Wonder review having sailed all others

Hi All, merely thought I'd share my thoughts on the Wonder after having been on all the others, the last being the Fantasy. We sailed the Magic years ago before it was refurbished and want to sail that now. But, to the Wonder.

Keep in mind, it is a MUCH smaller boat. In ways I like it a lot, especially at Castaway Cay where you can REALLY tell the difference in beach crowd! On days at sea, the pool areas were packed! Of course the adults and Goofy pool were small so......

I did like the new slide, which is fun. What they don't tell you is at the end when you hit the water it's like coming to an abrubt stop. So that was a shock the first time down. LOL

Restaurants:

Tiana's Place - by far the BEST restaurant out of all restaurants on any boat. The food was awesome as well as the entertainment. Lot's of fun. Loved it!
Animator's Palate - it's changed since we were on the Magic. Now, don't leave dinner too early and miss the "show" as some did. It was really cool and they've added in new movie characters to the walls such as Moana, Inside Out, etc.
Triton's Place - least favorite and we've decided we'll skip this one if/when we do the Wonder again. Nothing special about the restaurant and wasn't a fan of the menu.

Feb 14th - Pirate Night - Okay, now here is where those of you who have sailed on Dream and Fantasy may be dissapointed as we certainly were. They do NOT do the Jack Sparrow show. It's simply a video game involving kids on the big screen, they dance, characters come out and dance for a bit, Capt Hook came out for a moment and then Mickey sprung out for a split second and the firework show started. Didn't see the firework show coming at all as I was expecting a bigger lead up to it. While any firework show is awesome, it too isn't quite the standards of the bigger boats. Even my 9 yos noticed the Pirate Party dissapointment and said we won't go back on the Wonder. I even asked customer service if that was their normal Pirate Party thinking maybe something was off but they said no, that's what they do. So, again, we won't be attending next time but will make it up for the fireworks only.

Another thing, we did NOT receive Mickey bandana's at ALL!! I inquired and I was advised the shipment was late and that's why no one got mickey bandana's in their stateroom. I hope they've not stopped this on this particular boat. Folks who had sailed before including us, seemed dissapointed in this as well as it is a staple of Pirate Night. I asked as I wondered if this had stopped or if it was just something this ship didn't do........

Sail Away Party - this too was dissapointing. For us, we didn't even sail away. We were late as the boat was waiting on a party of 8 from Canada who was late getting on the boat and we were waiting on their luggage to show up. We didn't sail away until around 5:30 and then had to quickly get to dinner. But the sail away party was almost the same dancing stuff they did for the Pirate Party now that I think about it.

Shows:
Golden Mickey's - had seen it on another cruise; skipped it
Disney Dreams - skipped it
Juggler - saw it, it was okay. Short but sort of cool.
Frozen (4th night) - saw the matinee version and it was good. Started off slow but it was well done. Enjoyed it and the matinee was packed. I think the evening shows were less crowded maybe because it was the last night. My son who doesn't like Frozen at all even seemed to enjoy the effects!

Movies:
2 Star Wars movies - Rogue One included
Muana - saw it in 3d and it was such a great movie! Had no desire to see it either but so glad as it's one of the best movies I've seen in a while. A definate see if you haven't!
Zootopia - had seen it so skipped (do like it though)
Dr. Strange - we had not seen it and though it was way cool. My son is now a huge Dr. Strange fan
Finding Dory - skipped it

Kids Club - the Marvel area isn't that big but their video interactive game seemed pretty cool. My son said Spiderman came in once. He made a Capt. America shield. He loved the kids club and we couldn't keep him out of it.
So parts of the kids club is one small area of the outpost from Frozen (couldn't tell if they really did anything in there? Maybe crafts? There's a toy story section with a slinky slide. A storybook theatre section. The Marvel area. An area where there was a Wii and Xbox video games ( I think 4 screens) and the games where you can move the ship around the screen. That's all I really remember. I think there's a girl area but apologies, didn't pay much attention to the girl portion.

Gift shops.
There are 3. One on deck 3 outside the pub which mostly sold Star Wars items.
Decks 4 - One has the jewelry and clothing and the other has all the toys and souvenirs. They have a small selection of things but it is a smaller store. They had a lot of Beuaty and the Beast stuff for sale as well as Pirate stuff. The Beauty and the Beast doll who looks like the character is sort of creepy looking but that's just me. There were NO items on sale in any gift shops like you may find on the bigger boats. The special was a DCL cooler bag for $14.99 when you spent a certain amount.

Castaway Gift:
A beach bag - same one we received 1.5 years ago. It's a great bag so don't mind it at all. No pretzals, nothing. Just bag. FYI.

Drink Machine - located at the AFT of the boat on deck 9. Personally I hated having to go all the way there for drinks but oh well. I had a really hard time finding water fountains on the boat so you may want to take a large container for water if you want some in your room. The water fountain on 4th level deck (where folks walk and lay around) was out of order.

They were also doing a lot of repairs on the boat while we were there. So some doors on deck 4 were always closed from inside to outside so you had to walk around.

Weather - beautiful all days. Castaway Cay was awesome. They said it was the nicest day they had there in a while so perhaps we lucked out that day! The only rain we saw was our last night on the boat and the closed off all the doors to the decks as they were slamming shut when folks used them.

Adutl Only Pool - was always packed and chairs around pool were taken early.

It seemed like there was always an engine smell on the boat in certain areas; especially on the way to the top of the slide and certain areas of deck 10.

Didn't care for the lounge area right around the sports deck. There's a large basketball court, with foosball and some ping pong tables. No mini golf.

As far as the midship detective agency? My son missed it but still had a blast and was sad to leave.

There were character greeting scattered all over the place. We didn't attend any but you couldn't miss the lines around the place.

Room- 6503
Started out feeling small but it was fine. Nice and quiet locaton. Long walk if going to the room alot.

I think that pretty much sums it up. For us, we were trying to decide do we cruise this ship for Alaska or choose another cruise line. We love Disney cruises. It may come down to pricing when they open dates for 2018. We definately know which meals/shows we'll skip and I think it helps to now know what we're walking into. I'm still on the fence.

Regrets? No. We miss it already. But for those of you coming from the larger boats, have an open mind and know it's not the same experience.

Enjoy!

Thank you for your report. We have cruised the Magic, dream and fantasy and are on the wonder next jan. I wanted to add my 2 cents, I did not notice a difference as far as the crowding at the pools because all of our trips on the dream and fantasy the pools were packed full to the point you couldn't move. Don't think the size of the pool really impacts the crowding since there are less people to squeeze into it, all relative. Just my personal experiences and thoughts.
Thanks again for your info. :)

Great review ... thanks! Disappointing to hear that there is no Jack Sparrow show like on the Fantasy :( ... Do you remember what your dining rotation was on the cruise?

Thanks for your review. For me, the Pirate Party really isn't a big deal and can't say that I was particularly impressed with the jack Sparrow element of the show on the bigger ships. The sailaway party, as far as I can remember, is pretty much the same on all the ships.

For us, we still prefer the atmosphere and staff on the Wonder and the fact that it is so intimate.

Comments .... (based on my sailing in Jan 2017)

  • Tiana's Place - yep, the best MDR in the fleet!!
  • Pirates bandannas - In January we received the bandannas - so I will believe DCL that it was a supply issue (until proved otherwise)
  • Pirates night - Seen the "Jack Sparrow" show on the Dream and Fantasy and have seen the pirates party on the Magic and Wonder (probably 12+ times in total). Yea, we probably won't be going to any of these "shows" anymore - will probably try and watch the fireworks. Yes on the Magic/Wonder the "Pirates Party" is the same as the sail away dance party. However, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Chip & Dale are on stage for a significant amount of time. Stitch shows ups when the Pirates take over the party.
  • Sail Away Party - "same" on all of the ships, and just because the ship doesn't start sailing during the party doesn't make it any better or worse. We've had sail aways in the atrium due to rain. We've had sail aways at the normal time but the ship didn't leave port for another 5+ hours. again, didn't change the sail away event - we KNOW it's cruise time when we are at the sail away with a tropical drink (or smoothie or just dancing with the crowd!!)
  • Golden Mickey's - "skipped it because we've seen it" --- WHOOPS!!! It's changed. It's Different between the ships. Yes, there are many of the same vignettes (Snow White, Dalmations, the "overall story"). We were going to skip it this time as well - SO GLAD that we didn't. New big Tangled vignette and some other new scenes as well.
  • Disney Dreams, An Enchanted Classic - We NEVER miss this. Still Brings a Tear to my eyes (and I'm a crusty old fart). On our cruise we think something happened to Anne Marie as she and Peter were flying over "London" or her hometown. Theater went dark, curtain dropped. Several minutes later the show finished and we are pretty sure there was an "understudy"
  • 24 Hour Beverage Station near the Aft of the ship - where it's always been and the ship is NOT that big!
  • Room Location - we were on Deck 5 way forward as well and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like this location. But I will probably stick with my usual Deck 2 Oceanview rooms.

"The special was a DCL cooler bag for $14.99 when you spent a certain amount."

Does anybody know where I can see a photo of this cooler?

We actually bought not only one for us but got one for the teacher as we had missed teacher appreciation week. Great gift for $15 It has a drawstring mesh pouch on one side, a folded pouch on the other and zippered pouch on front with carry strap.

We were on the Wonder in January and can confirm we did get the pirate bandanas. Sound like it was a supply problem.

We also loved Tiana's place...thought the Jazz band was great and really enjoyed Tiana walking around the greeting everyone. She was wonderful. The menu was also great. Only downside is that it seemed extra loud but I can still say it was my favorite MDR. Like it so much better than Carioca's on the Magic.

I personally like the sailaway party on the classic ships better. On the Fantasy and Dream they seem more like a big commercial than anything else. I like the Adventures Away better on Magic/Wonder.

We didn't miss Jack Sparrow and I am getting tired of the pirate show on all the ships...still like the fireworks but feel they need to improve the pirate shows.

I love all the ships but enjoyed coming back to the Magic and Wonder after the new ships.

Nice review OP, thanks!!!

We were on the same cruise which was a B2B with the previous cruise. We did get bandanas on the 3 night and were surprised by not receiving them on 4 night. The show in Animators was good but is not the show you get with 7 night and longer, those cruises also get the drawing animation show. Tiana's was a bit loud for me but DW and DDs thought it was great, wore ear plugs on second cruise, problem solved. The new slide was great and all of us liked it far better than AquaDunk on Magic, you can really get whipping down the curves.

Frozen show was full house every performance, matinees were most crowded. Miss the Route 66 theme however after hours was nicely done. Don't understand the change to Crown and Fin, really seems like the same place just called English now instead of Irish. Asked about pretzels and were told they will not be doing them anymore, we are guessing it may have something to do with them being on the bar menu in Crown and Fin, will have to see if this holds true for the longer cruises.

Both Castaway Cay days were great, water was a hair cooler on first stop, second stop great, lots of people in water all day. Agree that the beaches seem so less crowded with the Classic Ships, seemed like beach was half empty. Seas the last night a bit rougher than the relatively calm seas we had until then, part of this caused by our high speed given we left Nassau half hour late waiting for a family of 3 to return. No matter how many announcements they make and warn we have a very tight schedule getting back to Canaveral, always seems like there is someone who can't seem to get with the program.

pretzels were only on the last day of our cruise(day 6). i only noticed because that was the only time there was a line at Pinocchio's. hope they are on our upcoming 5night repo and alaska cruise

What was updated in The Golden Mickeys?

tangled and Princess and the Frog sections were new to us.

I didn't take notes about the specifics, and it's been a month, and I'm old ... :rolleyes1 so i am not remembering anything else. what's even harder to remember is what was "missing" from the show to make room for the new bits.

You can typically look up the shows on youtube for comparison.

Ooohhhh! I like that bag!!! Hopefully it'll still be around when I go in October! Fingers crossed!

Did anyone happen to notice if the water slide has an age or a weight minimum? We're taking our 4yo & 8yo on our first Disney cruise in November. Heading out on the Wonder to the Western Caribbean! :D

There is only a height minimum. Our DD was 43" and she was tall enough to ride it.

I've only sailed on the Wonder, 14 night WBPC and 7 night out of Galveston. I'm booked on the EBTA in May and am curious how the Magic will compare to the Wonder.

They are both great ships. We like the Wonder just a bit more now that it has Tiana's place, the frozen show and the new concierge lounge.
