Wood/Laminate Floors?

I want to replace our carpet in the family room with a wood or laminate floor. Our main hallway has oak wood floors. We have a step-down into the family room so I'm a little worried about getting the same floor in the family room (no visual distinction for the step down). What does everyone else have? Did you put in the floor yourself or hire someone to do it? I would appreciate your recommendations!

TIA!

I have oak floors throughout my house. The builder had put them in the kitchen, eating area, and foyer. They were very poor quality and didn't last long. After I could no longer stand it and my other carpeted areas needed replacing, I just went and did the whole house.

We went to a flooring store and they did it. I don't think I would attempt a large area myself, but one room might be okay.

I would also not have two different types of hardwood "looks" in your home. Either try to match the oak that you already have or go with something new and rip the oak out.

We have the same situation. We have the same oak wood floor in the our entire home. The end of the step has a special bull nose end and the step seems easy to see. We had our home done when it was new and contracted out the entire work. We bought the floor and hired the company to install it.

We put laminate flooring in our house and installed it ourselves. Pretty easy project IMO. We did 600 or 800 sq ft (5 rooms). However, I agree with the other poster, I would not have two wood types or colors competing. If you want to replace the carpet, get exactly what you have in the hall or replace it all.

Do a search for "laminate" in the CB and a lot of great threads will pop up, including a few that I've started and replied to. GL!

we have the laminate that looks like ceramic tile. we love it and have had several people ask us about it. we got it at Lowes.

We would probably have trouble matching what we already have since it was installed by the builder 9 years ago. I guess I'll have to think about replacing everything (expensive!!!) or maybe a contrast like the ceramic looking laminate.

Thank you everyone for your information and ideas!
