Worse: Andrew or Katrina?

I realize soooo much isn't even known yet (nor will it be for quite some time) about the conditions from hurricane Katrina, but am I nuts to think it may be far worse in its destruction than Andrew? My neighbor says I'm nuts! If so, I'll accept that from the DISER'S.

Far worse destruction than Andrew due to the fact Andrew was a fairly dry storm and Katrina was a very wet storm. There was very little flooding in Andrew. Also Katrina was a much wider storm than Andrew.

Your neighbors need to watch the news and see that there are towns with nothing left--and towns that look like a Tsunami hit it.

Andrew---the devestation--though the damage widespread further--was limited to the Miami/Homestead area.

I think it will prove to be Katrina also, water damage vs wind damage, large area vs smaller area. Both horrendous.

Already a higher death toll from Katrina, and it's not over yet...flooding up in the mid-West being reported. This will likely be the worst on record.

According to the NAtional Hurricane Center, Hurricane Camille was the second most powerful/disastrous/costly hurricane of all time (number one was an unnamed storm from several decades earlier). Katrina was worse than Camille though only a cat 4 when it made landfall and Camille was a cat 5. Andrew was lesss devastating than Camille. So there you go aye?

Yes...everything you've said! How can anyone even doubt for a moment that Katrina is much worse than Andrew for *so many* reasons? Definitely showing these replies to neighbor!

Storm surge causes much more damage, especially when it's so widespread. Andrew was a smaller storm, moving very fast. It affected a smaller swath of land, although what it did effect, was obviously devastating. But it didn't have much storm surge, to speak of.

Katrina's swath, just along the coast, is about 250 miles wide. And you've got wind AND storm surge damage.

The Gulf coastal communities are all at much greater risk from storm surge than the Florida cities on the Atlantic. The Gulf is like a big shallow bowl. That causes the water to pile up much, much higher when it reaches the beach.

On the news, they are comparing Camille and Katrina, and I think due to the massive storm surge Katrina is winning out (despite the category 4 status). Camille's storm surge was 24 feet but Katrina's may have been up to 30 feet. If so, that will make it the worst storm surge to ever hit North America in recorded history. Camille's death toll was 256 and Katrina's remains to be seen, but it will surely rise.

Actually it was limited to the South Dade area from Kendall south not just the Homestead area. Country Walk was flattened and it is just north of me, Metrozoo was devastated, my neighborhood looked like a bomb blast hit, Cutler Ridge was destroyed as was Saga Bay. My husband as an insurance agent had to take the adjusters to various areas because there were so street signs for them to find anything and saw the areas hit first hand.

Actually I was on the first plane into S. Florida after Andrew... Based on what I saw there and what I am seeing on TV my vote is on Katrina... (and I really thought I would never see anything worse then Andrew!)

katrina--LA, MS, and AL residents effected. Surge does so much more damage than wind. I can't even think about what it does in the next couple of days. The disease that will be in NO and MS from standing water could lead to a major health disaster.
