Wine drinking on board

You can definitely bring a previously-opened bottle to dinner - they're not going to turn you away. In fact, if you have your server open a bottle at dinner one night and then fail to finish it off, you can bring it back the next night (or they will keep it and bring it to your table the next night) and you won't be charged corkage a second time. You can also bring a glass of wine to dinner without extra charge, and that can come from a bottle in your room, of course.

However, if you open the bottle in your room just to avoid the corkage fee (totally intending to drink it at dinner), that's allowed, just a little on the shady side, IMHO. The server will still end up with most of the work, and DCL will lose the profit (from either corkage or the marked-up wine list) by allowing guests to bring their own wines onboard. I know, we're all paying a lot for the cruise, it's only $17, etc., but they could always just disallow us from bringing wine at all - and we'd be stuck with their shorter wine list. No thanks!

This is all IMHO (and my DH's as well) - like tipping, it's up to each individual.

The wine glasses we had in our room were glass - but I think we picked them up in a restaurant one evening. I'm not sure what your stateroom host would provide. I wish we had received one of those DCL corkscrews as a souvenir- we brought our own. Oh well!
My intention isn't to avoid the corkage fee, never was that mentioned... We are very healthy tippers and will not skimp when it's deserved. I will be drinking most of the wine myself as my hubby isn't too fond of it, so if I have one already opened, there's no need for me to buy one there, or open another one. I just like to know what my options are. I'd like to have one of the corkscrews as a souvenier also!! I'll have to keep that in mind.

We are planning on bringing our wine onboard, and packing the corkscrew in with the wine.

I don't think I would feel comfortable bringing an open bottle to the table, but maybe a glass would be okay - (one for each course??)

Ofiesty4u and Laurarn - we are in Hickory - live across the cove from Dale Jarrett -- get to listen to the helicopter come and go on race weekends --

I was going to change my signature to:
"Former yankee, Southern Belle by marriage", but in thinking about it, it takes a lot more than marriage to make a true Southern Belle!! And, I have never gotten a definitive answer as to whether or not San Francisco is "THE NORTH".

Ofiesty4u - how do you like NJ??

Last time I looked it was just San Francisco, can't really even call it the West, 'cause Colorado is the "West". And from a native Coloradoan, NJ isn't something to like, it is just a reeeeaaaallllly strange accent. As my kids said on a visit to WDW when NJ was on break "What language are they speaking?".

Hmmmm... Has anyone really brought a glass of their own wine to dinner? I love Provence-style dry rose in hot weather, but DCL had no such animal. (And Chef's de France at WDW charges an outrageous mark-up.) Tempting....

The corkage fee that Disney charges is not just to open the bottle. If you bring any wine to dinner, that was not purchased from your serving team, you will be charged a corkage fee by the team to handle the wine. This charge covers handling the wine, bringing glasses, etc. and is not a charge only for opening the bottle.

Although I have not encountered this first-hand, our dinner companions at our table on a previous cruise did.

Abitjaded -- I guess it all depends on your perspective.

In the south, you are either from "around here" meaning the south, or you are from "The North". I spent my first few years trying to explain to people that I am not from "The North", but from California (which in many cases proved to be much worse than being from "The North").

I am also curious whether a glass of wine has been brought to dinner - that is what I was planning on doing, but if that proves to be de riguer, then I will think otherwise.

This is another problem with being from California - the price charged for wine east of the Rockies!!

How do I like NJ? Let's just use my favorite saying that applies whenever anyone asks me... "The things you do for love". :p

I knew a few guys from Hickory once... we went and visited him and had a nice time at a party down on the water... big party if I remember correctly... *trying to remember his name*

ps. I LOVE San Francisco!!! My hubby and I have friends there...

My DH and I grew up in Philly. We've been here in NC for 7 yrs. We love it here. We've lived in different parts of the Southeast for 11 years total.
Laura
ps. We're on the 2 day countdown now!!!!

Ofiesty4u - we were at Topsail over the summer. Watched two women (probable early 60's) from NJ discuss the fact that shoppers did not move as quickly down the isles, etc.

I am sure you can fill in the rest. I have an SIL who lives in Gillette, NJ, from Columbia, SC. She has practiced your favorite saying hour after hour, I am sure. ::yes::

Laurarn - Yeah!! I don't think I could contain myself - which ship and where? children? Do you still practice nursing? Where?

Have a friend from dh's med school class who is pediatrician in Mooresville, I think.

I'm familiar with the type... :teeth:

My parents used to take my brother and I to topsail area, then we settled into Atlantic Beach for the summers... I miss the BEACH in NC, you know of course it's called "the shore" up here, for whatever reason.

Grumpy's Mom: We're sailing on the Wonder this Sunday with our 3 kids...DS12,DD10,DD5. I work in OB with newborns and their moms. Love it!
We leave in 2 hrs. for Florida! Take care everyone and thanks for the great advice. I'll give a trip report when I get back.

Laurarn,

You don't by any chance work at LNRMC do you? My mother works in the surgical center there. It always suprises me what a small world the DIS is.
