Wk of May 13--WISH Walking/Running Club

Shan - I hate to say this, but it's by no means uncommon that you reach a point wher adding runnign slows you down. You have to decide what' smore important to you. Pace orpercent run? Whe chose to do all run, but accept that the pace does go down. You'll have to decide for yourself. OCngrats aon the amount of run, though!

That just seems so weird to me! I was really surprised when I finished my workout and it told me my pace. I thought for sure it was gonna be my best yet since I increased my running time.

Nope, I'm gonna stick with the program. I now just feel slow as molasses. I don't know how DH ran under a 10 minute pace for a half.

Waiting on my skirtsport. I hope it comes in the mail today! :yay:

Jeanne – what an awesome picture! You guys look so happy! Congratulations, again! You don’t even look tired. All that training definitely paid off for both of you.

Kevin – so nice to see you here!

Martha – woohoo on signing up for the full! :woohoo: Good luck with your training for Leadville. Just the name makes me think I’d be slugging along, even if it weren’t for the very intimidating elevations!

Colleen and Christa – Do neither of you know what “moderation” means? Your mileage blows me away! Good job, guys! :thumbsup2

Dave – I love how you take it easy and then do an awesome pace for 3.14. :cool1: Yeah, I wanna take it easy like that!

Dana – Great job!

Lily – those pictures are literally awesome! What an interesting locale for your wogs! Not sure how you can keep up the pace with so much to be distracted by around you.

Stephanie – all I can say about your 5k is OMG!!!! You were burning up that course, girl! Shouldn’t you be resting and recovering? :rotfl:

Mel – I cannot believe how fast your pace is and how much you have improved over time. You really give me hope and inspire me. Now if I could just lose as much weight as you have, I might find my pace improving!

Jen – so sorry about DH’s knee. Sending him pixiedust: and :goodvibes

Welcome Jen! :welcome:

Craig – I know life is so crazy for you right now, but wanted to send you  and best wishes as you all get ready for Lesley’s graduation!

Mike – Unlike Craig, I wouldn’t vote to keep you out! I’d make you President and Master of Ceremonies! Thank you for sharing your awesome sense of humor!

Angie – I’m so sorry to hear about your back. I WISH I had advice but can only offer a

Kristi - OMG! That is so impressive!!! :thumbsup2

Christa – sending a  to your DD. How sad for her. I hope the Benadryl helps and quickly.

Shan – great job on stepping up to the next level! Don’t worry – your pace will pick up again as your body gets used to the longer running intervals. :cheer2:

Thank you everyone for the congrats on my “release” and the kind words from my cardiologist.

I know this belongs on the race reports thread, but since it is the only “training” I have to report, I’ll tell you about the 5k we did yesterday morning. We got home the night before at 1:20 a.m., at which point I still had to do my 100 crunches and 100 push-ups before falling in to bed to sleep until 6:45 a.m. So, even though my time was 41:56, which was slower than I'd have liked, I am not beating myself up over it.

Can't wait to break 40 minutes, but my splits were really wonderful for me, especially a week after Minnie and after the stonker of last week where I barely made it a mile with shin splints:
mile 1 -- 12:27 (best speed 8:56)
mile 2 -- 13:53 (best speed 10:04)
mile 3 -- 13:08 (best 9:53)
.2 miles -- 13:18 pace (best 11:08)

Really not bad, but I am going to work on the jogging intervals to become a bit more regular. I obviously was flat out running for a few seconds here and there to make up some distance, but for the most part, I was walking, rather than even wogging.

The kicker? I would have been in the top 3 walkers if I'd done one more wogging interval past the 2 women who kept jogging past me every time I got ahead of them. I missed it by 20 seconds!

The course was lots and lots of hills. Howard was off his best time by almost 5 minutes and one of the top male walkers told me it took him 4 minutes more than his very consistent, normal time, so I don't feel too badly about it.

:welcome: Pats fan Jen!

Is there some kind of taper madness going around? Y'all are crackin' me up today.

Shan...every time I transitioned to a greater run/walk ratio, I slowed down a bit. Just seems to take some time to adjust to the new interval. I have recently discovered that I actually run about the same pace for a 5K whether I run the whole time or R4/W1. I prefer the intervals both mentally and physically, so I'm sticking with them.

Martha...welcome to the dark side of full marathon madness! That's what happens when the half is just not enough anymore ;)

Kevin...glad you're groovin' again :dancer:

Judy...get better soon.

:wizard: to everyone with pain issues, both chronic and otherwise. Back pain is tough to fix.

I just put a new song on the Shuffle, I Don't Feel Like Dancin' by Scissor Sisters. It's on the Flushed Away DVD in the extra section...the slugs sing part of it :lmao:

I had a good mother's day up until DD4 fell into my uncle's pool. We're planning swim lessons over the summer but can't sign up for the next session until June. I saw her fall and got to her in probably less than a minute (fully clothed into the water), so no real harm done. Just can't get the 'what-ifs' out of my head.

I haven't looked at my schedule but I know I have either 30 or 40 min on tap for today. We have a hurricane shutter guy coming out this evening so will probably be a late outside or TM run. I figure once we spend $10K on hurricane shutters, we'll never have another hurricane. :thumbsup2

Mel - OMG!!! SO glad your dd was ok!!! I cannot imagine how long those 30 seconds seemed or how many what ifs are going through your head. :grouphug: lol, sounds liek hurricane insurance to me. ;) Let's hope that's true.

My goodness! I leave DH alone for 5 minutes and look at the havoc he has wreaked! I promise to keep a much closer eye on him. I will take away his computer privileges (and I can do that, you know) and maybe his shoes so he cannot go anywhere and make him write, 100 times, "I will play nice with the others in my playgroup." :love2:

Thanks to everyone who has welcomed me to the dark side, i.e. the full marathon. I still need to come up with a plan. Yes, I'm starting at higher miles than from 0 but it is still a very loooooooooooong way to think about. Princessmomma: I'm looking forward to the wine and dine!

Mike: he's just jealous.

Mel: I am so glad DD is OK!

Cam: awesome job on the 5K!! :cool1:

Bill: my suggestion for grading papers was to spread them all out on the floor and put a cat treat on each one. The first one the cat ate, that paper got the highest grade. The last one eaten was the lowest grade. I think that's fair, don't you?

Kevin: those times would work for you but I know how you feel. Give yourself a day of rest before heading out again!

Judy: get better!!!

Today is a walking with incline day. Tomorrow is off b/c, as DH said, MIL comes in. This is the beginning of the big graduation week. Lots of family arriving. I hope it goes smoothly! Wish us luck!

Martha - Tip #1: DOn't even think about the whole distance yet! I don't even do that the day of the race. One step/benchmark/mile/week at a time!

Kevin - 3 days in a row seems a bit much, even for someone trainign for the Goofy. ;)

Umm, Hi!

I haven't been here in months, but I have been running! I'm up to 4.5 mi for my long runs.

Now it's warm, and I have to move outside...can't exactly do the Donald on my TM...

I'm looking for suggestions for an ipod or MP3. I know absolutely nothing about them, other than I need to load music through my computer after we buy it. I need something I can run outside with, and hopefully small and light. DH and I are getting them as anniversary presents, so we can both get moving outside.

I also signed up for my first 5K on June 9th. I'm going to catch up on this thread and post again -- I hope everyone is doing great and enjoying being active!

Maria

Jen - Welcome to the group!! We always have room for one more!!

Christa - poor thing.... I hope she feels better soon. I have had a reaction like that to the Watermelon scented Bullfrog sunscreen before. It is not fun!!

Kevin - remember if your 20 miler is on the ship, that your garmin won't calculate correctly. You'll be done in a flash!!

Mel - isn't it terrifying when they do that. I had both of mine go in at the same time, and neither could swim. I grabbed the oldest first because he was closer and then swam to the baby who was sinking. It was seriously scary!!

Maria - Welcome back!!

Here's some pics to show you guys the fire that started near our side of town yesterday. It was a 150 acre wildfire.

Luckily, the smoke was gone by today and they had gotten the fire under countrol. It had both sides of I-95 shut down for most of the afternoon/evening. With the smoke gone this morning I was able to go out and get another 3 miles in this morning. I finished in 25:55 avg 8:38 mpm. I am trying to convince DH to take me to EPCOT this weekend since I didn't get anything for Mother's Day, but I don't know yet wether or not it has worked!! I am just trying really hard to build up my mileage in preparation for this years marathon. Last year I kind of squeaked by and didn't do anywhere near as well as I had hoped. And who knows..... if I can break a sub 4:30 this year I might just go Goofy next year!!

Dana

Hey all! Got 3 miles in at an easy pace this am and then some weight work. Then got a call from my mom, she had sprained her ankle--so I had to help out with my niece for awhile. Now, I gotta shower and get ready to take DD to a mother/daughter spa thing. Ready for my mini-massage!

Mel--OMG! So glad she was okay--I can't even imagine what must've been going through your mind

christa--hope you DD is better. Those allergic reactions can be scary

Mike/Craig--Are we playing nice now????:rotfl2:

Judy--sorry you have a cold! PD that it goes away quickly!:wizard:

Angie--so sorry to hear about your back. Hope yours and your DH's gets better soon!

Dana--Wow on the fires! Glad they are now under control. Hope your DH allows the EPCOT day. That's how I talked DH into taking me last Sunday--birthdays and Mother's Day can really guilt them into just about anything;)

Jen--Welcome!!!!:yay: :yay:

Okay, off to the showers for me! Have a great rest of the day all!

Hi guys! Just trying to ease myself back into posting on this thread. It truly goes too fast for me!

I took the week off after Minnie (am I the only one? ) and just ran again today. 3 miles/30 minutes. My usual. And my legs felt like lead, as usual too. I don't get it. I felt great at the race though.

Happy training! I'll try to keep up with ya'll posting, but I'm not making any promises.

Judy--feel better soon.

I wish I had a goal again now. Time to start planning!

Thanks everyone for the advice on the slower pace. :goodvibes

Maria, both DH and myself have a Nano ipod and got the Nike+ sport kit to go with it. (You don't have to have the special shoes for the sensor - you can order a shoe pouch.) We absolutely love it. It tells you your pace, distance, time, calories, etc. and speaks over your music.

Dana, that is very scary about the fires! I pray you stay safe.

Well, my skirtsport GymGirl came today and it is a tiny bit too small. Questionable, though. I ordered a different color in the next size up today and I'll just exchange the one that doesn't work. That way I have two skirts that I got on sale! :thumbsup2
I was hoping to wear it tomorrow, but alas I guess I'll be in my ride up shorts... It came pretty fast, though!

Sale ends today FYI.

Hi, all! Wow, this thread is already long for Monday!

Jen - Sorry to hear about DH's knee. My DH has had surgery on just about every body part, including the knee. His doctors love him!
Martha - Welcome to the crazies in the full! I wish I could offer advice but I'm a first-timer like you!
Jen - Welcome! It's a very friendly and supportive group!
Shan - Don't even think about pace. I've never worked on increasing mine, but it has just naturally happened. It will come!
Cam - Congrats on your 5K!
Mel - Scary moments with your DD! I still remember when I was about her age and fell into a pool. I think it's why I'm not a tri-athlete; I am just not a swimmer!

This weekend I was in OH for my grandma's 103rd birthday. While there I did my 8 mile run at about a 10 minute pace and felt pretty good. I didn't even get lost running in a strange town! Thanks goodness for gmap-pedometer. I love that site!

Happy running/walking, all!

Mel -- I am so glad WT is fine. Thank God you were right there. So, now your hair has gone grey, right? And your life expectancy has dropped about 10 years, right?

I took quite a few days off after the Minnie too. I needed it! Also, I signed up for the RFTT even before I left from WDW after doing the Minnie. I needed to have another goal to work towards. It really is motivating! Plus, I loved the races for the Minnie weekend, I really want to do more!

Mel - Thank God DD was ok! Unfortunately I know that feeling from Zack falling off the deck at the lake almost 2 years ago. He fell about 12 ft. onto rock! I really thought he was going to be dead. It really shakes you up for awhile.

Judy
- feel better! :wizard:

Maria
- is that the 5k in Boston you talked about awhile back? If so, can you send me the info? It's been over a week since Minnie & I have not done one shred of exercise. Unless eating counts as exercise. Needless to say, I need some motivation over here!

Off to the park for some 'xt' with Zack!

My WO today!
Ran on the dreadmill (for someone who hates the dreadmill, I sure do spend lots of time on it:confused3 ). Anyway....did 5 in 40:20...8:04 MPM.:cool1: The run was fine with my Ipod...which I DO plan on wearing for my 5k this weekend...so much for never running a race with music.:lmao:

DD update - She is fine today...still a little swollen in the eyes...today at school, they found a TICK on her. It was so small...like the size of a pin head....I have the dead tick JIC she has a reaction to it...but the nurse said yesterday had nothing to do with the tick.

Mel - Oh NO! How scarry....I am so glad you were there to rescue her.

Judy - Hope you feel better.

HM - WTG on the run! Great pace.:yay: WOW...103!:)

Shan - BUMMER! Oh I hope mine comes in soon. I got the Marathongirl...I hope I like it. How long did it take to get yours.

Dana - That fire is to close for comfort! Glad it was taken care of...WTG on your run. With that pace, you may go sub 4..... Dream BIG!

Martha - I agree with everyone...I never think about the miles...just one step at a time....:rotfl: about Craig!

No running today, my back is bothering me. So I went on a 35 minute bike ride, switching off hauling the girls with me. I will attempt some balance ball in a bit.

Mel - That goodness DD is OK! I am glad you saw it happen! My DD had a swimming class mishap at age 3.5. She had a very inattentive teacher who didn't see her go under... the life guard wasn't watching either. Of course I screamed and they got her... but it scared her for 2 years. She is just now getting better at swimming. I don't mean to scare you, but I am glad you are getting swim lessons for her. I think it is very important to know how to swim.

Martha - OK, now how did you get your little pic on your signature!!! Glad you figured it out!

Dana - Stay safe with those fires!!!!

Kevin

I missed your return last week, so a welcome back from me. Congratulations on getting through the term.

Bill

I have to admit I don't have it that hard when I grade. There is a lot of volume but most of my questions are quantitative, and the answer is right or wrong. I do look for consistency past errors to only penalize them once, but they either have the right or wrong solution. I cannot imagine grading 100 long strategy papers. When I give them short answers or explanations I severely restrict their word limit so I don't end up reading the complete works of William Shakespeare.

Mel

Nothing like a relaxing sit around the pool on Mothers Day, eh? Who was breathing harder when you pulled your daughter out of the water, you or her?

Colleen

The fact that all your posts involve food or drink is a reflection of your advanced level of civilization. Life is too short to drink bad wine and eat bad food. We look forward to seeing you here during the 2008 Boston Marathon weekend. FWIW I saw one of my ex-students in the fitness center a couple of weeks after the marathon and she told me she had run Boston. She's a junior now, sweet, a little soft, mostly a tennis player, but I knew she did run in high school in Dallas because we sometimes talked about running spots in Dallas, the best being White Rock Lake. I expected her to tell me she really struggled in the hills but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, she finished in 3:45.

Shan

Hitting a pace plateau happens to all of us. To break that barrier you need to do some speed work. This can be done on hills, on the track, with fartleks, or other methods, but to run faster you need to run faster. Speed work trains your body to run at a quicker pace and, most importantly, run relaxed at that quicker pace. I was highly skeptical of this years ago, and found out it works. You don't need the speed work often, perhaps once a week or every 2 weeks, but running fast in training for short intervals has an amazing effect.

Good luck all

Craig

Christa - Chad found a tick on him Friday, just like the one you found on your DD. I am paranoid about him checking for the bullseye - my Mom got Lyme disease a couple years ago and it ain't fun! I keep forgetting to go buy the tick repelent stuff.

Craig, glad your teaching semester is coming to a close. Enjoy the weekend with your baby’s graduation.

Scuba Jim, those were great pics of the Muddy Buddy.

Christa, hope DD is ok. That must be scary.

Kristi, I love your medals rod. I’m glad Wendy shared her trophies with all of us too.

Angie, I am so sorry to hear of the back problem. My PD that you find some relief.

Carrie, hope your XT this week goes well. Maybe it is best to wait until you get those orthotics before pushing it too much.

PatsFan Jen, Welcome to the WISH Team! You will love it here.

Judy, get well.

Cam, you got home so late and still did your crunches and pushups. You are amazing!

Martha, I am so excited for you and your joining in the fun of the full! Be careful in training so you don’t over train and get injuries. Take time to enjoy.

Maria, glad you’re back. I have an IPod Nano and love it. You have to work with loading Itunes, but for me, well I like it.

Dana, I guess we’ve gotta do the rain dance for everyone there. Those pictures are scary.

Vicki, glad you’re back into things.

Stephanie, a mother-daughter spa thing. Oh the sacrifice!

HMHunters, wow! Grandma is 103! What a blessing.

Craig said fartlek! Tee hee!

My park is the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It is about 10 mins away if I get caught by the traffic light. It is part of the Ohio Erie Canal and Underground Railroad. Training in the park with my camera and taking pics prepares me for the January event. I’m always with my running “tool belt.”

I had my endoscopay and dilatation procedure today as outpatient so I was off today (for real). Finally not feeling loopy and it’s bed time. Oh well, I think I need sleep.
