Woke up in the middle of the night with horrible vertigo, fell back asleep and woke up again in the morning with it.
Now it's gone. Very odd. I wonder what would have caused that. :confused3

Have you had it before?
My dh dh it and it makes him sick if it comes on.

That is how he feels too. He had gone to the doctor about it and has meds he takes when he feels it come on but he also has meneres disease which vertigo is part of the joy that comes along with it. Make a dr appt.

I see my Dr on Tuesday so I will mention it to her.

I have had it twice. It has to be the worst thing in the world to experience. I had it first time about 10 years ago and second time about 5 years ago. Have no clue what triggered it at all.

I keep 'meclizine' on hand all the time to quickly take and last time I had it, the meclizine worked great. If it had lasted a long time, like my first episode I would go to my MD.

"What is meclizine?
Meclizine is an antihistamine and anticholinergic. It works by blocking a chemical messenger in the brain, which helps to reduce or prevent vomiting.

Meclizine is used to treat or prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. It is also used for vertigo (or dizziness).
"

You can buy it right over the counter as in Bonine! :thumbsup2

Phors, I am so glad you are feeling better. Vertigo is just nasty. :headache:

I had that happen to me before. I had fluid in my ears and the motion from my rolling over in my bed in my sleep would cause the vertigo, which would then wake me up.

Exactly! That's what happened to me too. I always take a Bonine when it happens and it is VERY helpful. :thumbsup2

I've had it a few times over the years, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. My first bout was the worst, as it lasted 2 1/2 days. I got up in the morning and fell on my face, the room was spinning.

Since then, most of the timesI've had it,it has been fairly short lived. Just so you know, meclizine is the active ingredient in Dramamine. It does work, but will make you drowsy.

Actually, no, DIMENHYDRINATE is the active ingredient in regular Dramamine. That does make you drowsy.

Meclizine is the active ingredient in BONINE and also marketed as LESS-DROWSY Dramamine. It does not cause drowsiness in most people.

This is a very timely thread, I had a severe bout of vertigo last night and had to take a meclizine as well.

Ask your doctor if it could be positional vertigo. I used to get dizzy lying down with my head in certain positions. If I would move my head, the dizziness would go away. The doctor said it was little crystals in my inner ear that would shift when I moved my head the wrong way. She called it positional vertigo and had me take meclazine when it happened.

Those "little crystals" are otoliths. Google "BPV" or "BPPV". Basically it means that certain positions can cause the otoliths to get in a position that makes you dizzy or nauseous (vertigo). I have issues with this too, and the worst episodes occurred when I slept in an odd position without realizing it.

It's very common and while a nuisance, not medically dangerous. Here's a link (just a random one i googled that had a decent, short explanation):

Hope you're feeling better :goodvibes. I agree with Luv Bunnies & chamonix, sounds very much like BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). My Mom suffers with it occasionally and has meds that helps w/dizziness. Altho no laughing matter, actually rather scary, but we joke when her doctor says he needs to maniuver the rocks in her ears.

Here's BPPV link for info:

My concern is that you were complaining about chest pains or flutters the other day and now this symptom crops up. I think I would be calling the Dr and seeing if they can fit you in sooner. If nothing else, please make sure you bring up both symptoms to the Dr. and of course if other symptoms start presenting or you are in severe pain, please go to the ER!

My mom had this, wasn't very much fun.

I wonder if I have that? Every once in awhile I get dizzy in bed. It is very weird.

I had vertigo in my late 30's due to fluid in my ears. Eustacian tubes would not drain the fluid. Used the meclizine but symptoms did not go away completely, so I ended up with typanostomy tubes. The tubes solved the problem.

For the crystals-
I do know that there is a maneuver that can be performed to lessen the impact of the crystals on the inner ear. My brother works in physical therapy and thought maybe that was my problem originally.

Best of luck to you!
