Wk of May 14--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Greetings all. Today was a rest day. I tried to sleep until 6:00 but between DH and the cat......

Dave - How about some walking? That will keep you in the training groove. I feel badly for you. :wizard:

Kevin - That's some great advice you gave Dave. :thumbsup2

Amy - Ohh, I feel badly for you too. :wizard: Let's think of something to get you guys out of these slumps. Hmmmm.... :mickeybar

Cam - Ha ha! You're in luck! Tomorrow is not a rest day! I'll be very glad to virtually train with you. :thumbsup2 OK, now, set your alarm for 4:30am.... Oh you made me laugh so much with the new smilie in your signature! "Now I'm scared". Gee, if I lived in Chicago you could come stay with us. Well, if you want to do the NYC Marathon, let me know! We are about 40 minutes north of Manhattan. :teeth:

Thanks Sunny - That's a great compliment! I give you part credit really --- after reading your journal, I started to run.....I really don't think I would have taken it on otherwise :goodvibes

Jodi

Oh thank you, Jodi :grouphug: I needed that right about now. At the moment, walking across the parking lot is equivalent to a half marathon! I made the mistake of coming to work today  Can we say "oxygen depletion"?

As for the charity drive-- yes! I haven't given up on the idea, I just didn't want to beat everyone over the head prematurely :teeth:

Thanks, Dave for finding the thread and posting it.

Here is my first stab at a website: firstgiving.com/WISHteam I've also started an "e-Zine" sort of page that will tell great things about us that can be used to ease into the "giving" site but its no where near ready for prime time ;) NOTE: I plan to replace the old logo with the picture taken at WL last year if no one objects. Also, I plan to contact firstgiving and ask if its possible to have the wording changed from "I, me and my" to "us". They are preset for individuals.

I'd love any feedback, input anyone has on the blurb about us. Of course Cam is right there front and center :grouphug: (without names), I'd like to highlight some of the great overcomer stories we have here and use that as a spring board as to why we want to "give back" in our own gratitude.

I think I'll load up my laptop and go home now. I'm way too dizzy to be at work :sad2:

Jodi, if you want to setup your own drive, just go to firstgiving.com and follow the instructions. I contacted the NKF and asked their opinion of fg and it was very favorable. FG charges 7.5% on the donations, but 2.5% of that goes directly to the credit card fee so they really only charge 5%. Its a safe, easy, accountable way to raise the funds.

Jodi -- Is your DH flying from a different airport than you? Do you need help figuring out which ones might be cheaper alternatives for him? Personally, I am still desperate for SWA to release their dates for September (they are only taking reservations through 9/12 right now), because I HAVE to figure out airfare to the Disneyland 1/2!

Hi Cam :wave2:

No, DH will be flying from the same airport as me but he will be flying out on a different day than me. I'm flying out on Thursday --- He will be leaving Friday evening....but I want to be able to schedule the same flight back. The flight that is really killing me with the price is his flight out on Friday (I guess they consider that peak time and charge more).

I was looking at Delta, for right now but might see what else leaves out of Bradley.....although, I really like Delta :goodvibes

Sunny!!!! You get yourself home to bed ASAP! Besides needing a ton of rest, your immune system is very weak right now. You cannot afford to be in public and pick up something else. That could put you in the hospital!!!!

PS - I'm only being mean because I feel bad enough that you're sick. The thought of your getting worse is terrible. Please take care of yourself!

wow...always so much going on here!!

I have to put myself in with those who have struggled with runs over the last few days. After a great 6 miler on Saturday (under 1 hour) and a rest day on Sunday, I had the absolute worst run ever on Monday. I could only complete 2 miles (20 minutes) of a planned 45 minute run. It was even difficult to walk. I'm guessing that the 6 miles had more of an impact on my body than I thought (it's the longest I have ever ran).

Now the funny thing is that I had an awesome crosstraining day on the elliptical yesterday! 40 minutes went by quick and it seemed so effortless...the exact opposite of Monday's experience.

So I'm gonna keep with the cross training for a couple days and then probably run another 5k race this Saturday.

It's nice to have this group though...you get to see other people going through the same things that you are going through.

have a good week WISH team!

For all those struggling for a bit...

From March 2005 to Dec 2005, I struggle diwth all but a handful of weekday rights. They just never felt good. Saturdays, I did ok. (Except when it was too hot (most of the summer) and too icy. But I pulled it off just fine at the end.

I don't think any of you will struggle for that long, but if your body's saying I need a break, give it a few days. The last 16 to 20 weeks is when to really push. Also, the taper will do wonders fro you. Hang in there everyone! It's hard because we've lost a bit of our initial "I'm runnign a marathon!" enthusiasm and real training seems so far away, but it's important not to slack too much now.

My best recommendation is to give your legs a little break, but maybe you need a change of scenery or something to switch things up for you. Drive to a new park or find a buddy or buy new tunes for the mp3. Something ot distract yo from the monotony adn just let yourself go. Maybe even not wearing your Garmin :O or only letting yourself look at it certain times so you're not always worried about pace. Just try to go and have fun. The days I take all pressure off myself are teh days I do best.

Fun story - Most of you know I complaned A LOT about runnign with dh last year, but would not have made it w/o him. DH told my dad that he would not have finished without me pushing him end of the race. I knew he was hurting, but did not know how much. Not that I'm glad he was having a hard time, but it's nice to know that I didn't really hold him back in the end. :cloud9:

Go team go!!! ;) :cheer2:

Jodi, hold on tight, wait until the Fall for prices to come down. I believe it was September I scored a $99 roundtrip fare from Greensboro, NC to Orlando on Delta. They had a great sale for about 2 weeks.

I was very excited for the $99 fare, the whole family came.

Judy, you live that close to Manhatten??? Ooooh, I think we should keep that in mind for future NYC marathons! :wave2:

I ditto Carrie's entire post. Very well said. For the first timers among us, it's important to really try and maintain that enthusiasm and at the same time temper it until the "real" training starts. I didn't actually run the WDW Marathon the first time I signed up. Or the second. It was actually the FOURTH time. My M.O. was always the same.... start out gangbusters for 6 to 8 weeks, get burned out and then give it up. I would hate for anyone here to suffer that same fate. Ditto injuries. You don't have to best yourself everytime out, or even come close. This is supposed to be fun!! :cheer2:

Carrie-- Wouldn't you know it, Allegiant only flies to Orlando two times a week...and not on my dates. Drat!

Cam-- For now, yes, all done with school for now. Since I wised up and am being a bit more reasonable with my course load next year, there was no reason to take a class this summer. Classes don't start up again until August 28th. Oh, and it actually wasn't too bad with the weights and running to be honest. I have it set up where I do two muscle groups per day (For example, yesterday was bi's and tri's- 4 exersices per, 8 total). As long as I do upper body on my run days, I'm usually fine. Lifting legs and then running is always a mistake for me.

Excellent - Great to know, I knew my team mates at Dis would know about flights, etc. :goodvibes

Just back from another 4 mile walk today. I only have 2 weeks left til my first 10k in Boulder, Co. I'm really looking forward to this trip. My girlfriend and I are going to spend the night in Boulder, :cheer2: before the race, so we don't have to rush around the morning of the race. I'm really looking forward to my "girls" night out.....hubbies are staying home!

I had to give this an international note ;)

Ha, I took 2 years of german in High School and remember teeny bits of it. Thanks!!!!

Last night at 8:20 PM, I went out for a run. My crazy life has prevented me from doing anything for myself lately (that and the rain). So I decided that I could do 2 miles before it turned totally dark... and I jogged the entire thing. I was so proud of myself. For some reason I thought that after 1 1/2 weeks of nothing that I wouldn't be able to jog more than a block. Silly me. I took it slow and finished in about 25 minutes, including a couple warm up and cool down blocks.

AND, I am so tired of morons yelling out their vehicle windows when I am jogging. What compels people to be so disrespectful???

I'm still catching up on posts...

We booked our flight a couple weeks ago. Flights out of Wisconsin are higher in price and frequency. We were able to score round trip for $200. We were hoping for a little lower, but the price keeps going up and once the plane fills you are out of luck here. We are driving to Milwaukee because they had the best rate. Last November we got round trip for $180 each and that is the lowest we have ever found. Also, we needed to book for 6 people (gag, the in-laws begged to come along!)

And for the Chicago Marathon... I live about 4 1/2 hours away. If anyone needs a place you are welcome. Maybe one day I too can run Chicago... I love that city!!!

I 2nd the comment about you'all being such a great support team. Your encouragement is awesome. :thumbsup2 I haven't done anything since the Indy Mini as my knees are still a little tender after 13+ miles. I am going to listen to my wise WISH coaches and just take some nice easy walks this week and see if I can work up to jogging next week. I'll just have to be patient :hourglass until I'm physically (and a little mentally) ready to get back out there. Have a great one...

LOL, Jen you got me excited! I am running Chicago this year and really don't want to pay the $250++ per night for a downtown hotel. Is the 4 1/2 hours a typo? Wouldn't that be a long commute race morning? :rotfl2:

Oh, Sara, Sara, Sara, I already registered for Chicago which is the weekend before MCM. It will have to wait until 2007. You go girl! :thumbsup2 I friend of mine signed up today too. They say the 30,000 limit filled in 66 hours last year.

You do give me hope that I can run a marathon in late October and then be ready to run Disney in early January.

Monte, great job on the 4miles.

Enjoy the cx when that's what's going great and don't worry about the running. I have a total love/hate relationship with running. When I love it, its the greatest thing on earth, when I hate it... look out, it ain't pretty!

So Scott, what are you doing at 9PM eastern time tonight :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2:

I had never even heard of Lost up until a few months ago. My bro insisted I take his season 1 dvds. I thought it sounded silly (mondern day Gilligan's Island sort of thing). I popped the pilot in the dvd player around 9PM on a Friday night and finally dragged my sorry self to bed somewhere around 3AM! Yes I am totally hooked! I can't wait until 9PM :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc I took a good 4 hour nap so I would have enough energy to stay awake for it :rotfl:

LOL! :thumbsup2 I am so addicted to that show it isn't even funny...I am so intrigued at how the whole thing is playing out and amazed that the writers can keep it so fresh for so long. Tonight and next week are gonna be awesome..then it's going to be a loooonnnggg summer without Lost! (guess I'll just have to run at 9pm on Wednesdays to fill the gap :rotfl2:

Oh and to keep on topic...I had another great 40 minute elliptical workout tonight and the soreness is virtually gone so it looks like I'll be doing another 5k race this Saturday (addicted to those too!).

OK, I got my butt out and ran today. Only 30 minutes and it was not pretty, but I did it adn that's all that matters right now I'm putting in the steps! ;) Didn't help that the Garmin told me I was going anywhere from 9 mpm to 18 mpm. DOn't think it likes teh tress getting thier leaves. It'll be fine when I run farther though.

Love the new shoes!!!
