Hey everyone:) So I'd had on my list of 'life goals' for about 10 years to run a 10k. I did it in May but I didn't train much for it and know I could have done better than I did. I did find the running to be somewhat addictive, though, and have now decided to work away at it with a goal of half-marathon by this fall or next spring and hoping to do Disney Marathon in 2011. I wnat to train to have good 10K times/half times for corral. I'm working away at my training, doing a 10K at least 3x a week and slowly improving times/distances.

I am a pronator (sp?). I always found Adidas shoes to be best for my pronating. Got a new pair at the end of April but they didn't have as good support in the arch as I need. Then I got some orthotics for them, but I find those rub against my foot and I get big blisters. At the end of my 10, my legs and lungs feel good, it's my feet that are killling me. Any suggestions for brands/styles of footwear or ways to keep these orthotics from digging in to my feet when I run? Thanks!

Oh, and glad to find other Disney runners. Looking forward to hearing about all your runs in the Most Magical Place on Earth.

Do you have running socks? Those might help - I use to run in cotton socks and when I switched to wool socks, they made a world of difference. I've never had orthotics before so I'm not sure if the socks would make a difference in that case.

As for shoes, I wear stability shoes. I use to run in Asics Kayanos - they were great but I had problems because the toe box wasn't high enough. I switched to New Balance 769 and they've been great! You could also bring your shoes and orthotics in to a PT or chiro and have them look at the way you're running so they can make suggestions.

I pronate, and I have custom orthotics. I wear Mizuno Wave Inspires. Two suggestions:

1) Make sure that your running shoes are at LEAST a half size larger than what you usually wear, maybe more to allow for the orthotics. I wear an 8 or 8 1/2 in regular shoes, and my newest pair of Mizunos are 10's. (They were fitted by the Mizuno rep - we chose the size after I told him I'd lost 2 toenails after my last marathon.)

2) Go to a specialty running store, take the orthotics with you, and see what they suggest. They should watch you run, offer several pairs that will work, and most good stores will even let you try them for 30 days and still bring them back. If there's a Fleet Feet in your area, they're really good about their return policy.

Don't be afraid to keep trying - the shoes have to be right or the miles will get longer and longer! And now that you've discovered a new addiction, you need to be comfortable! ;)

I second Fleet Feet. I was at my chiro yesterday (he's a runner) and was talking to him. I am suffering with plantar fasciitis and he said to go to Fleet Feet for orthotics among various other things. I need new shoes but was honest that they're not in my budget right now -- I was going to go to a chain store and get them cheaper. I got the orthotics at Fleet Feet and am going back for shoes after next payday. They spent so much time making sure that the orthotics I got were the ones that fit my feet right that they've sold me on getting my shoes there. They never tried to push me to purchase more than I said I could when I got there and I was so impressed. I'd rather spend a little more on shoes through them and know they're the right ones.

I also recommend going to a local running specialty store in your area. I have a Fleet Feet around me that I love and recommend to everyone but it depends on what is in your area.

I have a neutral gait but use stiffer inserts than come with the shoe. I woudn't classify them as orthotics but I love the added arch support.

The socks do make a huge difference. I don't wear any cotton when I run but cotton socks might as well come with a blister included. I have the Nike blister proof socks, Wigwam, and Powersox. I like the thinner socks because they feel better to me but a lot of people like a more pillowy sock so I would suggest trying a couple of pairs and decide which you like better.

I will vote for a trip to Fleet Feet too-they are the best!:thumbsup2

As far as socks, definately no cotton, I like thinner sox, moisture wicking with the arch support band. Never a blister yet.

Shoes- I am an over pronator. I have always worn NB, any shoe in an 8D would work for me. But this time I chose the Saucony Omni Grid 7. Felt better than the NB. Asics was my #2 choice. When I go back to FF in July for new shoes, I may switch it up, will depend on whats new and different.

Good luck and welcome to the addiction of running!
