Wired Internet

I hate to ask this question but I don't know the answer.

We are heading to Disney on Friday and I would like to take my computer since I understand that DVC members now have free internet. My internet provider is comcast high speed internet. My question is would I be able to connect via hard wire to the internet with my laptop?

Yup, they usually even have a cable in the closet, but I would bring your own. I would bring a 14' if your have one, so you can easily reach the coffee table. Plug in the cable, boot up, click on explorer, agree to the terms, and your online. :surfweb:

There's really no need to bring your cable. If it is missing from the closet, call mousekeeping, since one is supposed to be in a bag on a hanger. If you are set up for webmail from Comcast, you'll be all set to use it at WDW. Have fun!

Something to consider, i took my wireless router with me and it worked like a champ. We had two laptops with us, so we were able to have more than one person online. I filed a trip report daily from the balcony while others napped.

We do this also. Works great and you do not have to be tethered to the port. I love being able to sit on the balcony in the morning while DW is still asleep and check my email and the Dis.

Thanks so much for your respones. I really am computer literate but I am beginning to feel that I am falling behind with technology.

Don't tempt me with the wireless. I do have a wireless router at home but I am too afraid to disconnect it. I did set it up but I really don't know what I did. I had someone on the phone who walked me through the installation.

I can't wait. We leave TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For about $40-$50 you can buy a little travel router for your next trip. I use a D-Link DWL-G730AP and it is so simple. You just set it to the router setting, plug it in to the outlet and you are ready to go. Leave the one at home and take one that is no bigger than a cigarette pack. Good Luck and enjoy your time home.

on a related note: I recently picked up one of those new iphones (3g model). I'm quite excited to browse the web and check email while in line for rides. Perhaps I'll make a post while riding splash mountain!! :thumbsup2

We just returned from a last minute trip to SSR. We usually get a dedicated 2 bdrm but this time all that was available was a lock out. There was a cable in each unit. Worked out well as I had my laptop in the one bedroom portion and DD had hers in the studio lock-off. I called and asked if we would be charged for second internet connection and was was told we would not be (and we weren't).

I recently bought a wireless router, thinking I'd be able to do wireless at DVC. But, will it work without being plugged in to a modem? I was hoping to only take 1 laptop on my solo trips, and be able to get online without being tethered to the wall.....is that possible? Also, when it's the 2 of us, I'd like us each to be able to get online without being tethered.

We used this on our trip at SSR - worked great:

We had this at home and it wasn't getting used, so we actually left it in our Owner's Locker for future trips. It's not the cheapest thing out there, but like I said we had it already.

edited to add -- you just attach the Ethernet cable provided by Disney to the jack in the wall and then to the router and you should be all set. Does that answer your question, Sue?

The router I bought (in addition to the one we use at home) is a Belkin. From looking at the instructions, it calls for a separate modem, the router, and a computer...all 3 have to be hooked up. I know at home we have a modem from Embarq, then a router which lets us get online from laptops throughout the house. I may have gotten a router that needs some type of other modem?? I may have to check the Belkin website - see if I can figure this out there :confused3 I HATE computer stuff, lol!

How do you set it (ie my laptop) to the router setting. I know you connect the cable to the internet outlet in the wall in the master bedroom, and plug the other connection into the D-Link router. But how do you set it to the router setting?

I am 98.5% sure that you do not need a modem to make your Belkin work. Most home broadband service is either Cable or DSL, both of which require a modem to "filter" the internet from their other respective services. At Disney I am pretty sure that they are using a simple CAT5 network, so plugging your router into the wall will be just like plugging it into a modem.

I hope I made that explanation as simple as possible.

I also am no networking expert (LOL!), but that's how it worked with our Apple airport -- nothing other than that and the cable were needed. We've taken other routers we have to other places (people's homes) and plugged it into their modem, but at WDW that wasn't needed.

Of course, your laptop needs wireless capability as well, but unless it's 10 years old, I don't think that would be an issue.

When we stayed at Beach Club in late May in a studio, the connection by the table didn't work, so I looked behind the phone table between the bed and the sofa and found the router right there. Turned out that the router didn't work properly so they had to come replace it... I tried troubleshooting with their tech folks on the phone and they had me plug in directly to the router that was behind the phone table. So I bet you can plug in a wireless router right into it if that's a better place to locate your router.

This particular travel router has three settings. I don't remember the other two for sure, but there is one that says just "RT", or router. It is on the underside of the unit.

You would need a modem if you were at home because by going wireless, you would in essence be starting your own home network. At Disney or any other resort/motel, you are already on a network. This network has it's own modem and your room is just one of it's terminals. Thus you just plug in your router since your room is already wired to the modem.

Just make sure you check your bill. I just stayed at OKW for 2 5 night stays. The first week, I was charged twice for the internet connection. I had to go to the front desk and they credited my account. The second week, one charge showed up on the bill but it was automatically credited.
