If you are going to clean fish in the basement, be sure to promptly take the remains of the fish out to the garbage.

After days of searching for the horrible odor in our house my DH discovered that he forgot to take out the garbage bag with the fish guts in it. :yuck:

Here's the worst part - it had been sitting downstairs by the furnace for 7 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't even begin to explain to you how disgusting this smelled!! OMG!!!!

I started to smell it on Thursday but the odor was in our entry way. I searched the entry way and couldn't find anything. Finally on Saturday night after the smell started coming in our bedroom I asked DH if it could be something in our vents. He put his head by the vent and said "yep!". He then made the gruesome discovery in the basement.

Good thing the garbage men don't dump the cans in to the truck by hand anymore!

Fish is in the air
And in the basement

Fish is in the air
And it is pugent

Fish is in the air
And in the basement toooo

And I don't know if I'm just dreaming
Don't know if I feel sane
But it's something that I must believe in
And it's there when you call out my name

(Chorus)
Fish is in the air
Fish is in the air
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

:teeth:

BLECH!!
That is DISGUSTING!!

Ewwww! He has some wise advice there!

Ewwww! I left fish too long in the refrigerator one time. No kidding, I had to get rid of the refrigerator!!!! Ewwww! It was horrible!

LOL GP! :p

Fish are gutted and cleaned in the side yard around here. Do not enter the house until clean and placed in bags for freezing or cooked immediately on the grill.

LOL GP!!

Normally he would clean fish out in the garage but it was freezing outside. It wouldn't be a big deal if he had thrown the bag out - everything else got cleaned up.

My condolences! LOL!

Bring on the air freshners - you may also want to consider baking soda - open a few boxes and/or sprinkle in the basement - it may absorb the odor. I would also change your furnace filters - that may help.....then again, 7 days, wow - that's a long time...!

Actually - the smell is all gone!

It faded very soon after he removed the yucky bag from the basement. We sprayed some deoderizer and turned on the ceiling fan!

GROSS! That happens when you have chicken and put the giblets in the garbage too.....

Ewwwwww. Poor thing. I bet the smell was interesting to say the least.

Once we had a terrible odor near our front door. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Finally DH squatted down and discovered our neighbor's cat that had passed on days before. We knew he was missing, but never dreamed that he was behind the smell. I thought the smell was so vile that it would never go away, but it was gone soon after the funeral.

About 20 years ago when I was single and living on my own, I met my brother for dinner at a fish restaurant. I had shrimp, and couldn't eat it all. I took it home in a "doggie bag" but put it in my trunk since my car was new and I didn't want to risk it smelling up my new car.

I'm sure you can guess the rest. Days later I could NOT figure out what the horrible smell in my nice new car was. When it FINALLY dawned on me I drove straight to the dumpster in my apartment complex, held my nose and tossed the leftovers. Ick.
