Any one using MIFI at your site while at the fort? Thinking about getting it to keep in touch with family and if needed to send emails to others (not Work)!!!!!!:confused3

I give up!! What is MIFI???

During our 2009 stay at the Fort we went ahead & rented the cable modem kit from the front desk ($125 refundable deposit) and paid the $9.95/24 hours fee for internet. This was much easier than going to the WiFi spots in the Fort and still paying $9.95/24 hours.

We now have a netbook thru Verizon Wireless. It's $36 + tax/month for 250k usage. My DH uses it for business, so it's a tax write-off. We only use the Vz Wireless at the Fort and occasionally on the road. If we're traveling, we look for a Panera, McDonald's, Starbucks, etc....and take advantage of the free WiFi.

Prior to my DH needing internet access for his work, my Blackberry served me well. I have all-inclusive service thru Sprint.

MIFI is kind of like a wireless router. I think all of the cellular companies sell them.

MIFI is a Virgin Mobile broadband product (may be others). They resell service off the Sprint network. MIFI is an aggregator router. You can let several people connect to it via WIFI then send one connection out over the cellular data network. Virgin charges a flat fee for the month $40 for unlimited data.

Definitely better than the cost of renting a cable modem from the Fort once you overcome the cost of the MIFI itself and one month's service.:hippie:

PS-I think Shanman and others mention using a Cradlepoint router with a Sprint wireless USB data connection. It's basically the same sort of setup operationally; the thing is with MIFI you skip the months paying if you don't need it. But if you need this type of service (multiple connections at the same time for the span of a few days a couple times a year), this type of arrangement makes sense.

I too use MIFI. Mine is Verizon Wireless.
I have used it and will use it shortly at the Fort.
I travel alot and use it all the time. I love it. It is rare to have any problems with it.
I have driven all over the country and used it in motion on the road. IMHO it is great.
My plan costs about $60 a month. My job pays for it, Yay!

I finally gave up and swapped out my blackberry for a Droid X (Verizon) - comes with the mobile hotspot, I don't need any extra devices and it runs off my regular data plan. As long as I have digital service (always had good luck with Verizon coverage) I can connect my laptop and up to 4 other devices.

The one downside is that it eats up battery power which isn't great on the X anyway.

I just make sure to pack the car and house charger and we're good to go. :)

We switched to Sprints new Overdrive. Gets 4G where available. Orlando, yes. FW, ? We will see in a couple weeks.
