Wk of Aug 20--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

:offtopic: :furious: I am NOT happy! We will be at WDW in 16 days. We have been looking forward to this trip for a year and a half. And JUST NOW I find out MY FAVORITE RIDE is CLOSED for rehab!! The Land boat ride will be closed the week we are there. We didn't go on it last time because the line was too long. I was so looking forward to it this time! I know it's a slow, hokey ride, but it's my favorite. WAAAAAAAAAHHHH!

Hissy fit over. :rolleyes2

OK well, obviously I missed the chat last night. So, were you all talking about me?? :rolleyes1 Wednesday night is out out-to-dinner then food shopping night.

Heather - Thanks for your suggestions on eating and drinking during a LR/W. Last night I got a Snickers Marathon bar, and I'll try it out this weekend. I'll just start trying things in different combinations. You might see me on the course eating an eggplant parm wedge! :lmao:

Carrie - Thanks for the explanation. I figured it was Pooh by your picture. BTW is that you with the arms up? :teeth:

Kevin - Ohh with names like Raspberry Cream I think I might have to try out those gels! OK I'm sure they sound better then they taste. Do they make one in Chunky Monkey? :lmao: Wow, thanks for asking the Sports Physiologist my question. Ah ha! I KNEW there had to be a reason. Hmmmm...what to do? What to do? I'm really fine running five minute intervals, but I definitely see the point of running faster, smaller intervals. I'll try some sessions with tiny intervals and see how it goes. Maybe for now I'll alternate each session and see which one I like better. Thanks very much, Kevin! And I feel very special today as I got TWO mentions in your post.

Pungodingy - Look at what you did! :thumbsup2 A mile!! You should be very proud!! Remember not to increase anymore then 10% at a time.

Mel - Oh geez! A Marathon bar and a Diet Pepsi? :faint: I think I'll stick with gels and bars and water. And maybe a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Yes, I think I will play around with the intervals a bit, as you and Kevin suggested. I still have a couple of weeks to figure things out.

Paul - Oh wow! Congratulations!

Rachael
- Ohh, what a good idea! Little bribes.....Yes..... ::yes::

Terri - AHHH! No no! :scared: No eating horses please! Ohh, PB&J at 2:30am. Maybe I'll stick one in my waist pack. :rotfl2: I'm actually just kidding about this...and the eggplant parm...kinda..

Dana - Ohh! :yay: Your so lucky! How very exciting for you though. I've never been to DL. I think next year we will go.

Jodi - You work in Norwalk? I live in South Salem. Geez, you are so close. :wave2: Yes let's exchange cell numbers so we can meet somewhere. This will be my first "official" race (I did a Memorial Day 5K but I wasn't registered. It's a long story.) and I'll be wearing my WISH shirt for the first time. Just to try it out, then it goes back in the drawer until January. Well, after I wash it of course.

Kristi - Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about Chad's sister. How very sad. I wish everyone the best. :grouphug: Lifetime? That's wonderful! I'm extremely envious. I've been going to meetings for eight weeks now, with pretty much nothing to show for it. It's my own fault though.

Cam - I just last night got your voicemail! :goodvibes There is something wrong with my cell phone. I thought it was the battery but I kept forgetting to charge it. I don't use it that much. Then when I finally did remember to charge it, that doesn't seem to be the issue. But anyway, I thought I better check my messages since I hadn't in so long and there you were! :yay: My only message in like two weeks! So sad...anyway I was THRILLED it was you! What a sweet sweet message! I inspired you??? I can't believe it! Ohhhhh...I'm not all that. But thank you for the message. That was sooo nice. :flower3:

Anybody seen Helen lately? :confused3

Okay -- I posted this earlier and it disappeared, but luckily I had it in word processing, so I am trying it again:

Kathy – Thank you for asking about Jenn. Move in went great and after some computer glitches we think we have her completely set up. Geez, I had really forgotten how small college dorm rooms are. Please give Erin a hug for me. I still remember what a sweetie she was helping me look for a grad pin for DD at DTD. Tell her I am hoping Jenn turns out just like her and Lynne.

Sorry I missed chat last night – we were doing the move-in thing and it took so much longer than I expected. By 10 we still hadn’t had dinner, so we went to Friendly’s where I self-medicated with a turkey club wrap, fries & a small sundae – how much do my WISH friends love me? Will someone roll me around the DL ½ course? ;)

Krista – Thanks for asking how I am doing. To tell the truth, I’m not sure. I am spending so much time worrying about her and thinking of what she might need or how I can make her life easier that I think I haven’t really adjusted to the one-less-child-to-mother-at-home situation. We’ll see DS tomorrow and bring him home on Sunday, so that is really keeping me “up” right now.

Last night was the first time in her life that DDturning18nextweek ever slept away from home in a room by herself. It was very strange for me to realize that and still walk out of that dorm. We found a stuffed brindle colored cairn terrier who looks exactly like DD’s beloved Cali and gave it to her last night.

No training for me this week, though I did 30 minutes on the crosstrainer the other night. I am supposed to do 10 miles this weekend but we’ll be in the Catskills at DS’s camp, so not sure how to make that work. I may actually settle for getting in 10 miles total in 2 pieces if I can’t carve out a block of time for the LW.

Paul – Congrats to you and DD and best wishes for all good things during this very exciting time. :goodvibes

Sunny – sending you best wishes, sweetie! Oh, and I showed my WISH training journal to a friend this morning who thought it was the coolest thing and loved your design. Then I showed her the “26.2 is life-changing” apron and she LOVED it. Everywhere I look, I see your stuff and it makes me think of you and I say a prayer for you for quick healing.

Kristi – Congratulations on Lifetime, sweetie! You look awesome, too! So sorry about your SIL. That is so sad. I will keep her in my prayers.

Krista – I really hope you figure out why your leg is hurting. I am sorry I have no advice to offer, just hugs and pixiedust: and :goodvibes: Take care of yourself!

Dave – I would NOT tell DFIL your plans! I cannot tell you how many times my opportunity to surprise someone got “trumped” when someone else slipped up and spilled the beans. Really – the fewer people who know the better.

Okay, I have to get back to work. I have been so tied up on a really, really stressful matter at work that was favorably resolved yesterday, so I am breathing a bit easier but now have to catch up.

Talk to you all soon. :grouphug:

BTW -- Judy -- So glad you got the message. Can you inspire me some more, please? Or just kick my butt, okay? Life is overwhelming me and I have been so stressed and sad about DD and missing DS and welll, no excuses . . . gotta get back on the ball.

Oh, and Helen posted from the airport in the wee hours of yesterday morning, heading to England to visit her Mum, I think, before heading to sunny California!

Judy - You should have heard what we said about you last night. ;) Yes, that's me with my arms up and dh in WISH green next to me. As dead as I was, cameras and firends cheering always gave me a spark. Yes, I am an attention monger. :D

Cam - Glad things went ok with dd. :grouphug:

Wow, this place moves way too fast! Must be time to get serious!

Hi WISH Team!

Paul, I WISH you DW and family the happiest of times as you go through this upcoming blessed event! Contratulations!

Cam, been thinking of you Howard and young ones as you are all growing. PD that it all transitions smoothly. Good luck getting in those steps.

Kristi, sorry to hear of SIL. Hoping she will know family will be there for her and that se can reach out. Congrats to you on your WW Lifetime achievement!

Sunny, WISHing you everything you need to move through this crud you've got going.

Kathy, hope you are able to make that decision b4 the event fills. PD to you.

Dave, based on Cam's response about FIL, I guess I haven't experienced anything as this and should just WISH you PD to get to the announcement in your time, in your way.

Krista, I don't know what would cause that kind of pain you are having. I WISH that you will figure it out soon. Don't want it to be where injury comes in b/c of it. Sorry about the biking discomfort. Great XT though.

Judy, no we wouldn't talk of those who weren't in chat. No we wouldn't, really! Great questions you are asking. It helps me to rethink what I am doing. Sorry that your fav ride will be closed on this trip. Just guess you'll have to organize a WISH Team Trip in January to ride with you b4 the dessert party!
:teeth:
Pungodingy, :yay: :yay: Woot! woot! One mile down and only a few more to go! You are doing it! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Keep up the good work and don't overdo your increases.

Dana, congrats on the get-away! That is exciting. I know you will enjoy that.

Rachel, I think your little bribes are a great way to get your mind in the spirit!

Matt, I hope this one goes way smoother for you too. Sounds like you've got it figured.

MelR, I bet your food treat last night was good!

Carrie, sorry you're sore today. You and me for Saturday. With the group I'm in steppin' off at 6:15 a.m. Quite early indeed as I travel b4 sun's up, but it is spectacular at that hour for me.

Thanks for all the help and advice will try the gels this weekend and let you all know Sunday. Just a thought i started running to win a park race at WDW and lost over 100 pounds. Just remember no matter how hard it is to get up and do it remember your goal and as Nike says Just Do It. I can't look myself in the mirror if i don't go for my run Daily. If i feel poor i just run less but i still run. This board is great i wish i had the support and info when i first started.
Well said! I WISH you would have found us sooner too, but I'm sure glad you're here now!

I think for me I will be training something similar to what will be offered along the way at WDW. I did good that way last January. Mile 4 something gel-like. I take 1/2 then the other 1/2 a bit later maybe 2 miles or so. All with water. Then between I have some sort of ade watered down. I can't stomach full strength. I have noticed that it does make a difference in my ability to sustain the distance. Amazing to me.

Oh yes, I must say...you all in chat last night. You're still killing me. All I am thinking of is food now!
:sunny:

That's about as much as I can recall now. Have a great training day everyone.

Oh, darn it, I missed the food discussion! :confused3 Sorry I got there late. I am happy I tried logging in and actually participated in my first group chat. It was kind of hard following the different conversations going on. I will stay longer next time.

I purchased a new Rodney Yee yoga DVD today, I am very excited to use it. I already have one of his and I really like the stretching in it. I just don't do enough.

My training plan calls for 8 miles tomorrow, because it is a fall back week, but 16 next Friday. I have been getting up early and have really enjoyed running in the dark. :thumbsup2 We will see what happens tomorrow morning at 4:30?? :confused3

Mel- I am intrigued by your success at running for longer intervals. I did W3/R2 last year at the 1/2. I have been training at R3/W2 but continue to be frustrated by my slower pace. I may try intervals over 10 minutes rather than 5 minutes. Based on my current pace, I may try R6/W4 or R5/W5. I don't want to change too much before DL 1/2, but a few test runs may be a good idea. I will be very careful to avoid injury with a little over 3 weeks left before the race.

It is interesting to me how many levels training for these events can take on. For example, there is the goal of becoming an athlete after years of being a couch potato (or casual exerciser) (which I achieved through the help of the WISH team in 2004-05). There is the goal of becoming a runner after years of thinking that I could never become a runner (too slow, not enough stamina, too difficult) (which I have yet to achieve but am striving to get to, thus the determination to run more than walk in my intervals). There is the goal of achieving major milestones like completing a half-marathon (which I achieved through the help of the WISH team in 2005 & 2006 and will achieve at DL in Sept.) and completing a full marathon (which I will do in Jan. 2007 through the help of the WISH team).

So while my training has been spotty because of work and my weight may be higher than I like, I will rise at 3:00 a.m. on September 17th and head for the start line at the DL 1/2 and I will have the courage to start and the toughness to finish and I will have my WISH friends there to support me along my journey. :grouphug:

Paul: Congratulations to you and your wife!!!! That's wonderful that she can still do DL.

What a buffoon I am. I just realized I forgot to post my training this morning. Geez.

I did 45 min @ 1%:
10 @ 3.8 w
5 @ 4.0 w
10 @ 3.8 w
5 @ 4.5 r
10 @ 3.8
5 @ 5 r

We are going to be in Newport this weekend for a dive trip so I'm going to do my L/W-R somewhere there Sunday morning. Charlie doesn't know it yet but he's doing it with me. :teeth:

Jodi - I just mailed in my Bigelow application! YAY! :cheer2:

I did over 6 miles on Sunday and had planned to do the same today, but I went to a water park yesterday and my legs are killing me. Man, walking up those stairs, to the slides, were rough and talk about getting a wedgy. Yikes! :lmao: I'm taking today off, but plan to hit the gym tomorrow.

Thanks guys for all the good thoughts & prayers for my SIL! :goodvibes

Judy
- it took me almost 2 years to lose this 30 lbs. on weight watchers. And, I finally got a doctor's note that says my current weight is a healthy weight for me - I never got to WW goal (still want to get there though). Don't be too hard on yourself & give yourself some time, ok?

Heather - your post was awesome! I'll be with you at DL - having the courage to start & the toughness to finish (love that!) with you.

Carrie - I am such a butthead! I always wondered what your DIS name meant. Doh! And to think I worked 11 years at TDS where we always abbreviated Pooh as "wtp."

Just got back from a 5 miler. Well, a 5.46 miler since I misjudged my route by not doing an exact out & back. Oh well! I had some Power Gel before I left the house since I hadn't eaten lunch. It wore off after mile 3, because boy did I start to crash! Anywho, here we go:
13:19
13:01
12:51
13:16
12:54
1:05:24 (then another 7:08 walking the .46 back home  )

I cut 2+ mins. off my 5 mile time from Tuesday! I think it was my WISH socks, bracelet & my new light lime green tank from Target. The tank has a neat little zipper pocket in the left side seam - fits my cell phone perfectly.

I'm five pages behind.... :sad2:

I need some help....
Last year I registered for the Chicago Marathon. I have not been training and there is NO WAY I can complete it....what should I do? Should I start and drop out at the half, not start, or something else? I've never done a race and not finished....so I have no idea what to do. I appreciate any suggestions anyone could offer!!

Hey everyone! Between DDs school, work, training, and blah, blah, blah..I have to do,,,,,I don't have time to read and post! So this is a drive by!

Melissa - LOVE the Tri pics! That is a great idea!

Lynne - Please don't be disappointed...you did AWESOME!

Paul - Congrats...but I missed the post telling what for! :confused3

Sunny - Hope the PT works...I am praying for you!

Welcome new people!

Mon: I trail ran with JRT 3 miles then swam 1 mile
Tues: I biked around 10 miles then ran a tradmil 5k @ an 8:30 pace...PAIN in the calf that 1st mile!
Wed: I ran 4 miles btwn 9 to 8 MPM then swam 1 mile
Thurs: My butt hurts so I took the day off (from exercise)

Thats about all!
Got some Zantac to the heart burn and will take it b/4 the run tomorrow!
Going to bed now at 8:30 b/c I am tired!
Later! Hope to catch up with everyone soon!

Well today's training has been cancelled due to rain. It is raining enough to make it a little hazardous being outside right now. So this run has become a rest break. I might go out for a little walk tomorrow and then the long run on Saturday.

The chat was fun last night. Now if I can just remember from week to week.

Kristi - Good job on the better time. Maybe we can market all the WISH items and say they improve all the times.

Matt -- I think you have the lowest number I have seen. With WDW the lower the number, the better the corral placement. I would presume that DL will be the same.

Judy - It's a shame your favorite ride will be closed but now you have an excuse to come back sooner. Good job on your training.

Cam - As for rolling you around, I remember seeing someone in a wheelchair last year at the marathon that had a sign on the back that said something like "Can you please push me for the next mile?" I am sure that enough of us here can do it for a mile or so. :teeth:

Colleen - I have to get up that early to run as well on Saturday's. I think the pull of the bed is becoming stronger though. I find it is a little nicer to run in the dark as well. That is until I come up behind some walker and they get surprised and try to knock me out.

Paul - Congrats

Monte - Just count it as cross training, stair climbers used to be popular a few years back.

Dana -- Look forward to seeing you at DL, hope you can make it to the gathering.

Dave - Good luck on the race tonight. We also enjoy going to the minor league games around here but unfortunately they usually get out too late for DS.

I'm just so excited that I had to post and tell you guys my good news. I did my 5 miler today and NO PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so HAPPY!!  I did r4/w1 and slowed my pace down to 10:54/12:45, so I was doing a 11:30 mile and finished in 56:20. Before, I was running about a 10:50 mile, don't know if that was the culprit or not, but I'm happy to be pain free. So I have officially completed my first long run of marathon training. :cheer2: :cheer2:

Kristi--Great job on your 5 miles and :cheer2: for making WW Lifetime. That's awesome. You know, I have that same shirt from Target and I love it. I have the black shorts that are trimmed in the same shade of green and they are SO comfy. Every time I run in them, I have a terrific run.

Celeste--Is it a full or half marathon? When is it? Personally, I would go and try my best and if I finish great and if not, that's okay too. Did not finish greatly trumps did not start, as long as you take the race at your pace to prevent injury. Hope that helps.

Bill--Send some of that rain up to southern Ohio, we need rain SO badly. It's only rained once in the past 6 weeks, everyone's grass is so brown and burnt up.

Hello all. This is my first post, although I've been living vicariously through you all for a while -- lurking on these boards. :wave2:

You've all inspired me and so I have recently committed myself to a fitness program, running in particular, and I've registered for the WDW Half in January. I've also registered for a 5K on Sept 13th with a number of co-workers. That will be my first race ever.

I've run off and on for the last year, but only recently have seen results. Prior to the last month I would push myself too hard, get hurt, and burn out -- only getting up to running a few minutes at a time. I then found and read "Courage to Start" and my approach changed. I've now run for a little more than 30 minutes straight for the first time in my life. I got there by starting out walking and slowly incorporating running. I then jumped from r10,w2,r10 to r30 and I've been there for my last four runs. (Some days are certainly easier than others!)

I'm thinking about running/walking the WDW Half as I don't want to repeat my mistake of pushing myself too hard or aiming too high and then not achieving my goal (of participating at all).

I have a question though: In MfM the training program for running/walking is 14 weeks long and seems to start off pretty easy from where I am at now, i.e. able to run for 3 miles in about 37 minutes. I'm wondering if I should go back to running/walking and really start at 30 minutes of r3/w2 with 2 miles for the LR (or whatever the initial week calls for, unfortunately I'm at the office and don't have the book with me) instead of thinking that I'm more "advanced" and starting with a later week? Anyone have any experience with this or sage advice for a beginner?

Thank in advance for any help and advice!

Best regards,

chris :surfweb:

OMG - they have matching shorts?! Every time I am in Target, I look for that tank in other colors, and for matching shorts. They always have either black or dark gray ones hanging with them. None with green trim! I wear the top with my plain black shorts. I feel a stop at Target coming on... ;) Great job on your 5 miler, by the way! :cheer2:

Chris
- :welcome:

Krista- It is a full marathon. I have never done a full marathon, but have finished three halves. I don't do them very fast, since I am a walker and never really have the time to train properly. It is in October....any more suggestions? Glad you didn't have pain on your run today! :thumbsup2

Chris- Welcome!! I have been lurking for the past few months too! Good luck on your upcoming races!

Hi everyone! Just checking in for accountability. :thumbsup2

Paul - congratulations!!!!!! :goodvibes

Judy - You should take the backstage tour of the Land if you haven't already. It's pretty interesting. Maybe this would make up for them closing your favorite attraction. :teeth:

Kristi - I'm so sorry about your SIL. Sounds like she is really hurting right now.

Chris and Celeste - I've been a long time lurker too! I've just now really started training to train for the half in January. It will be an uphill battle for me but it really gives me something to look forward to.

Well, I took the day off. After working out every day for the past six days, I just didn't have the energy to do much today...other than work on school stuff (I teach at a local college). Tomorrow, I'm supposed to work on strength training with my trainer and next week I will start incorporating running into my routine. Hopefully, it will go well.

Now, about these gels. DH does a lot of road biking (if that's what you call it) and he uses the gels along with a powerade type of drink. A few of you mentioned that you should not do these together. Why? Doesn't one provide carbs and the other provide electrolytes? I guess I don't know much about these .... yet. :teeth:

Celeste - if you're already signed up, then go for it! I finished the WDW full this year and was severely underprepared (due to injury). But I ran when I could and walked most of it and finished (love that mickey medal :goodvibes ). Do your best and whatever happens, so be it. You might surprise yourself!

Chris - Welcome to the group!

Heather - That's us Dis-ers courageous and tough!

Cam - Glad DD got settled in. How's Howard doing?

Kristi - sending :wizard: to you and Chad. Hope sil is ok.

Krista and Dave - That's ok, gang up on me. I can take it. Fly, Eagles fly!!! :teeth:

Well, I missed chat again. I'm gonna have to make a big sign for myself for next week.
I've still been a slug and think I need somebody to give me a swift kick in the you-know-what. Between work having some major drama this week and my Mom having medical issues I have been mentally drained and so not motivated to train. This is not good with DL just a few weeks away :guilty: I'm hoping to get back on track this weekend. I have nothing planned other than to work out and catch up on the housework. (I hope!)
