I have three DDs, DD5, DD3 and my youngest is only 10 months old.

We have our first trip planned for November at the POFQ (am supposed to call today to put down deposit)

I am worried sick about my kids catching swine flu while at Disney. With all the crowds, bus rides and airplane ride I feel like we'd be at such high risk of catching it.

Where we live in Canada we don't have widespread of swine flu yet. But I hear that Florida is one of the states with widespread of the swine flu.

I am worried about my DDs' health and the effects of the flu, but also worried about it ruining our trip if they catch it while we're there.

Vaccines won't be available in Canada until later in November.

I am so stressed about this! If we stay home at least I can try to stay away from crowded places (yes, I would take them out of school if it gets really bad).

Am I being crazy to think that we should cancel this trip and plan one for later in the season (ie. in the spring) when we have a better understanding of how this swine flu is going to play out?

My DH thinks we should still go, but do any of you moms out there agree with me, or am I just overly paranoid??

that's a tough call. Right now I think it depends more on your sanity and stress level...if you're already that worried about it, I'd worry that your worry would ruin your trip if you did go! :). If it's not a big issue, I would reschedule for the spring...just to put your mind at ease and have a more enjoyable trip!:thumbsup2

Don't cancel. It's just the flu. People go during flu season all the time. Yes they might get sick, but again it is just like any other flu. The media has hyped this out of control and gotten people all freaked out over nothing. WE have had H1N1 before in North America in the 1970's

I wouldn;t be too worried if you normally have healthy children. If they are immuno comprimised, or under 6 mos, I might worry. But otherwise, it would probably only affect them like every other flu they would catch this winter.

I would try to keep the littlest in the stroller and not touching everything, cause fingers still go straight into the mouth at that age if I remember correctly.

I am leaving for Disney next week. I have a 3 yr old daughter. Got her regular flu shot last week. H1N1 shot wont be available til mid-October when I am located. My daughter doctor said to keep washing her hands, use wipes when warm water and soap not available and Purell Hand Sanitizer. Try not to let her touch eyes and face. Luckily my daughter doesnt suck her thumb or anything. I am not too worried. Even before H1N1 I always sanitize the seats on the plane, public restrooms, remote control and doorknobs in hotels...anything I touch I sanitize with Lysol Spray and Clorox wipes.
You cannot live in a bubble...just go to Disney but take precautions!
Have a great trip!!

Personally I think you need to calm down .It is still the flu.You have the possibility of getting sick anytime you travel, and even if you don't travel.Take precautions and go have a good time

I agree. What makes this so much different than the reg. flu is an entire generation of young people Have not been exposed to this like the reg. flu. all the kids born after the late 70's outbreak their immune system has never seen this flu so they catch it easier, that is why it is so widespread on colleges and schools. It is still a flu. People die every year from the flu. If you have kids in school get the shot when it comes out, otherwise just take precautions as you would for any other flu.

By November, Florida will be past the peak of the illness and it will probably be widespread in Canada. Maybe you could come to Florida to escape!

I am VERY worried about the flu (I have asthma), so I understand your concern, but I am not going to cancel trips or other activities. Take the precautions you can, and then keep living. As far as your downpayment is concerned, you can still get all your money back except a small amount ($50 maybe?) as long as you cancel a week or so ahead. Just ask them about this when you call.

We had a big outbreak in our town when school started a month ago. Luckly my DD4 who goes to a special needs preschool at the elementary school did not get it, even with most of the children in that class being very touchy and my DD sucks her finger. Most of the children who got it were sick 3-4 days but it did not appear to be as bad as the news is saying.

As others said, it is just like any other flu except younger generations have not yet built up an immunity. I know a lot of people that had it and got over it perfectly fine. Honestly, you probably have more of a chance catching it from the filthy shopping carts at the grocery stores. When have you ever seen those things washed? Uck!!! Sorry...I digress. Go and have a great time!

Welcome to the DIS!!!

Sorry, I'm with your husband on this. I think you're being paranoid. H1N1 will be widespread in Canada sooner or later so you're not going to be able to escape it. Go to WDW and have fun!'

Okay everyone, after reading all of your replies I am leaning more toward going after all. Can't live in a buble, right? I just wish I could stop thinking about it, but I will make sure to take lots of hand sanitizer etc.

Anyone know if we can take lysol wipes on the plane? What about hand sanitizer, or is that still prohibited?

No I wouldn't cancel at all. More people die from the reg flu then the swin flu. My kids just got their flu shots and their pedi is not going to offer the swine flu shot. She said there is not enough testing for her to consider it safe. I would not live in fear over this.

Unless you are house bound you could catch it. Its everywhere, just wash your hands alot take hand sanitizer, and enjoy your trip.

Yes I agree no way will I or my kids get the vaccine.
But thats another thread.:)

I usually pack the hand sanitizer so I do not have to declare it through security.

For the plane ride, I use baby wipes or those little packets of handiwipes and lysol wipes that I have found travel size for as well.

You can pack a travel size hand sanitizer in your carry on as long as it is 3oz or less and in a separate ziploc bag for liquids.

My husband had it in a country on the other side of the world. He told me that its not as horrible as the news makes it out. He was just really sick to his stomach and down for a few days. Much like he was when he had the regular flu.

I am a biochemist and from the studies I have seen the hand sanitizer seems to be doing a little towards killing this virus, but is only about 30%. 90% of transmission for this one is airborne anyway so there is really little chance of getting it from surface contact. Your best bet is to stay at least 6 feet away from people who are noticably ill or sneezing/coughing. Everyone is saying wash your hands and sanatize b/c that is really the only thing they can suggest that people do. It is not really p.c. the say stay away from sick people!
