I'm an IT guy so no but we have our router in our Owner's locker and it's preconfigured so we just plug it in and bam, I'm on. This next trip I'm going to bring an Aironet and see if I can get a signal out at the Kidani pool :)

Thanks.

I'm a former IT guy so hoping it all comes back to me! :rotfl:

Don't have it preconfigured though. Plan was to leave it in our locker as well.

I set ours up at home first. So I'm hoping all we have to do is plug and play! I'll know in two months!

I've used a small travel router at OKW before. No problems getting ot going and nive to sit on the patio for email! I did set it up before going and I would guess if you don't set it up for a static address on the WAN side it should do OK.

I have an AirCard and that is the ultimate, imo! I would recommend this for any "techie" or "gadget guru". I mean our blackberries and mobile devices are nice and those who have them live and die by them but there is nothing like having your laptop with internet anywhere/everywhere you go!!! I've used it at wdw resorts, other resorts, cruises and will be taking it along on my business trip next week to Las Vegas and then over to California.

If you have to work, that is the way to do it; poolside with an ice cold one soaking in the sun. I also plan on logging in from the middle of the death valley, just because, well ... I can! But, I will say, just to warn you, that once you start using these there will be no going back to anything but as the freedom of unrestricted access from unrestricted locations is the ultimate for any technie/gadget guru !!!

How much do those aircards run a month? If your business pays for it, yep the way to go. But aircard service and internet service would be a steep monthly bill I bet!

My company does pay for it but the cost is slightly higher than a standard cable/fiber connection. The cost is $59.00 a month and the card itself is free.

I'm definitely not an IT guy and was able to get our wireless router working with my Macbook at BWV.

I have a Macbook. I was wondering what I would need to make a wireless connection in my room at SSR? What do I need and what is the cheapest way out? I am very limited in internet knowledge. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks :surfweb::confused3

Where is the connection in the 2BR at SSR?

You need a wireless router. I have an Airport Express that cost about $80; you can purchase a wireless router for as cheap as $26 on Amazon. There is no need to set it up before hand unless you want to have wireless security. I leave my iBook G4 in my Owner's Locker, and keep nothing requiring security on it, so I leave my wireless router unsecured and allow any of my non-dvc neighbors a crack at free wireless.

Just got back from VWL and had no problem with my router. It would have been better had I had my newer router, but, it worked fine. Just make sure you have your security settings set to max.

OK, non-tech person so don't laugh at the question. We have a router configured and secure for use at home. Can I just bring it with me and hook it up or are there other things that need to be done? My browser has a Disney profile on it that works when I use the cable. Will I be able to plug in a few wires and it will work or will I get totally frustrated and throw everything over the balcony?

Thanks I guess I will look for a middle of the road. Thanks for all your help

I wonder why SSR doesn't install wireless repeaters at the pool. It wouldn't cost that much.

hooked it up a little while ago and sitting on the balcony looking at DTD!

Worked easily. Basically plugged it in, set password and went.

THanks everyone

Most routers/Access points should just work if you plug them in. The Apple Airport Express (which I and others have advocated) will complain about double NAT when you hook them up (as I recall you don't get a real IP address you get a RFC-1918 address.)

But the express is a great for travel, it's light it has no external antennas or anything to break (even the power prongs fold down into the unit.) It looks like a wall-wort/power supply, with 4 ports on it (ethernet, audio, USB, and 120/220 power.)

If you are taking your home unit, you should "backup" the unit before you leave. You might have to change some of the settings and it will be easier to replace them if you backup what you have.

Between my wife and I we normally have 4 or 5 wireless devices (between laptops, PDAs, and smartphones.) And I know I've told this story before, at Halloween, we had about 5 laptops, 1 PDA, 4 smartphones, and 3 handheld games sharing our connection. Because with wireless they wouldn't have anyway to verify who was using the wireless.

Remember Disney still charges for internet access. DVC has cut some other deal so when we are staying on points, it's free. You still have to click on the "I agree to allowing this to be charged to my room" and it's just not charged if you stay on points.

Yes they could do something complicated like have you get PIN code from your room and type it into your browser to allow access, but something tells me that would be more problems than just not offering wireless access.
