I am a scheduling/production manager for the one service department of a fairly large firm. We have 15 offices in a multi-state region. My position services the entire firm (all 15 offices). It is a little tricky because I sit in one office but I am not really a part of that office. I need to keep my distance a bit so as to not give the appearance of favoring one office over another when scheduling work. I also do not know much about the technical aspects of their jobs.
Today I got an email from the one manager in our office. She is taking care of the holiday gifts for the staff (basically everyone who is below a manager level) this year just for this office. She is getting each staff person a $50 gift certificate (place to be determined) and wants each person in the manager group to contribute $37 to split the cost. They have done this for awhile now and it is kind of expected. My position is a new position for the firm. Last year I did contribute, but it was only $22 then (we had a lot less staff). I was also only 2 months into the job and didn't want to make waves.
I don't want to be a scrooge, but money is tight this year and I don't see why I need to contribute. I do not work with them on a day to day basis like the other managers do. But if I don't contribute, the other managers will have to split my share. What would you do?
PS: The department is also doing a $15 secret santa with voluntary participation. The firm also gives everyone a token xmas gift (last year it was a $75 VISA gift card).
