World of Warcraft

For all my fellow WoW players..a word of warning...

With the Cataclysm Closed Beta starting yesterday(YAY:cool1: ) there is INCREASED spam emails going out. IF you have signed up for beta testing, and you receive an email telling you you got in, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT just click the email links. Please go to your battlenet account, and look under the Manage Games section to see if you are approved there as well. You need to have it listed in Battlenet to be valid...

Happy Hunting, and hoping those that wanted a beta invite get one! ( I know I am waiting!!)

Always a good reminder! (And *pout* no beta invite...)

My personal opinion? Someone might be hacking Blizz itself too , because I know a LOT of ppl who have had bought authenticators to just have their accounts hacked afterwords.. But of course Blizz would NEVER admit this..:rolleyes1

I play WoW , but I have a love/hate relationship with Blizz itself. You think with the oodles of dough they get from us millions of members they would give away authenticators for free since it's not OUR fault hackers are having an easy time breaking in to accounts.. but I digress lol

I agree. Somewhere along the line, I think the information stored on Blizz's end is being compromised. The most recent couple of hacked accounts in my guild and the one we partner with for 25 mans were people who had authenticators. As far as I can see, the main advantage of the authenticator now is having it already on your account prevents the hacker from adding their own and making the account restoration process take longer. It doesn't seem to prevent anything at all. But hey, it comes with a neat pet, right?

I do love my Corehound pup! Vanity pets are a weakness for me. Takes everything I have to not drop 1200g on a cool one in the AH..LOL

My account was ALMOST hacked once. They did get into my account but didn't do anything before I was able to get Blizz on it. I can tell you that I KNOW in my case it was not a keylogger because I never click on links and crud, go onto any wow related websites other then the official one and several reputable ones, and it was before I had addons. So that further added to my theory.

So my cousin introduced me to the funniest thing I've ever seen...check out this on youtube. A kid has his WoW account cancelled by his mom for some reason (I assume a punishment) and has a total apocolyptic style meltdown...HILARIOUS.

I can't believe parents allow their teenagers and children to play this game. *shakes her head in disapproval*

And whoa, that's an Epic tantrum. I'm glad I don't play with this guy...can you imagine what would happen if the slightest thing went wrong during a instance run or a raid? *shudders*

There is another video, same kid, having a total meltdown because someone keeps "betraying" him during a raid (I have no idea what that means, but I gather it's being killed or wounded by friendly fire? AND it's actually his brother doing it to get a rise out of him). It's hilarious. Just check the wafflepwn channel on youtube.

Good stuff.

:confused3

For every 1 negative person or situation in these games, there are so many positive ones.

I would allow my child to play WoW, EQ, or Guild Wars if they so wished to. I would make sure I had access to the account and would make sure my child joined a guild that would be a good fit for them.

There is nothing bad about letting a teen or child play.

They fixed the problem with the people using authenticators still getting hacked. People with compromised computers were entering the authenticator code, and the hackers were on the ball, logging themselves in within the 15 seconds or so it took before the authenticator code recycled. Now, the authenticator code is only good for one logon so that attack does not work.

As far as the whole kids on WoW thing: WoW can be very addicting. as long as the kid is not substituting WoW for other things they like doing, (such as reading, sports, etc.) then it's perfectly fine. My DS8 plays a second account on weekend nights instead of TV time, and I've talked to him about the problems these games can sometimes present.

I know I must keep a close eye out for issues, but so far WoW is just another thing for him to do.

yeah, I agree. Although , Im personally glad I'm in a mature guild. lol But, I have met a LOT of decent playing, amiable teens who play as much as the stereotypical "12 year old hunter" types. ...heh

Now there are some bad ones out there but every teenager that I've come across while playing has been very mature and friendly. As far as limits go, as long as YOU the parent are on top of monitoring their access, I see no problem with allowing children to play. I know of a grandmother and a granddaughter that grind quests together as well as a multitude of teenagers both boys and girls. A few even in one of my guilds. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them and the way they handle themselves in-game. That being said, there is still a reason why I turn off trade and general chat in major cities...

Spacepest, do you play? What is your reasoning why you think children/teens shouldn't play?

(This is coming from a 35 year old woman with a teen daughter who also plays..)

I agree. Like anything else, it can get out of hand but I don't think that's a reason to prohibit it entirely, just monitor it and make sure the kids know basic internet safety rules.

Same here. I'm in a more mature guild, not because younger players are inferior but because other adults, most of whom have kids and jobs themselves, are more understanding when you're late for raid because your kid's baseball game went into extra innings or because you got caught up on a job site and didn't get home on time. I've been in guilds that were mostly younger players, back in vanilla, and for the most part the raid team was high school and college kids who would get annoyed at adult players who had to put real life ahead of progression at times.

Then I guess we are terrible parents since DD, now 10 has been playing since she was 6! We control her time and actually, now that it is summer, she hasn't played in ages. She knows if someone is "mean" to her to tell us and we put them on ignore but in general she plays with one of us and we quest or she runs battlegrounds. My favorite thing to watch is when she runs her lowby warrior and pwns other players in duels! :rotfl: You just wonder what they would think about being beaten by a kid...

It is a family activity that we enjoy and our family motto is "The Family that Slays together, stays together"... :lmao:

HAHA...awesome..I had a guildie who played with 2 of his triplets..they were fun to talk to...they thought they were cool talking to adults..LOL

I've gotten so much useful info from this thread, thanks to all of you for posting. That You tube of that kid having a meltdown was messed up. I get upset when my kid makes fists in frustration, if he ever had a fit I'd throw the whole thing out in the trash.. it's supposed to be fun, it if stops being fun it needs to go. Seems simple to me.

The post about less anonymity was interesting, it seems to be part of a troubling trend towards wrestling free speech away from us all. What is illegal is illegal and there are already laws set up against obscenity and defamation of character, all a victim need to do is push to be heard so all the excuses are garbage. I think there is something more sinister behind this sort of thing, our laws protect our identities and that's not to the advantage of some. I'm me all day long but sometimes I like to be just Luvorlando, why do I need to be accountable to everyone for everything all the time? For example, my neighbor or my cousin in NYC does not need to know via Google that I'm an even bigger Disney fan than they know, nor do they need to know my DH plays WOW. The UN is always pointing a finger at China for suppression of free speech, that's a laugh these days :rotfl2: Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

FYI, Blizzard did finally restore every single coin to my DH & DS's accounts the other day so that definitely took the sting out. It's still crummy that we were hacked but nothing has shown up on the snitch yet so I'm not sure what or how it happened. So much for my MAC being impenetrable, it's either a flaw in MAC or a flaw in Blizzard.

Hey y'all, have you seen this yet? I haven't been in game in a few days, and it is a little weird getting WoW news in the local paper, but this strikes me as a HORRIBLE idea.

Yeah, but that won't be a big prob for me. Most of the ppl who post on the official WoW site are angry @ the world (both wow and rl lol) and most of the forums on that site aren't remotely helpful. My fave site will always be wowhead.com
