Work and Secret Santas

How do I get out of this??? I've done it every year and it's really fun - we all hang stockings and you draw names. Every week you put something little in the stocking and the last week you buy a bigger gift that's $20.00.

We are really strapped this year for cash - not in debt....but it's going to be tight to buy presents for my own family....I love my co-workers but seriously can't participate.

I'm thinking of talking to my boss privately about it.....what do you think?

Yes, I think that's a good plan...talk to your boss. No one should feel pressured to spend money that they don't have for an office gift exchange.

Dont feel bad. There may be others in your office who are struggling with the same issue.

I would definitely talk to the boss. Maybe he can act like it's his or her idea to change the rules this year.

Exactly!

The nursing units I've worked on would always do Secret Santa, but all throughout the year. I don't want to get into details, but I always politely opted out.

I fear you will be seen as a Scrooge if you opt out of it. There were a couple of years when DH and I literally did not buy so much as a pair of socks for ourselves during the year, and spent a pittance on gifts for each other. I tried to opt out of Christmas gifts at work (that added up to about $50 total--co-worker, plus contributions to gifts for THREE supervisors who made one heck of a lot more money than us little people) and was really dissed for it, like I wasn't a team player.

I think it's fine to talk to your boss about it, but be aware you may be judged.

I know! Look how Ty and the Tag Fairy are jackin' with me! I don't know any details about the Secret Project.

Edited to add: I think the Tag Fairy put that in on Saturday (or atleast that's when I first noticed it-Sat. morning).
