wireless internet

I know there is an internet kit you can rent/borrow while you're at the Fort. IWe are staying in a preferred site. Couple questions...
1. I am wondering if there is wireless internet available.
2. I understand there is a charge per day to use it. What if we use the internet on Monday and not again until Thursday. Would that be two charges (Mon and Thurs) or four (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs)?

1) There is wireless available, but that is pay use as well. I think you buy a 24 hour package, which costs pretty much the same as the wired internet.

2) That's actually a good question. When we got it once we had it for the entire trip but rarely used it, so it was kind of a waste of money. I know that you have to "login" to use it, so I would assume if you didn't login on a certain day you wouldn't be charged. I don't remember it being a length of stay kind of thing, but I could be wrong.

Once you login, you have that access for 24 hrs. for 9.99. Once that is up, you'd have to pay the 9.99 again for your next 24 hrs. So if you log in tues, you would have it for 24 hrs from that moment of login til that same exact time wed. if you time it right, you can stretch it out....it all depends on how much time you plan on spending online vs. park touring.

When at the hotels, we would use internet every other day. Day 1, I would purchase it at say 10:30 pm, get my stuff done, then log off. Day 2, I would log on early in the morning, then again later that night but made sure I was done by 10:30pm.

I would skip the morning of day 3, and repurchase another 24 hours about 10:30 pm and repeat early morning and evening on day 4.

Repeated again on day 5/6.

So got to check email every day of a 6 day trip, but only paid for 3 24 hour blocks of internet time.

They also have free dial up internet service at the outpost if you need to get connected everyday and dont want to have to pay for the cable service.

Internet is what allows many of us to go camping more often and is also what has made fulltiming more popular.

We can take a little more time off work if we can stay connected.

Fulltimers can take care of their bills and investments a lot easier due to the internet.

Yes, there are times when backcountry camping and leaving all the "stuff" at home is desired, but in order to have two full weeks at Ft. Wilderness every year, I have to take the internet with me to keep my job more sane when I get back!!

Yes, you have to pay for internet, and yes, for some people it is worth it. I personally don't find a use for it anymore, but I won't begrudge anyone for using it. Have fun

Have to agree...we need internet-not just to watch my e-mail from work, but to keep in touch with family members still at home. I know it's "vacation," but I don't like coming home to hundreds of e-mails when I can very simply check each night and delete the junk...it's not really working, just keeping in touch

If we are camping in a regular site (not preferred) you can get wireless internet inside your camper ????

Not yet, they have the wireless at the porch of Trails End. I have a Verizon Air Card that work provides me, that's the way I get internet at the Fort.

I disagree. I have to keep in touch with the DIS'ers. There is a lot of valuable information that is given by people who are actually at FW when they post. Besides, if the internet is part of your enjoyment, then it belongs in a vacation.

Camping used to be "roughin' it" and now people's motor coaches are nicer than their actual homes.

Yea, even if you are staying in a tent, this isn't exactly backwoods camping...lol.

I don't know of too many campsites deep in the Everglades or on the side of a mountain in Colorado that have marinas, arcades, bars, restaurants, golf carts, stores, movies, laundry, pools, playgrounds, I think you get the point...lol.

When people ask me if I camp, I tell them I don't so much "camp"... I "RV".

My idea of roughing it is... ah well... I have no idea... it simply ain't gonna happen!
