If you have been working with a company over a year part time (7 hours a day rather than 8), and they make you full time, would you expect to wait the 6 months for your paid vacation and sick time to kick in, or would you assume that since you've been there so long already, it would start right away?

If as a part time employee, vacation and sick time were NOT apart of my compensation, then yes I would expect to have that kick in as stated in the employee handbook.

If I had been getting these as a part time employee, I would expect them to keep being earned, even if they calculate and I earn them faster as I work more hours, from day 1 of the full time status.
 
It would depend on what the employee handbook said. There is no right or wrong answer to this since every company does it differently. A friend of our's just got a new job and ALL of his benefits, including his heath insurance, started on day one of his job. Most companies have some kind of waiting period for benefits to begin.
 
It will depend on your companies policy. I could see your thinking that you have put in your 6 months of time even though it was part-time hours.
 

Technically, you're a "new" employee once your employment status changes from part-time to full time. So, yes, technically, you would need to wait the normal waiting period for benefits to start just as you would if you just walked in the door for the very first time on your first full-time day.

Personally though, I would think it pretty cheap of a company to not offer me benefits on day 1 after my being there for a year as a 35 hours a week "part-time" employee. I mean, c'mon, you're fully trained and they know they want to keep you/they know your work ethic or they wouldn't have offered full time. IMO, that's what the 6-month waiting period is for - so you have a chance to learn your job and so that the company has a chance to see if you fit. Both are a "check"!
 
with where i worked you were a newbie all over again if you so much as promoted up from one f/t position to another (unless you had preapproved vacation on the books, and enough accruals already sitting there- and got the hiring manager to agree to let you use it) . if you went from p/t to f/t you started accruing your new leave benefits from day one, but you could'nt use them until your 6 month probationary period was up.
 
its depends on company policy and what was agreed upon when the job changed.
 
At my company, we treat them as new hires once they achieve full time status. The only benefit that is treated differently is the 401k because that is based on hours worked and original hire date.
 
If I understand the OP, part-time employees have no vacation benefits. Full-time employees start to earn vacation time as soon as they start, but vest after six months. As such, she would not have been earning vacation time as a part-time employee, so would not be able to use vacation time immediately upon going full-time. She would have to wait until she vested after being a full-time employee six months.
 
My current company would use the date your full time status is in effect as your full time date for accrual of vacation time and granting of sick and personal time.

I would not expect to have my part time work hours count toward hours worked for full time benefits.
