Would a GAC be helpful?

My father just completed chemo yesterday :cool1: for colon cancer. We are leaving for WDW in 15 days. He doing well, but I'm worried about him waiting/stand in long lines expecially if they are in the sun. As a side effect of the chemo, he can't touch or consume anyting overly cold. ie ice water to keep cool, and he obviously tires easily.

I'm not even sure if he would be willing to get a GAC card as he is a very proud man and feels like he shouldn't get special treatment. He handled all of his chemo and still mowed the lawn and kept up his volunteer job working with the needy etc.

I guess what I'm trying to ask here is, does a person suffering from chemo side effects qualify for a GAC card if he needs to rest in the shade while the rest of the family waits in a long, sunny, hot line?

Thank you

Disney's answer for stamina issues is a wheelchair or ECV. I would recommend for his independence to rent a ECV from and off site vendor.

If you look at the DisAbilities FAQ's sticky at the top of the forum, there is a lot of info in there about GAC's and ECV rental companies that are most recommended.

I think there's been a recent thread about sun issues.

Since he'd really do best if he used an ECV, I would recommend getting a sunshade for it. There is absolutely nothing Disney can do to keep him out of the sun between attractions. There is a GAC to avoid sun but I just can't figure out how it logistically can work. Hopefully there's more info in that other thread.

I would definitely suggest getting a wheelchair or ECV for him. I get that he is a proud man, but it is no fun to end up sitting separate from everyone the whole time!

There really is no GAC that would allow him to meet your party in line - you cannot see the front of most queues from anywhere else. However, most lines are mainstreamed, which means if you have a wheelchair or ECV, he would wait in the regular line with everyone else. This may help convince him to use it.

I would also look into a Cooling Vest - it really helps a lot of people with MS. Since he cannot drink cold things, perhaps this will help keep him from overheating.

You can definitely ask about a GAC, but know that HE will have to be there when you ask for it - the CM has to see him. You can do the talking, but he has to be present.

Here's to a speedy recovery for your father!
