I also like avoiding lines and choosing my own car (I allways get put with the old stinky ones ) so I would say the $20 is worth it. Im debating this for a 1 day rental, it is $15 cheaper to rent with Alamo and wait in line then to do a National Reserve and be done with it. Im pushed for time, so I will most likely stay with the National reservation...
I went with Alamo a few weeks ago and by checking in online you can go straight through to the garage ,pick your vehicle and drive out.
The interesting thing is,when I got there, there was no Minivans left. So, we just went over to the National lanes and took a National minivan (you can do this because of their affiliation).
My rental was a brand new Uplander with a DVD and it was 1/2 the cost through Alamo (compared to National)
Alamo & National use the same pool of cars so you would save the $20 and still pick whatever vehicle you reserved from the same cars as if you paid National $20 more. The lanes have not been separated in my experience.
