Worried about Ivan now too!

At this point I would be more concerned about going to WDW and not being able to gas up your car than to run into the hurricane. The traffic on the turnpike has been a nightmare and the gas lines are just as bad.

I know they're trying to get the stations gas but if Ivan continues to be any type of a threat there are going to be gas lines/shortages all week. I'd be more concerned about that right now.

I don't think Ivan will fizzle out but I do think it's looking more hopeful for a FL miss, unfortunately he still looks like he's heading for some land mass. I certainly think a west coast hit is very uncertain, there's no way to predict that right now.

So many forget we've had PLENTY of hurricanes in the past 12-14 years form in the Atlantic. We have been SO LUCKY because it seemed like anytime they posed a threat they were diverted away by a cold front coming off the U.S. Looks like our luck ran out this season. We have to be thankful for so many of those other storms missing the U.S. all together and just hope that the next oneS gets diverted.

I am heading down to Disney in 12 days for my honeymoon, and although it looks like Disney is doing good, I still feel bad that I am worrying about my vacation getting ruined when so many people have lost so much. I do want to say a prayer for all the Florida residents who have been affected by these hurricaces this past month. Hopefully Ivan will stay away. I would glady give up my trip if it meant no more homes and lives would be destroyed.

 never been through a hurricane but Charley evidently did some damage since the power was out for what a week or so outside of WDW?( thought I heard some places even longer) don't know that you can go by wdw with it's mega bucks and resources...imo it's foolish to just figure the news weather is exaggerating and something to be thankful for that it ( Francis) didn't come in full force like they expected as they are saying the damage in $$ is lots already on the coast. i might be going there on vacation but how about the poor people who are still living in hotels after Charley?? I have seen a small f2 tornado ( which remember do come along with hurricanes also)...that was enough to convince me to listen to any warnings

While I for one hope and pray that Ivan does not hit Florida, here are some ponts to think about:

1. Ivan is already int he history books for being the first storm to form so far south

2. Ivan is the quickest hurricane to form and reach Cat 4

3. According to Noaa, Ivan while downgraded to a Cat 3 shows all signs of gaining strength again and could if condidtions are ripe become a strong 4 or 5.

4. Little land between its current location and Florida means little weakening.

5. Its big like Frances so even without a direct hit, it will most likely impact Florida unless 'Scottie beams it up"

6. Not only should people be worried about Florida but the islands. As many know, these islands have limited financial resources and the living conditions are poor. (I'm not offending people, but I have visited many islands)

7. Yes hurricanes are unpredictable, as in Charlie making a turn to the right early and not heading for Tampa.

8. One of the biggest factors is the temp of the water since Frances went thru and also a pressure system in the Gulf of Mex. If it stays put, well Florida - look out.

Lastly last Sept 29th, here in NS Canada, we were hit with Juan. I was watching NOAA for days and told people to prepare. A friend who works for EMO (like FEMA) thought I was nuts in predicting a direct hit when it was 2 days out. And sure enough the night it hit, she called and wanted to know where I was getting info, as the weather and hurricane people had not predicted a direct hit. I said it would be a CAT 2 and they were predicting tropical winds. Well, afterwards, and for some people 3 weeks without power, they said it was a CAT 1. Three weeks ago, the weather people said well a CAT 2 and we had tornados.

My thoughts - follow on NOAA and read the discussion stuff - its a bit techie but after one or two you'll get the hang of it and be in the know.

Thanks for all the happy info elige!!
 Just what I needed more things to worry and think about.

No kidding, as if we haven't had enough depressing news.

Hurricanes don't watch the news or follow the predictions. All we can do is watch the forecasters as it gets closer but it is still up to Mother Nature.

If it gets closer then we all have to prepare for yet another hurricane.

Lets also please keep this in mind. I would make a pretty safe bet that no one that posts information such as Elgi or whatever just did are experts. For that matter, anyone on here unless they are repeating information ver batum from a site such as NOAA has no credentials whatsoever to speak about their opinons on what the Hurricane is going to do. Allbeit, there are those who live in Florida and NC such as I that can speak about our experiences. There is a hudge difference between experience and EXPERT OPINIONS> I promise, although everyone means well on here, nobody is an expert. The Hurricane Center at NOAA website is the best information. Keep a positive attitude, enjoy your vacation, it will all work out. If you spend so much time worrying about it and listening to these armchair meterologists on the discussion boards, you will loose your mind.

I totally agree with you whitley949 & I live in FL. Reading some of these posts has me hysterical since we're set to go this Sat ! But I am being cautiously optimistic that it won't hit Orlando or South FL. 2 hurricanes is enough !! I check this weather website a few times a day & I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Ivan will miss us (there's no guarantee but we can always pray). Here's the latest update as of 5 pm today :

3 day forecast http://www.weatherunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200409.html

5 day forecast http://www.weatherunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200409_5day.html

So I'm not saying I'm not worried because I am but I'm not freaking out too much. Just pray to please Ivan GO AWAY !

Ok Guys!

We have made a decision......drum roll....

We ARE NOT cancelling this weekends trip! YIPEE!

With so many things to change: flights, hotel, babysitter, dinner reservations..etc, we have decided to come to Florida this weekend!

It looks like Ivan *the terrible* may be staying to the south of Cuba (fingers crossed).

We will ofcourse be watching the weather channel, but we feel more comfortable now that it seems to be staying further away from Florida. I realize that things can change, but we are very hopeful.

Now I need to start packing!

We were supposed to start our WDW vacation on Monday, 9/13. When I saw the hurricane predictions this morning, my DH and I decided to go this Saturday, 9/11 and just add 2 days to our trip. Southwest was more than accomodating, as was Disney. The rental car only cost $20 for the extra time.

We decided we'd rather be there beforehand and hunker down (if need be) than deal with airport openings, etc. after the storm.

And if the hurricane misses WDW, then we have 2 extra days of vacation!

Of course our families and friends think we're a little bit out of it to fly to Florida on 9/11 to beat a hurricane. :earseek:

just now they said if it would hit fl it wouldn't be till early next week so the weekend ought to be fine no matter what

I am in south (east) Florida and watched the 5am advisory. The track may pull to the north as early as Sunday-ugh! We are leaving tomorrow. I am not too happy. We may have to come home early and this could turn into a fight for my family-DH not wanting to come home and my DM wanting to-:(

I saw the update this morning too.

We will be outta there on Sunday afternoon. Hope it stays away for all of those with trips!

Florida needs the tourist $$!

I can't believe that another one would head to Florida??? Let's hope and pray (escpecially for all Floridians, my parents included) that it fizzles out to just rain and goes nowhere.

We are not cancelling either way. Florida needs my Yankee $$ and how do I tell my 4 year old we can't go to Disney because of Ivan?? She won't understand that one!

We're not postponing either. We are due to leave LI on Friday afternoon and arrive sometime on Sunday for a 2 week Disney vacation.

I cant believe this!!! I just checked the latest on Ivan look!!

Only Ivan knows where he is going.

For anyone that was at Disney during and after Frances did you have a difficult time finding gas? We are suppose to leave Monday (watching Ivan) but it worries me about the gas situation. Here in Broward County (Ft Lauderdale) we have gas again (though grocery store shelves are still bare) but I have heard that West Palm is still struggling with the shortage. We had planned to rent a car (friend of mine is painting my car at no charge). But since my car gets great gas mileage I would prefer taking it if finding gas is difficult.

thanks for any info,

Shirley
