WISDOM TEETH... one side at a time w/ NO Gen. Anesthesia? How was YOURS done?

I had all four of mine out at the same time with a local. I don't handle general anesthesia well. It makes me very sick. I had very little pain and felt fine within a couple of hours.

I had mine taken out 3 years ago by our dentist. He gave me valium to take before I came to the office, gave me some more valium by mouth as I got there, gave me the nitrous and novacaine and in 30 min I was done. I had a TERRIBLE time after with dry sockets so much so that my dh refused to have his out.

3 months ago dh had to have his out. He went to an oral surgeon, they gave him I.V. Versed. He woke up in the middle and said ooowwwww so they had to give him a lot more versed to get him out of it enough to continue. He was groggy for a few hours but was fine to go to work on Monday. He had it done on a Friday and he did well with no dry sockets but then he was stitched.

I don't think I could have 2 taken out and then go back and have the others taken out especially if I had a terrible time with the first 2....I'd never want to go back. At least if you have them all out at the same time you only screw up 1 weekend or week instead of 2.

It was done by an oral surgeon. All four done at the same time. Only local was needed. I was THRILLED not to have to be put under. Recovery time was minimal and I was out and about later that day. Very little pain as well.

Just a question - is it that you are worried about your daughter having to "go to sleep?"
Yes, I guess that's it. I was thinking that he was speaking of General Anesthesia which can have complications and I was just thinking, why have Gen. anesthesia when you can be awake and just numbed up?

I also had one at a time removed (by choice) when I was 18 or 19. I had gone to an Oral Surgeon who wanted to give me Gen. Anesthesia and I just couldn't see going through that if I didn't need to. To this day, I have never had Gen. Anesthesia. The only surgery I've ever had was for Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and I had IV Sedation (which DID knock me out completely.....surprisingly to me).

I had mine out when I was 17, all 4 at once. I took a pill that made me sleepy, and then he used novicane. It really wasn't a big deal to be awake(but groggy), and my teeth were enormous (long and deep...) I still have them-I know-gross! heehee

Good luck. :)

I had all 4 of mine out at the same time and I was put under for the procedure. The dentist referred me to the oral surgeon because they were very impacted. When I woke up, the oral surgeon told me that in his 25+ years of practice mine was one of the 10 worst cases of impaction he had ever seen. I was glad he didn't tell me how bad my impaction was before hand or I may have skipped it. My wisdom teeth were so impacted that my 12 year molars never came out either and I had some of those extracted later as well. My mouth was sore for about a week. But it really hurt for a few days. I recall having my food put through the blender the first two days or so after the procedure.
