I always love coming here for opinions on things Im not so sure how to handle. So heres another one for you.

I was just at the mall and ran into a woman and her daughter who I used to work with. They told me tomorrow night some of our former coworkers were getting together at a restaurant for dinner/holiday party(they are doing a grab gift thingy) and they invited me. I would love to go see everyone, but I really dont want to eat(Im making myself stick to my diet strictly for the next 3 weeks). So, would it be rude of me to show up a little late, not to eat, just to hang out and catch up with everyone. Im figuring going late, they should be almost done eating when I get there, so it shouldnt be too awkward.
It has been exactly 4 years since I stopped working and its been that long since Ive seen some of them. Ive often wondered where they all are now, so as you can see, I really would love to go and catch up.

What do you think?

I think it would be fine, you could always go at the same time as the others and just have a salad.

I dont think it would be odd at all! Lots of people are on diets yet still manage to enjoy get togethers if anyone mentions it, which I doubt they will, just politely say " NO thanks " with a pleasant smile.

( Hows that for a diplomatic miss manners answer? ;) )

No one ever agrees with what I would do, but here goes:

If I wanted to see & hang out w/them, I'd go on time, but I'd order something light & on my diet. Plus, I talk so much, I probably wouldn't have time to eat much. :p

Go and have fun! Don't worry about your diet, I'm not saying to not stick to it. But I think most people have been on one at least once in their lives and I seriously don't think it would be a big deal.
You would be missing out if you don't go. :)

I agree with you Nuts. :)

<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font color=#006400>My BIL is on a diet where all he eats are shakes, and he just drinks his shake when everyone else is eating their meal. We enjoy his company so much that we don't even notice.

You might take whatever you eat with you and order a diet soda or tea or water... and enjoy the company. I'm sure seeing you is much more important to your friends than if you eat with them.

Have fun! :)

Thanks for all the opinions. I think I will just show up a little late and get out of eating gracefully. :)
