WOC first show without dining package or dessert party

Hi all, hoping you can give me a reality check for my upcoming August trip. I'm considering trying to see the first WOC show with my almost-6 and 3 year olds without a dining package or the dessert party - just couldn't stomach the cost, as we opted to spend our budget on a character breakfast, F! dining package, G+, and a nicer/closer hotel. The second WOC show will be too late for the kiddos (honestly even the first show will really be pushing it, but hoping for good naps during our midday breaks!).

Assuming I can get a spot with the virtual queue (a big if, it seems?), will it be possible to get a halfway decent spot where the kids can actually see the show without camping out to claim a spot for hours? The view doesn't need to be amazing, just not totally obstructed by taller adults...waiting for over an hour will also be a deal breaker, as we only have one day in DCA and we'd rather use our limited time enjoying the park.

Is this doomed to failure? Any other tips or recommended viewing areas would also be appreciated! Thanks everyone!

We saw WOC on Sun 6/12. I got the first show in the virtual queue (was easy for me, just opened the thing and refreshed, refreshed, refreshed a couple minutes before 12:00). I did in line for Star Tours and the family in front of us got the first show too. We showed up around 8:30. I was fine with our spot. Not amazing, we had a light post in the middle but still good. I'm not willing to wait hours for a spot, so whatever I get with 30 min wait is fine with me. Here's the view I had. We probably could have moved up closer if we wanted to, but we were fine with where we were.

This is encouraging - thanks!!

Yeah, we did virtual queue as well. My family was done with rides and looking around by 730, so we just made our way over to the VQ entrance. They let us in about 745 or a little after and we just hung out people watching. Had a great view and a fun time.

Enjoy your trip!
