WL or POLY

We've stayed at both, and much prefer the Poly. Love the theming and landscaping. We really like Captain Cooks for quick food service. The rooms do seem a bit dark, but I didn't think our room at WL was all that bright either. We did not care for Roaring Forks at WL. Just didn't care for the taste of the food. The Poly being on the monorail is very convenient when going to MK and Epcot.

I think WL is very pretty, but wouldn't stay there again. We had a rental car when we stayed there, so I can't comment on their transportation.

KatMark, no offense, but every time someone discusses WL you chime in with its rude staff and horrible food. You had one experience, why keep harping on it? Over the last 20 days you put down WL over 35 times (yes I counted in your posts)

Get over it please, its getting old

Really, you counted these comments?:rotfl:

No offense, but this is a public discussion forum, and any of us can post our negative and positive comments about any resort, as many times as we wish.

The POLY and WL are our favorite resorts to stay at and both have pros and cons. What we find as a pro might be a con for you; as you will fiind everyone on these boards have fantastic and expert advise on both resorts, good and bad. It might be helpfull if you tell us who is going...a family of little ones compared to a couple will have different pros and cons.

It is just my husband and I who usually go; I also take my 80 year old mother too. There are so many different aspects when I choose a resort. Is the trip your first time at the parks?

Will you be spending more time at the MK or EPCOT, HS,AK? Transportation will be important. The pros of the POLY are the ease of transportation in regard to the monorail. We feel that hands down the monorail is by far the quickest way to get to the MK and the TTC ( where you can take the monorail to EPCOT). You will need to take a bus at both resorts to go to HS and the AK. The bus system at both resorts have been a hit and miss with us. The boat transportation to the MK at bothe resorts has been the same...sometimes you have to wait a while and others the boat is waiting for you.

The theme of the resorts are sooo different! The POLY is very lush and tropical and the WL has a north western feel to it. The Pros of the POLY are many! We love the decor of the rooms, main buildings and the tropical landscape. The POLY beach is an excellent way to watch the fireworks at night and the water parade.... not to mention a great view of the castle. You will not be able to see the fireworks & castle from the WL beach.

There are pools at both resorts and they can get crowded! We love the quiet pool at the POLY; the volcano pool is usually VERY crowded for us to relax in. The quiet pool at the WL is part of the WL Villas and is much smaller.
The main pool at the WL is nice, but does not have the volcano and the great slide for kids at the POLY. There is a slide in the main pool at the WL and a seperate kiddie pool. Ther is no hot tub at the POLy, which is such a shame. The WL has 3 hot tubs...2 at the main pool and one at the villa pool.

The rooms are so different at each resort too. The POLY rooms are much bigger than the WL. The rooms are in multiple outer buildings at the POLY compared to being under one room at the WL. There are balconies or patios in all the rooms at the WL, where the POLY some of the 2nd floor buildings not not have balconies. The noise level can be high at the WL if you are in a lobby room. I think these are some of the woods view, standard and honeymoon suite rooms. The POLY was quieter even though we were in a first floor room facing the lagoon of the Tonga building. There was alot of foot traffic...especially at night when people were going to and from the luau.

The restaurants are simply not compareable. The POLY has far more choices in sit down restaurants and better counter service. O'hana and Konas at the POLY were fantastic...Whispering Canyon Cafe and Artist Point at the WL were ok. The counter service at the POLY, Captain Cooks had much more to offer and didn't seem as crowded as Roarking Forks at the WL. The Tampu Lounge at the POLY has some great drinks :cool1:! Territory Lounge at the WL has your standard bar cocktails/beers. The pool bars were very similar to us. The main thing about the POLY in regards to food, is that you can simply hop on the monorail with ease and go to the Grand Floridian and the Contemporary for other sit down restaurants and counter service. At the WL you will need to take the boat over to the Contemporary and then take the monorail. For us...its to much of a hassel.

I have to mention the price difference between the two...the POLY is more expensive. Location, Location, Location!!! You simply can't beat the location of the POLY. The WL is much cheaper and one of the cheapest Deluxe resorts on site. We like to stay at the deluxe resorts but unless we get a fantastic rate, we usually stay at the WL.

Not sure if you are looking to stay on the club level or not. We have stayed at both and at other Deluxe resorts. I believe they have the best IPO and CLs. They are very differnt and you do get what you pay for in the cost. Having stayed in the standard and honeymoon suites at both, there are pros and cons with each. If so let me know...I will add those also :)

Hope this wan't too long and that it helped somewhat. :confused3

Have a fantastic trip!!

Monorail transportation is GREAT! But you pay for it too. The boat is a very nice perk from the WL too. When we stayed at WL we waited nearly 40 mins for a bus to EPCOT in that time the crowd waiting became HUGE so we decided to take the boat to Contemporary & hop on a monorail to TTC & then onto to Epcot. Ran into a lady we had waited with for a bus & she filled us in that she waited another 20 min. for a bus. Now, sometimes the bus system is great -I think when it's a busy time of yr more buses are out....just our experience.

We often take the boat to the Contemporary and then get on the monorail to go to Epcot. If I am with my mother, we wait for the bus. The walk from the boat dock to the building and to the monorail is a bit long for her; we then rent a wheelchair when we get to the parks.

Wow. :sad2: I most certainly take offense to your post. What, exactly, is your point in making these comments and going to the extreme of counting her posts? :confused3 Harping? Really? The OP wanted to hear the good and bad about WL and the Poly. KatMark kindly gave her opinion. It just happens that she prefers the Poly over WL. Why does that bother you? If it is "getting old" and bothers you, may I respectfully suggest skipping past her posts and refrain from making rude remarks.

Poly IF you can afford it, but if you can't then there's no need to sacrifice.

Poly just has so much to do and a dole whip is just steps away from your room!!! (I've died and gone to heaven)

I am taking it all in. Thanks for the info. My wife and I will be bringing my DD for her 3rd birthday. It's going to be to hot when we go to keep her at the parks all day so I want to make sure the resort has a lot to offer a toddler.

Can the fireworks be seen from the beach at WL? Does the EWP come by WL?

I believe you can only see the fireworks if you have a room on one of the top floors-yes-we sat on the beach & watched the EWP.

I think the WL Villas have a kitchnette in them...not sure if the rooms are nicer. I know you can see the water parade from the WL beach...not sure about the fireworks.

This has been Kat's experience with WL...why wouldn't she share what she has experienced?! Kat, I am quite positive the rest of us value and appreciate your contributions on the Dis! :goodvibes

I had to make that choice last year for our Sept 2009, between the Poly and the WL. I cannot tell you how happy I was with what I chose. I love nearly everything about that resort, the Poly... not so much. Back when I had to make that decision, it wasn't really a tough one but I still kept second guessing myself.

So when we actually went in Sept, and again in April 2010, we visited the Poly many times (we even had 4 meals there during both trips, and used it as a hub) I was so glad I went with the WL.

I hate the outer buildings, it reminds me of the moderate or value resorts... which they're aren't bad at all, but it's not something I want when paying so much for a room. The hotel decor itself reminds me of an 80s version of a Polynesian nightmare, and I've heard the conditions of the rooms are really awful lately, through the DIS, a couple of other forums and through a family I know who went recently. Another huge complaint I've heard is the over crowdedness of the pool. Again, not something I'd expect when paying a lot for a room.

I really love the WL. A lot. If I could stay there every time, I would but sometimes the funds just don't allow it (broke college student). When we do get to stay there, it's courtyard view all the way: there's nothing like being able to sit out on your balcony with a view of the beautiful grounds and pool and watching the EWP with the music being piped in. The counter service is decent, though I think Poly has the best of the deluxe resorts, imo. It has a nice variety, but it can get very busy. I like Artist Point and WCC and I like being so close to the monorail resorts and FW, and MK.

You can see the fireworks from various parts of the WL, but overall, it's not a good place to catch them. No biggie, that's what dinner at California Grill, Ohana and Narcoossee's are for :)

As you can see on my signature, while I love the WL, it's my favorite. And while we like to try new places, WL will always be #1.

Whatever this poster might say KatMark is a great person. And while she might not love the resort I do, she's definitely entitled to her opinion, just as I am, just as you are. The difference in her opinion and your opinion is that you are attacking someone personally, and she isn't. Not cool.

There is an ignore option you know, I use it, and it works well. You just see when that person posts, not what they write. Maybe you should take advantage of that as well.

I have stayed at both properties. Both are beautiful properties but I would choose the WL. My reasons:

-Poly is spread out. It can be a hike to the main building and the main themed pool. All the walking is outside, so it can be hot or chilly getting to the pool.
-I prefer the dramatic lobby of the WL. I enjoyed just sitting in the lobby by the fireplace and drinking a cup of coffee.
-Having been to Hawaii a few times, the Poly is just not the same as the real thing. Whereas, the WL is actually nicer than the National Park Lodges in the west.
-WL is a better value.
-Disney Transportation is only as good as the actual trip you take. Meaning, some people have good experiences, some hate it. Sometimes it is great and sometimes it stinks. I have seen long lines for the monorail. I have waited in long lines for buses and boats. Personally, I hate parking a rental car at a theme park, trying to find it after a long day, get into a hot car, get lost heading back to my resort and trying to find a place to park at the hotel.

If transportation and access to Magic Kingdom is your highest priority, stay at the Contemporary. If you want a more relaxed environment, I would go for WL. If you really want a larger room, stay at one of the vacation club properties. If you want to sit on the beach and watch fireworks over the Poly, nothing is stopping you from doing it. You don't have to be a overnight guest to enjoy.

Keep in mind, you are choosing between to great properties. If anyone truly has a "horrible" experience at either, I seriously question if they are just picky complainers. I have stayed at many hotels in my career and the WDW properties are pretty nice.

Both are great places to stay and yes both can have their off days. They are staffed by humans so it does happen.

to the OP, when are you going that makes a difference in which resort I would recommend.

Have stayed at both and would choose the Poly. Transportation, service, dining, room decor and theming are the big reasons. I won't go back to the WL unless several other resorts (ranging from value to deluxe) are unavailable. JMO, YMMV.

Watching the fireworks from the beach at POLY is a factor in my desicion. Are you sure they let you do that? The main factor in my decision is how much will my toddler be ablr to do at the resort. She will need to get away from the parks for a while so I want to have a lot to offer her. The other decision is travel becasue we are only there for 3 days in the parks and 4 nights. We are going in about a month.

I did not upgrade to Poly for our trip next week for the sole reason that they can't guarantee a balcony there. That is a biggie for us. If paying for a deluxe, I want a balcony or patio.
