On a whim I took a spin to World of Orchids. I had recently heard about this place, although people told me it was closed. Turns out they were still open - thye have a firly small (but decent quality/price) gift shop of Orchids and such. They also have what is left of their indoor garden. Wow - that place must have been successful back when it was in full swing! Even now, in as bad a condition it is, it was nice. I was talking with one of the workers - I guess the Hurricane in 2004 really took a toll on the place. Lost most of the outside buildings, destroyed the main building to the point they couldn't keep the birds or too many orchids out there.

Did anyone go there back before the hurricane? What was it like?

I was there in 2001. It seemed a bit disappointing to me. The main greenhouse was well kept but if felt a bit old and not really full of orchids. There were many but they were in clusters in different spots. The birds and fish were all active in their cages and ponds. We did a nature walk out back that seemed in disrepair and there was nothing out there (except big old spiders) to see. My friend who is a orchid nut liked the place as the shop was really good. :)
