We are not sure which room category to take. We always wanted to watch the fireworks from our room, and we are told we can do that at the Disneyland Hotel, and that the DLH has that Disney Magic feel to it.Our main time out of 5 days would be at Disneyland over CA.
On the other hand we would be paying about the same price for a "woods" view at the GCH, and be close to both parks from what I understand and be at a luxxury hotel.
We have never been to DL and want to explore it all and make the most of our trip, but we just do not know which resort to book.

Can we please get some feedback on which Hotel we should choose.

DLH- UPPER With Fireworks and park view- $4728.00

GCH-"Woods" view- 4889.00

Thanks

:)

I would take the GCH view over the DLH any day of the week fireworks or not.

Jack

Grand Californian for sure. The two hotels aren't even in the same league.

What is your family configuration? I am asking because if you have small children, I would recommend DL hotel and if it is just adults, I would recommend GCH.

DLH has larger rooms that are brighter than the rooms at GCH so they really work better for a larger group. They're also...well, Disneyer. GCH currently has a nicer pool area because DLH's is being renovated, but I'm not sure when that is going to be done or how it might impact your trip. I didn't like the construction walls and pool work when we walked over to see it a few weeks ago.

DLH has nice family dining options that are better, IMO, than what is offered at GCH (mainly because they are more affordable and there are more choices). GCH has an awesome bar/lounge and fabulous adult dining options. I love sitting by the pool at GCH and enjoy ordering a drink. I used to like doing the same at DLH but I don't know what it's going to be like when the pool area is done--it may be noisier with the new waterslides and as I said previously, they're still working on it right now.

DLH has nice touches, free coffee in the lobby, characters roaming around and is close to the Monorail, RFC, Compass Bookstore (for coffee/coffee drinks). GCH has a lodgy feel, seems more geared toward adults and older children and is more of a luxury option.

Having the entrance to DCA right in GCH is a huge plus--more so than proximity to the monorail, IMO.

So...my general advice to people with younger children or larger parties is to stay at DLH and for adults I'd recommend GCH. We are a family of 5 but now that the kids are older, we find we prefer GCH. However, we've not been back to DLH as a family since all of the remodeling so we'll have to see.

Hi Dizme,

It is myself, DW and DS 14. Thinking about what everyone has said, I think I'll go with the GCH as we did all the chracter things when our son was younger. Now time for a little Disney luxury at he GCH! LOL!

We had the GCH downtown view as my pic shows, but did u know its shaped like a U. From the elevator, you have to walk all the way from one end (elevator) to the other end where your room is-long walk!

Yes, I definitely agree with you--GCH is the place you want to be!! There is a wing that has its own elevator bank. One side has a woods/theme park view (GRR area) and the rooms on the other side have a pool view. That location is SO convenenient because many of the rooms at GCH have a very long walk to reach the elevators. We stayed in a theme park view room a few weeks ago and our room number was 4357 and we were at the end of the hall. We loved having the separate elevator bank! It takes you down to a tiny lobby right next to Napa Rose and Storyteller's Cafe. It's literally steps from the DCA entrance and you're right there next the pool when you come out. It's easy to get to everything from there.

Diz me, I have a "woods view" room booked, and a couple of questions if you don't mind?

1) Where are they located ( as far as being a long walk) ?

2) Is the location of the pool room worth the extra $$$ ?

3) Is there any chance of an upgrade at the GCH?

Thanks

Thanks. But can I ask why ?

:)

We have stayed at a number of places except the PPH and we like everything about the hotel. Have not stayed at DLH since way before the remodel.
This last August our roomhad a pool view and was right above the Redwood trails. I did not like it for a starter but the view grew on me. I like the view we had the year before of the parks, love to watch the people and activities when DCA closed. Our choice from now on.

I voted for the DLH. I would take it over the GC any day. I love the remodeled rooms.
I also love seeing the fireworks at night from our room.

Well, first let me give you my very biased opinions.

DLH is wonderful and I don't mean to sound biased against it because up until recently, it was our hotel of choice. I just don't like the construction going on right now and since I don't know when your trip is scheduled, I wanted to make sure to mention that it was, a few weeks ago, still undergoing major renovations. This included most of the lobby being shut off.

It does have larger rooms and they are nicely redecorated, but with 2 adults and a 14-year-old, the "magical" headboard and room for a daybed probably isn't as important to you as the nicer location and more luxurious feel of GCH would be. With DLH, I did not want to pay extra for a premium view room only to be looking at a construction site.

I *personally* don't get the big deal of watching fireworks from your room. A lot of people enjoy it and I've done it before...a few years ago, my sister and I had an upper level resort view room in Frontier Tower (facing DTD) at DLH and as it was shortly before the remodel, there were still sliding doors that opened. We sat on our couch (which we pulled in front of the open sliders) and watched the fireworks with a glass of wine in hand. It was great, but not so much because of the fireworks! It was the holiday season, we were having fun, music was floating up from below and there was a giant Christmas tree directly below and in front of us. The view of the fireworks was ok but nothing like being in the park. If you really want to see the fireworks, I would say to just view them from inside DL! I never hold a spot but still manage to see them just fine when I want to. I'm usually more interested in other things, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt

Now, as to your questions.

1. It is easier for me to show you on a map where the woods view rooms are. I'm not an expert but I think this map helps a lot:
gchmap.jpg

Any room in the "horseshoe" around the pool is good--elevators are close by. Those would be pool view rooms.

The right wing of the horseshoe (rooms 333-359) and I believe the far side of the 'L' shaped wing directly across from it would be woods view rooms on the 2nd and 3d floors. Above that (4th-6th floors), they become premium views!

The big rectangular space with a small opening on one side is the Brisa courtyard, and rooms around it would be courtyard view. The monorail runs through it. On the outside of that is DTD.

2. Is the location of the pool view worth the extra money? Well, it depends on a few things, like how much extra money they're charging you, how long you're staying, and how important a slightly better view is to you. In general, no, for me it isn't worth it. We paid for the top tier room Oct. 13 (requested theme park view, but it was same price as pool view) and it was only marginally (if any) better than the tier below it, which I believe was a woods view. I would request a woods view near the elevators. I think it may be in the same category as a courtyard view, which IMO is no big deal. Those used to be standard until recently. The monorail goes through but it's nothing much to see, though it is better than a parking lot view so there is something to that idea.

Anyway, the only thing that separates many of the woods view rooms from the premium rooms is floor location! The woods view are levels 1-3, so they are exactly the same location, just lower down. They may have some pool or theme park views but the views will be at least partially obstructed by trees. I *personally* plan to try for a woods view and try to get 3rd floor near the elevators.

3. Is there any chance of an upgrade at GCH? Well, I've heard of it, but it doesn't happen often (has never happened to me!). The general rule of thumb is that if you really want a particular view, then reserve it. Now that they have added extra tiers to the room categories, there may be more upgrading if the hotel isn't full, particularly from standard to whatever is above that now. But if you're going during a busy time, there is very little chance of an upgrade and they never upgrade to concierge or suites unless some major snafu has occurred and they're trying to keep the customer happy. Even then it's very unlikely at GCH!

I'm going to try to post a little clearer picture of the room map and one of the ground floor as well so you can sort of superimpose one over the other to get an idea of location.

That little aisle between Napa Rose and #13 on the map is the entrance to DCA. All of that area to the right of the 'L' wing and the wing to the right of the pool is DCA. The two areas marked 'E'...next to Napa Rose and below the Brisa Courtyard label...are the elevator banks. The main elevators are off the lobby and are the ones on the map shown below Brisa Courtyard.

I can't seem to get the room map to come out clearly so I'll just include a link where you can see it better: http://www.go2mickey.com/images/maps/gcroomlocalmap.jpg

Note that the room numbers are the same for every floor with the floor number added to the beginning. For example, room 357 on the 4th floor becomes room 4357, on the 5th floor 5357, and so on.

Hi Dizme,

Thanks for all the info!

:)

Based on what you said you are looking for you will be happy with your decision. There has been some really good suggestions for room requests. Based on my personal experience a woods view can be so far back you almost have to hail a cab to get to the lobby;). Also on the other hand we have had rooms overlooking the lobby and could hear the daily noise from the lobby from dawn till late at night. Somewhere in between provides the right balance:thumbsup2
