Impacted just means that they are in the bone and under the gum line.

Then I have 3 impacted and one that is sort of out. and a small jaw - this is gonna hurt, I just have a feeling.

Actually an impacted wisdom tooth could be either in the bone (bony impaction) or in gum tissue (soft tissue impaction). The term "impaction" refers to the direction the tooth is growing.

I probably had the best possible experience you can have. Was 20, went to an oral surgeon & was knocked out. Next thing I know, I'm up, and everything was hysterical-you'll definately need a driver. Later I went to a bar with friends, drank my Bartels & James (yes, I'm that old) with a straw (that the bartender kept giving me for free out of sympathy cause I looked like Popeye). Was at work the next day. No problems at all, and a bottle of codine to use later for real woman pain.

My DD's oral surgeon said the longer you wait the worse it CAN be. (Note I didn't say WILL be!) The roots seem to continue to grow and especially the uppers can be difficult since they sometimes grow quite close to the sinus. He was concerned about one of DD's since she's a singer. The x-ray made it look like it might be a problem, but we got lucky. Don't put it off. Get them out, asap.

Yep, this is what DD's oral surgeon explain. Since she was only 16, we were lucky that the roots had not gotten very long. My friend had it done and her roots had gone up to the sinus cavity. She said it was not a good thing!

I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed last month at the age of 35. I was TERRIFIED of the general anesthesia and the possibility of dry socket. The GA was a breeze. The procedure took about 40 minutes. All four teeth had erupted the gums, but weren't completely exposed and were leaning towards the tooth beside.

I am still nursing my 9 month old son, so pain meds were limited. I took RX strength Aleve and was fine. I ate many Frosty's from Wendy's with a spoon. I was eating "real" food about 5 days later. I probably could have done it sooner, but was afraid.

The bleeding lasted for over 24 hour. That was a surprise to me, but is normal. I used ice constantly for the first 24 hours, and had very little swelling. I tied the ice packs on with a scarf so I wouldn't have to hold them.

For me, the anxiety was much worse than the actual procedure. Best wishes to you.

My 2 lowers were impacted, so I was knocked out for that. They put in the IV, I started seeing double & went right out. I was really groggy the rest of the day, but didn't have much pain or any swelling. The worst part was the medication they gave me - Vicodin! Made me so sick. So I just took Tylenol instead.

A few years later, the top 2 were fully grown in, so I decided to just have them pulled (by the same oral surgeon). He just gave me a local (probably novocaine), then yank-yank, and I was done. It kinda felt like my head was going to come off, but they came out fairly quickly. I liked that it went so quick.

Just follow the directions to avoid dry socket and you should be fine.

I am going through the same thing. I have my consult with the oral surgeon on Jan. 3 and my appt. is scheduled for Feb. 14th. I have to have my wisdom teeth out and 2 others because of damage from the wisdom tooth pushing on it for so long. I should have been braver a long time ago. I am 39 and dread the dentist and am now paying for it.

I had mine out at the ripe old age of 39. Did fine except for vomiting(one time) after I got home. Im sure it was because of the anesthesia.

When DS had his out all 4 were impacted so he was put to sleep. He is an extreme BMX bike rider and he was out on his bike the next day. He ended up with 2 dry sockets, but did not even realize it until he went back to the dentist. He never took any pain meds. DD (18) just had her out last month, she has a health condition so hers had to be done as an inpatient in the hospital. She ended up spending 4 days in intensive care. She did not complain much about the pain though. She had her tonsils out in May and said the pain from that was A LOT worse.

Had mine out at age 30, didn't feel a thing. Very little swelling & pain, I just took advil. He had to dig 1 tooth out of my cheek area, so there were stitches. Now my dentist on the other hand, has been trying to figure out, whats up with 1 of my molars (sensitive). He uses ice cubes, heat, pressure etc. I come up right out of the chair, & now I'm terrified to go see him again.

I have had teeth pulled (for braces) and refused to "go under". I didn't feel a thing with local anesthetic and had no pain afterward.
I prefer to be wide awake, saved a ton of money too.

Don't think about it. When the date arrives, go. Why make yourself a wreak over it until then? It won't change a thing.

I had mine out when I was in my 20's and it was the worst pain I ever experienced (my c- section was a breeze compared to the wisdom teeth). I am not a dental phob or anything, heck I fell asleep during a root canal because I think those are a piece of cake and don't hurt at all but I would never tell anyone ever to do all 4 at once. I was knocked out for it (they were bonily impacted) but once I woke up I was miserable for a long time. I couldn't go to work for 2 weeks, I couldn't open my mouth enough for anything other than to pour some liquid off a spoon into my mouth for weeks and it took months before it was back to normal. I hate pain pills and never took one after my c setoin or another surgery I had but with the wisdom teeth I took them for quite a while.

check the criminal record of your dentist, my biggest fear is with me out of it on drugs, and my mouth pried open, that I join the other team and didnt know it
