Wonder --- if I book with points and then cancel....

So I know I am in the minority here, but if we were to book a cruise with points and then cancel it, outside the 30 day window, I am not going to be penalized and required to use the points before our contract month (November)?

Here's why I am asking... we planned to do Alaska on 2014, but given the uncertainty of that schedule, thought we would book something for 2013 and cancel once the schedule comes out and see that Disney will be going to Alaska on 2014.

I would be booking this week, and potentially canceling something next month after the schedule comes out.

Sorry this may be a super simple question, but we just joined last week and still learning.

If you book a cruise on points and cancel, those points are now reservation points and must be used before the end of the UY. They cannot be used for DVC resorts. There are a lot of penalties for canceling a cruise on points.

Why are you bothering to book something for 2013 if you don't plan to even go?

You need to learn a whole lot more about DVC before you use points outside of DVC.

I will go on 2013 if Disney stops going to Alaska after that. Right now is a contingency plan until the 2014 itinerary comes out.

As Deb & Bill said, if you book a cruise on points and then cancel, the points are returned to your account as "Reservation Points". They can only be used for another cruise or a Disney hotel reservation within the same UY as the original cruise reservation. The points will expire at the end of that UY. Also, there is no November Use Year so is your UY actually October or December perhaps?

If you want to book to have a 2013 cruise booked in case the 2014 itineraries aren't what you want, then you're best off booking with cash. You would owe only the deposit, which is fully refundable until the final payment date. If you decide to keep the cruise and want to use DVC points, you could cancel and then re-book with DVC.

There is a chance that cabins using DVC points won't be available later, but if you book with points, you will pay a non-refundable $75 fee. Also, as mentioned above, you would be limited in what you could do with the points if you cancel.

Booking with points makes sense only if you are sure of your date and unlikely to cancel or change. If you're hoping to change, it's an expensive option.

You are correct, Mommb. If you cancel and rebook, you pay another $75 fee.
