Would my 5-year-old son be OK in ElecTRONica? He's a HUGE Tron fan right now but it says it's for Pre-teens and older.

What is ElecTRONica like?

My short answer: yes. Warning: There is alcohol at the event, as this is in DCA. It's pretty loud with music and dancing. They have an arcade with old school video games. There's face painting and sometimes performances. I felt completely comfortable having my 6 year old daughter with me, but everyone is different.

what is this thing? an how long will it be there?

Last summer DCA offered a night party to help promote and redistibute guests for WoC. In the fall they changed the party to promote the new Tron movie. I suspect it will run through most of Spring and they will put something different in for summer. All ages have enjoyed it. Keep in mind it is on the calender on DL's site, and is a weekend, Fri-Sun, show. The times indicate a special element of the whole thing but in total it runs all evening.

You could call this link the Electronica Superthread, lots of information.

If your 5 year old is okay with REALLY REALLY loud Daft Punk techno music, strobing lights, and fog machines, then yes.

Personally, my 5 year old (and my 6 year old) boys would run away from there like the place was on fire! :rotfl:

Be sure to catch the portal opening show. It is neat. I think it is only once on ElecTRONica nights.

I was wondering about this too! Thanks for the good post :)

He would, do note that there is alcohol but not like he can get any.. but people will be carrying a beer in theirs hands. But he will like the preview they have of tron and the games in the arcade and the hands on Wii games and xbox games! They do sell cokes and sods also, and nachos are super yummy!

electronica is like one big outdoor dance club--lots of dancing, the teens these days have this one dance it's like the running man meets 2010! its awesome..

We were there 2 weeks ago, and from our experience, here are my thoughts:

There is a 3D TRON Legacy preview show that I think your 5 year old would enjoy. I think it starts early evening - maybe 5:00? It is in the same theater that during the day houses the Muppets 3D show.

As far as the evening/party atmosphere that goes on - I would not take a 5 year old to/through it. We have 2 teen boys and we walked past/through it and that was enough. To me, it is more geared the 18-30 crowd (without kids) that has been to Disney 100 times and needs something more to do. We didn't want to waste our time in that area (very smokey) when we had paid admission to go to DCA and there are other/better things to do.

Out in front of Award Wieners and Schmoozies they did have a glow-in-the-dark frisbee demonstration going on (after dark, of course) and my kids enjoyed watching that for a few minutes. We went into a shop to try to buy one of these frisbees and were told that Disney doesn't sell the glow-in-the-dark discs/frisbees. Before I could even give my opinion, the CM said, "yeah, I know, dumb, right?" They sell a frisbee that has a battery in it so it lights up, but not the glow-in-the-dark kind. The CM said that the battery-operated ones weren't near as cool. Which is not hard to believe because there were no demonstrations going on with these ones. :confused3

Flynn's - the arcade was very busy and there were lines to play games. You can buy tokens to play, just like any other arcade.

We were there the week week of opening, so long before the movie came out. There was a cast preview of the portal show that we were able to watch.

My kids - DD10 and DD7 LOVED it. It was the oddest thing. Without having seen the either Tron movie yet - it seemed like a Disney version of a rave. My kids were attracted to the adult beverage glow drinks they were serving :)

I kept thinking "This is not for kids" but all the kids running around seemed to be having a great time. And there were lots of kids younger than mine.

There were moving spotlights on the ground that my youngest enjoyed chasing. They were jamming to the LOUD music.

Then we went into Flynn's. They loved it. My DD7 is now an expert on DigDug (a video game I had never heard of before). Security finally kicked us out of Flynn's and we closed down the park.

As long as your son is okay with LOUD - you should be fine.

We didn't care for it. We're both 22, no kids, and couldn't get out of there fast enough.

We figured we may as well check it out, since we like the bar/club scene and the music sounded good from farther away. So we watched the portal show and then followed the herd into the main area. We made the loop once and never went back. Too loud, too dark, and people were dancing all over. Not that there is anything wrong with dancing, and it normally wouldn't bother me. It's just the way they were dancing, throwing out their arms and legs all over, I almost got punched several times. Not to mention the people that were break dancing all over the ground too, many of whom were hard to see.

We went into the arcade too, because DH loves video games, but he didn't want to play any of them enough to stay in that area. We went back to DL for the rest of the night.

I might suggest trying to find videos of it or something first, just to have a better idea of what it's like. It's possible we just went on a bad night, but still. I feel like we wasted time on it.

It's not exactly my kind of thing, but like others mentioned, I saw kids about your son's age dancing in the lights and stuff. I'm not sure I'd take a small child farther than the Muppetvision area unless you think he'd really love seeing Flynn's Arcade.

It is loud; I wore earplugs (but I also wear earplugs to concerts). The kids really didn't seem to mind, though.

Maybe a silly question, but are the classic arcade games free? Or will they take quarters just like the ol' days?

My just turned 6 year old LOVES it. We let him go dance with the big kids while we stand on the side. He loves the arcade, the lights, the lasers, all of it! Quite often, there are frisbee discs they get to toss into a basket and there's usually a little line of kids for it.

Neither, but you can buy tokens (when you go in, the machines are to your left, against the wall). When we went (pretty shortly after ElecTRONica opened) the arcade was insanely busy (not sure if it's died down now). I just bought $1 worth of tokens to keep. :)

Original poster here.... I just got back from Disneyland and my 5-year-old LOVED ElecTRONica. He got a hat and sweatshirt from one of the store there.

I am 31 and I loved it too. I thought it was awesome. My wife also liked it (but my 3-year-old daughter did not).

Overall I am so glad we went.
