Working On Christmas

It does suck to work on Christmas, but this year it's sucking even worse not having a job at all :sad2:

yep, be thankful you are working, as much as it sucks to be working on a holiday - there are many out there that would knock you down for that job!

You guys are right, thank God I do have a job, as much as it stinks. I'm just upset because I know all that I do and sacrafice all year long, one would think my boss would be a little more understanding. There are 3 other people that don't have families that can cover for me bur it is what it is:sad2:

I've thankfully never had to work Christmas - and I don't ever plan on working it. My military job is computers and we always get/got the week off. When I get home from Kuwait I will "just" be a reservist and won't have to work it. Dh is military too - a recruiter right now - so he hasn't/won't. However, I can remember being younger and my mom having to sometimes work Christmas. Sucked. I HATED that. She was first a nurse and then a nurse in the military. As "just" a nurse I'd go to the hospital with her if she worked on Christmas (it was just the two of us) since she worked in OB...I just stayed in one of the rooms!! LOL I can still remember the year she deployed. She got home about 8pm Christmas Night and Ohhhhh what a present that was!!!!

Do you get overtime pay? DH has to work Christmas Day, and he worked Thanksgiving Day, and I think he's working New Year's Day, too, but since he gets over $50 an hour for working holidays (he's an RN), it's fine by me! Kids are all grown (youngest is 19) and we'll do our Christmas stuff on Christmas Eve. I hope you get extra pay for working the holiday and if so, concentrate on how you'll spend it and then just do your Christmas stuff either on Christmas Eve or after you get home on Christmas Day. And I hope you don't have to work next year! Merry Christmas!

I hate working the holidays- worked the first 11 years of them at my job- cheistmas eve & day, new years eve and day, thanksgiving, 4th of july, everything....now that I have seniority I take off and let the junior people work the major ones, I will still work Martin Luther, Lincolns birthday, Washingtons birthday, good friday, and not major hones like that since it does work out to about 600.00 for the one 8 hour shift since we are paid extra for the holiday but I like taking off Thanksgicing, Christmas and New Years.

I worked on Christmas Day one time, when I was a video store clerk.

Yes, a video store clerk!

I couldn't believe the boss wanted the store to be open on Christmas Day. And since I was the last person hired I was the one who had to work it. It was ridiculous. I think I might have had 2-3 customers the entire day. They didn't make enough money to pay me, have the heat turned up, lights on, etc.

I'm a zookeeper. We can't not take care of the animals because it's a holiday... I'll be at work on Christmas. But I do only have to work 4 hours.

My Mom was a RN before she retired. She always worked holidays while we were young. She always worked either Xmas Eve or Day. Always. My Dad was a Farmer w/ Milk Cows. So he always worked as well.

my brother is a cop and volunteers to work every holiday. he loves the double time and a half. By doing this he guarentees to get the one day a year off he really wants.......the first day of hunting season :rotfl:

Karen,
No, both my Dkids are older 17 & 20 but those are the only 2 days a year that I ask off. I have been with the same company for 2 years and have NEVER asked for a day off and NEVER called off sick:sick:

So, you have only worked there 2 years and expect both major holidays off in the same year. Typically for companies/businesses that are open on holidays people will get one holiday off but not both. As for the other 3 workers, they are all orphans with no family-how sad. I can't imagine what it would be like to not have ANY family at all.

I think you are asking a lot to be off both Thanksgiving AND Christmas.

Also, getting paid less than minimum wage---how exactly does that work with the department of labor in your state???

I know that it stinks to work holidays but I think that when you take a job with a place that is open on holidays, you just have to expect that this will happen.

Also, you shouldn't be given a preference of those days off because of your "family status." It doesn't matter. If you don't give the other people off because they don't happen to have kids or are married, that is discrimination. Your employer can't use rationale like that.

My DH works in a casino. We've been together 25 years and I think he's had maybe Christmas day off 3 times, Thanksgiving 1 time and New Years 1 time.

Ok, now you've hit a nerve. Those of us who don't "have families" as you put it are also entitled to our holidays. Just because someone does not have a spouse or children or however you define "family" doesn't mean they don't have as rich a life as you do.

NO extra pay:mad:straight pay. I don't know how to post it so if you search my boards under Need Help in PA it will explain all the crap I go through. Please read it and tell me your advice.
Here's your thread:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2326134 Did you ever make a phone call to the state as was suggested?

Yup ... taxi drivers and their dispatchers do work the holidays. Like someone else said, you had Thanksgiving off so now you need to work on Chirstmas. It's a bummer but that's the service industry!

I'm 1 of 2 managers for a transportation company, more less a glorified dispatcher.

I have worked for a couple of transportation companies and we have never had any dispatchers in the office on any of the major holidays. Now, we would have dispatchers on-call, but can't remember a time when there was an issue that dictated that they go into the office to take care of it.

Our office here is closed 24th and 25th. Dispatch for leaving on the 27th, will be done on the 23rd. All of our major accounts know that they need to set up any shipments early that week.

I work Christmas. I don't even get paid to do it. But I work from home, with DH, so it's ok. We own a farm and still need to feed the 24 horses and clean stalls just like every other day.

I have had to work Christmas more times then I can count. I can empthaize sp?? with those that have to

my dh is a cop and for the first 4 yrs we were married he worked EVERY holiday, birthday ect....it just worked out that way...out of 6 yrs this will be our 2 nd christmas together. It sucks to work christmas but if everyone was off the country would be a mess! lol

When I was flying, I often had to work Christmas. Even though the agents and many other employees got time and a half or so double time, as crew memebers we just got straight time. Plus, when we were done working for the day, we didn't even get to go home. Instead we went to a hotel room. Oh well..... when I went to work for an airline, I knew as a junior crewmember, I'd be working ALL the holidays. Eventually, I was senior enough to not have to work those days if I didn't want to.

I used to work at IHOP. Would you believe that Christmas Eve/Day were the busiest days of the year? Not Easter, Mothers Day, etc... CHRISTMAS!

It was mandatory to work. The crappiest part of the holiday? Hearing customers say "poor you for having to work Christmas" Well shoot, don't stop at IHOP on your way to Grandma's then. If it wasn't the busiest day of the year I could be home!

Nowadays, I refuse to go out 3 days of the year... Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor Day. I believe everyone should have those days off... including service people. So you know, my family has to put up with me and my cooking for, like, an entire day!
