRs you should have good luck switching to BWV pool/garden views and probably good luck with either of the other 2 views too. BCV may have availability especially if you have some flexibility in the dates but BWV will be more likely. And since your ok staying at OKW if you can’t move I think your plan is fine. You’ll probably only be staying at OKW because you chose to stay put.

Got it. Do BWV Standard view often book up fastest? I ask because the point value is very similar to OKW 1 br

Yes. At resorts with room categories that have different point requirements the cheapest book up first. Still, summer and 1 BRs are a slower combination and you’ll probably see the standard 1brs available but because they are the most popular 1br you shouldn’t 100 % count on it.
