It is so frustrating checking skyscanner every single day to see if I can get cheap flight prices. Waiting for August 15th to 31st to drop. We've never paid more than £450 per person for indirect flights so don't really want to spend much more than that. Prefer to fly from Manchester, but have flown from Heathrow and is a possibility if Manchester unavailable cheap. Will have to keep hoping and praying they'll drop before the end of June or I'll have to make a decision not to go this year.

Last time (Feb 2012) we paid £1400 for 4 of us, direct from London to Orlando. I know the prices will have gone up since then, but I'm looking now and the cheapest I can find direct is £2200 ish.

Is this a good price (2 adults, 2 children leaving mid Oct for 2 weeks)????

normally there are 5 adults going, but this year they'll be 6 adults as daughter's boyfriend/fiancé will be coming.
Can't comment on prices with children as my youngest hasn't been classed as a child for 3 years now (she's 15).

Unfortunately I think the days have gone where we can expect under £700-800pp in August. Yes there might be a glitch or an odd deal but I think standard price is now over £700 either direct or indirect.
VA have lost over £300 Million in past few years, they can't drop prices unless they change their business format. Also take into account all the mergers (Delta/Virgin, AA/US airways) they can control prices easier.

Don't suppose you can go a few days later? Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale direct £599pp but its 22nd Aug - 5th Sept

We are going early July this year, miss the main English school hols but I booked last night at £640pp direct (VA) I might be wrong but don't think we are going to see the lower fares this year.

We gave done the same, now being tied to school holidays. By flying out a few days before the end of the school year (schools break for summer earlier in Scotland) we saved well over £100 per person. I checked our dates today out of interest and those tickets are up £300 each :faint: and that's with ridiculously long layovers both ways.

Flexibility is often the key. Even if you can't be too flexible on dates, you can sometimes find better deals if you are willing to fly into and/or out of different airports or change the number of nights you are staying. I know it is partly down to getting leave approved from work, but I think so many people get into package holiday mode when they choose their length of stay and stuck on the 7/14/21 night breaks when if you're doing it DIY you can do 9 or 15 or some other number to perhaps avoid a weekend supplement by moving one or both legs of the journey away from a weekend day.

We went first day of school holidays last year and paid £420 with Delta and then another $79 each way to upgrade to economy comfort which was definitely worth it. Checked Virgin this morning for 6th to 29th August and they want £1325 each! In 2012 I paid £800 on Virgin going the day the Olympics started and that was premium economy both ways.
One thing that gives me comfort is that last year I checked Virgin prices a week before we went and they obviously hadn't sold all their seat because economy had come down to £700 for our dates. Not sure my nerves would take waiting that long though.

I have been checking the seat situation on the Delta flights (same routes as last year) and only about 3 seats in economy showing booked. When I booked last year, seats were allocated as soon as I booked and I could change for free so I am assuming, wrongly or rightly that not many seats have been sold. Therefore I do expect the price to drop from around the £900 mark on Delta.

Also, for the last 2 years my friends and family have booked US Airways in March for school holidays at £600. I am hoping that this will happen again this year. The both went on the LHR to Charlotte then MCO route and both had good experiences.

All else fails I'll just have to pay the £800 or so to go indirect, wont like it but better than not going. Luckily we are a little flexible and can go for a max of 25 days.

I'll probably just end up waiting until prices come to a level I'm prepared to pay. We booked 10 weeks before a few years ago (when swine flu prevented us from going to mexico) and got a really good price on flights.

We have really struggled with flight prices this year. We have ended up using miles plus money and will fly direct to MIA from Heathrow, we will then drive up to Orlando. We have flow into Orlando for the last 13 years but couldn't get reasonable prices this year. I can't bring myself to pay £4700 for economy with VA ( flying on the 17th of August) 2 adults 2 Children into MCO.

We got a better deal with BA rather than VA this year. August 17th-September 6th LGW - TPA including car hire 2A 4C for £4500
