worst flight home on southwest , have you experience this......

Well if the FAA would back up the flight attendants they might be more likely to push on the exit row issue.

The FAA has shown an ALARMING lack of concern on some issues. For example, if you smoke in the restroom they normally will NOT press charges. I have had Flight Attendants who have just gone ballastic over this. The FAA won't back them up in a fight over the exit row seats either.....

SW does normally ask for proof of age. I have seen them deny boarding to "lap children" since there was no proof of age. They do allow children age 5 and up to be unaccompanied. So maybe the parents lied or maybe the child was 5 (not much difference between 5 and 4)

I am not sure why you think the Webmaster should close the therad. It seems pretty calm right now. (If you want conflict go to the resorts board and read ANYTHING on pool hopping LOL!)

LOL, oh, yep, pool hopping and smoking on the DVC board.
Major heated events.
My guess for asking for the thread to be closed: no one agreed with her.

As an educator, I know in order for someone to remember something, it has to be RELEVANT. Adding humor to the safety talk makes it more likely that people will actually PAY ATTENTION to it and remember it, therefore the FAs did their job. The OP pretty much summed up the safety talk, so she understood and comprehended.

I guess I am confused as to what the OP thought FAs were supposed to be doing...continuously walking the aisle? Their main purpose is for safety anyway.

I agree with the majority here that SWA has a good thing going and I, for one, enjoy flying them and will continue. I have 4 R/T flights scheduled on them in the next 8 weeks, so they are doing something right!

We have flown SWA a number of times over the years and only once have we had a "lighthearted" flight crew. I only wish I had them everytime, they are a riot!! I just think it adds to the flight and each time I step on board the plane I hope that the crew is funny! :p

I really wish I lived near Chicago Midway or LAX because the FA's on the show Airline are HYSTERICAL!!! Omg, I would love to have some of them on my flight!!:p:p

I always used humor in my safety speil when I was a bus driver.

In an event when people are busy having private conversations, if they hear everyone laughing, they're going to want to know what they're laughing at. So, they start paying attention, and soon laughing themselves. Not only that, but they RETAIN the information!

I have to admit though... I stole some of my bus jokes from a Southwest flight attendant that I once had... LOL

As a teacher we had a presentation years ago about discipline with humor. humor? Not when I was growing up! However, I use more humor now in the classroom & the students listen better.

I have been on SWA flights & enjoy their humor.

Just to clear up , i didnt have an issue with the 2 FA in the back of the plane, and i didnt have an issue with the FA not walking up and down the ailse.

my issue was with the 1 FA in the cockpit more then the duration of the flight.

the issue with humor on safety, by the way like i explained i fly a handful times a year and i can recite the safety rules backwards and forwards, ya for me, not ya for the people that dont fly as much as i do.
to me, there is a differnce when using humor in a lesson and safety rules, but again that is my opinion.

and the issue about the children flying by themselves, yes your right if the little boy didnt pick me to help him im sure it would have been someone else and thank goodness, it would have been nice if the FA could have kept and eye on them and that would have shown that the fA did care about their passangers even the little ones that fly by themselves, but again this may be the conflict between FAs and southwest not charging extra for small children flying by themselves.
But that issue about the children was just passing info to parents that send their children on flights by themselves, this could happen to your children.

and NO i was not a busy body during the flight, i actually had plenty of work that was done during my flight.

thank goodness there are people like me on your flights looking out for your safety while you are enjoying your "lighter"flight.

I did learn one lesson though about the transportaion board , it seems half of you are supporters of southwest and that is great for you.

i say half because i have been getting emails and pms that support my issues that do not want to get involved in this debate, yes that is right they all used the word debate.

instead of coming to this board about concerns with southwest, i should have just wrote my letter and now that is what im going to do....

thank you for all your imput
and have a nice weekend

thank goodness there are people like me on your flights looking out for your safety while you are enjoying your "lighter"flight.

Thanks, but, I am more than capable to take care of myself and my own safety.

my issue was with the 1 FA in the cockpit more then the duration of the flight.

First it was the last part of the flight, now it is "more than the duration". Keeps on getting longer and longer.

I am glad people have emailed you, but, I take NO creedence in heresay, if they don't have the gumption to post, then opinions cannot be shared and we cannot learn.

I would suggest you fly on an airline that is a bit more stiff. I also know the safety lecture backwards and forwards and in two languages, yippee.

We have yet to learn how you knew the little guy was only 4.
I have spoken to SWA and Birthcerts. have to be presented before the kid is allowed to board. If the kid told you he was only 4, it maybe because he just turned 5 and forgot.

This is not a debate, not even close, it is an exchange of opinions and absolute amazement that you got so bugged about something so trivial.

Well if the FAA would back up the flight attendants they might be more likely to push on the exit row issue.

my brother works for another airline and told me the exact same thing when I shared what happened with the family sitting in the exit row. I have to give credit to the FA that handled it, she was really on her toes. she felt the family out, had at least one conversation with them about something silly, engaging all of the people in the group in conversation....it could have just been idle chit-chat, but I suspect she was checking on their English. In the end, she asked them if they were comfortable in the situation, theu said they were....there wasn't a whole lot else she could do.

I enjoy SWA. our FAs this weekend were wonderful, the right mix of playful and serious. funny thing is, our pilot was just as witty (if not wittier) than the flight crew :)

When my family flies SW in four weeks, I hope I get a good group of funny FAs. It may help relieve the anxiety that my DS (11) is feeling about flying the first time. As for me, I take what comes.

I have pretty much stayed away from Southwest because of their policies, so granted I have no actual experience on them to offer my opinion. I only have to go on what I have heard.

It is great that SWA works for so many people I am sure that is why they are as successful as they are. Maybe it is because I grew up with an airline pilot as a dad, and he was pretty old school when it came to flying. Safety isn't a joking matter on an aircraft in my opinion. Joking about going out on the wing to smoke may be funny but there are a lot of, well shall we say, less than brilliant, flyers out there. Maybe the person trying to open the door just wanted to smoke? I will say that due to the pressurization, it is impossible to open a door on a 737 in flight, as the doors are basically big plugs to so speak and the pressurization keeps them sealed.

I have watched Airline and frankly was a little shocked at how the airline conducted itself. It was just another reason to convince me that Southwest really isn't an airline I would fly if I had a choice. Being sang to and asked to play games during flight is unique, but definitely not for me. I am sure it appeals to many people and works for them. Growing up flying a lot, I guess I am just used to the reserved seats and a little more business like (read starched) atmosphere on the plane. To each his own.

I would like to comment that the F/As first job is safety as others mentioned. However the F/A, in my own opinion, does not belong in the cockpit for any longer than it takes to do whatever they went in there to do. Their second job is serving the clients, and if they aren't doing that, well to me then they aren't handling all aspects of their job. Allowing an unattended child to remain unbuckled during a pre-landing check is rather scary, passengers shouldn't have to attend to unattended children, unfortunately that is just another duty of the cabin crew.

As I said I have never flown on SWA so I am only speaking of what I feel as I have had no actual experience on them. I will say as long as I have a choice, I will pick another carrier other than SWA. I prefer the reserved seats, and crews on the other carriers. That is just my opinion. I am glad SWA works for so many others. It is great to have a choice.

Gee...I haven't gotten to read all of the responses here but anyway....I'm just not clear on the OP as to what exactly the problem was?

I know for a fact that SW does asks for ID on children as I have flown them many times and have witnessed the employees at the check in desk require it. I would find it hard to believe that a 4 yr old would fly alone? That makes no sense.

Being as my profession is working in an Emergency room full time for the last 14 years...I can totally understand the sense of humor thing. As an ER worker, if I didn't have my sense of humor ya may as well just shoot me (and the rest of the group).
A sense of humor is a GOOD thing and most people appreciate it especially in a stressful setting no matter what it is. I have flown SW many times and have always enjoyed their humor. I've heard the pilot 'sing' many many times....LOL I think its hysterical. But as the old saying goes, different strokes for different folks. If you really were put out by SW...I would definitely write a letter.

My entire family enjoys the show "Airline" every week. I have never seen anyone on that show do anything disprespectful of a passenger. Some of those morons have NO business even flying. If ya just follow the rules...you won't end up with mud on your face....! Unfortunately, a lot of people just DON'T want to follow the rules. ie: showing up late...no ID for the kids...drunker than six monkees...mouthing off to the FA at the desk...not wearing underwear under their "kilts" (com'on folks..it WAS a skirt!)....needing oxygen while in the air (read your rules people!)....not having a boarding pass (moron...)... I personally think my job in the ER is much easier than what these people deal with. LOL.....What I find even more bizarre is that every other airline turned down the opportunity to do this show! Kinda makes you wonder now doesn't it.....hmmmmm

don't worry...be happy
Esmerelda :teeth:
PS...laughing is one of the healthiest things a body can do..true fact!
