Would this be caused from a computer virus?

My brother is having trouble with his computer. Told him is sounds like a virus to me but I don't know that much about the stuff so thought I would ask here and then pass the info along to him.
Whenever he turns his computer on it will start loading and then a warning will come up saying the computer is going to shut down. It has a countdown on it, from like 30 or something and then when it reaches 0 it turns off. This started happening about a week ago but now it's so bad he can't even get to the desk top. Sound like a virus?

I'm no expert, but it could be a memory problem or a power supply problem.

Sounds like a virus I had a year or so back. Run a scan.

By run a scan, you mean virus scan? I'm not sure how to tell my brother to do that. The only problem is, he can't even keep the computer on because as soon as it's almost finished loading it shuts down. Thanks for the help. I will pass it along to him.
