"World Cup 2018" World Showcase News

I would love for WS to do more for World Cup this year but I am not hopeful. In 2014 Epcot showed the games in the old Odyssey restaurant (near TT/walkway from FW to WS, if you haven't been), which is a fairly depressing venue. I would love to see big screens up in Germany and France, for instance, but don't think that will happen. Maybe they'll show it in the outdoor theater in the America pavilion since there's no summer concert series this year?

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Awesome Mix show is starting there June 9th so they won’t be showing it there.

So it fits the excitement level of the games?

:duck:

Yep, definitely. Put me in the camp of those that "don't get it". I don't know when the thing starts, but I'm pretty sure it's sometime in June. We definitely will be avoiding viewing spots if they set them up.

Thanks for the heads up! Going later this afternoon to see what is available.

Yep, either you love soccer or you don’t - We are a soccer loving family. We live in Atlanta, and soccer is very popular there :)

It is? Guess I just pay so little attention to it that I haven't noticed. :D Just yanking your chain...not about liking soccer, because I don't...but if you like a "fringe" sport here in the US (i.e. not NFL, NBA, MLB or maybe NHL) you've got to have a sense of humor. I like lacrosse and NASCAR, so I take my share of ribbing. I'm honestly bummed that I'm going to miss a road course NASCAR race while we're in WDW in a few weeks...but no way would I alter our vacation to watch it.

You're welcome.:)

I am not a huge Soccer fan,BUT most of the WORLD is and being that I will be at WDW during the Semis and Finals and being that many of the World Showcase Countries will be participating with France and Germany having excellent shots at winning and then throw in that The 15s will also be there with Brazil and Argentina also "in the mix",why shouldn't I get excited about the World Cup in that atmosphere?!:)

And I do find Messi to be "captivating".:)

True funny story-I was talking to a United Kingdom CM a few years ago and mentioned that the Premier League games were being shown more and more in the USA on live TV and I commented that I didn't know much about Soccer and had been watching the games and trying to learn more about Soccer.

I expected her to say what an interesting sport it was once you learn about it,but her IMMEDIATE response was:

"It's boring,isn't it?!"lol:)

Huge futbol fan here. I loved the viewing parties at the Odyssey building. I hope they bring it back as well.
Let's not make this thread about loving or hating (not getting) the sport

They also had Viewing available at the WoL building and at Restaurantosaurus.:)

Restaurantosaurus surprisingly was a cool atmosphere.:)

Congratulations! You win today's award for Writing the Sentence that has Never Been Written Before!

(I don't say this as a knock against either activity....it's just that they are so far apart in so many respects. It's like ordering a Miller Lite to go with your beluga caviar.)

:rotfl2:

Never thought of it like that, but you're exactly right. That's funny. I've always been a racing fan, and it's even what I do as a hobby. My kids have been playing lacrosse for 4+ years now, so I was kind of forced into the sport and now am eyeball deep in it.

I am interested in seeing the excitement level for the games this year with the US team boycott since its in Russia.

:)

I am pretty sure that ESPN carried the World Cup in 2014. This year it is being shown on Fox. As a result, I think viewing parties at WDW are less likely this time around.

I will say what I said when we went in 2014. Why dont they show it at WWoS on a huge screen and be done with it? They dont show the Olympics in World Showcase.

I’m inclined to agree that 2014 had more to do with ESPN having broadcast rights than anything. I don’t recall anything in 2010 when we were there when the games opened. It’s on Fox this time.
