Windows xp verses Windows 7

I have a laptop with windows xp on it. It works fine, just needs a new battery. For some reason Dh thought I should have a new laptop for Christmas, so he bought me this big honking laptop that must weigh 30 pounds. I think it has a 17 inch screen. And it's a windows 7. My dd said they are hard to get used to and not as good as an xp.
Anyone have any experience with this? Still baffled by why he bought the new laptop. Maybe he got a deal he could not refuse.

While I do like Windows XP, I didn't have any problems when I switched over to Windows 7. I don't think it is that hard to get used to at all.

Have you asked him why he bought a new laptop for you? Have you looked into returning it if you are unhappy with it?

Getting a new battery would have been a easy fix. I buy new laptop batteries on eBay about once a year for the various Dells we have in the family. Run about $25-40 ea depending on capacity (not Dell OEM .. just generic batteries.)

XP has been working fine for us and the only drawback has been that we can't upgrade Internet Explorer past IE8. Some websites give us compatibilty warnings, so we just use Firefox in those instances.

Oldest daughter has the newest laptop and it came with an upgrade to Win 7. She likes it fine and it didn't take long to get used to it. I do some maintenance on it for her (defrag, optimize registry, update virus cheker, etc) and had no problem navigating around.

When I asked Dh why he got me a laptop instead of just a battery for the one I have, he did say something about not being able to upgrade the one that I have. I just keep thinking about all the other things I could have bought with the money that he spent on the new laptop - including a Kindle Fire.

I had upgraded to Windows 7 and lost three major items of functionality, so I had XP reinstalled on my computer.

1. I have an HP Color Laserjet all-in-one. I lost the ability to do scans and also to see the status of the four cartridges.

2. I have a HP B&W Laserjet. I lost the ability to print multiple copies, no matter what software I was using or how I set the controls.

3. I still, on occasion, use some old MS-DOS-based programs. With W/7 I was unable to go to full-screen mode for DOS window.

if you do not like the new computer just get a new battery for the old laptop and let the hubby have the new computer. there is nothing wrong with win xp. it is a perfectly fine os. ms is trying to get everybody to convert over but xp is the most used os on the planet. as far as why he bought it...some times guys buy gifts for others in the hopes they will not like it and the will be able to keep it themselves...

I really like Windows 7. Microsoft seems to "hit" with every other OS, and Vista was the "miss" between the two good editions (XP & 7). There are some issues with older peripherals but not as many as Vista had, and as far as usability I think 7 is the best edition of Windows in quite some time.

Did you check online for updates to your printer software? Both my color all-in-one and my black laserjet function perfectly with my Windows 7 computer.

My laptop has windows 7 which I bought to upgrade since Vista was giving me problems. No problems getting use to it. I am having problems with scanning from my HP photosmart printer but I just scan to a memory card instead of directly to the computer... no big deal for me. Printing has no problems.

I bought a new battery on Amazon for under $50.... extended battery time. Generic, no problem. I did these 2 things to save money.

My ideal thing would be to upgrade to a new laptop. More to consider than operating system. Hard drive and memory are a big thing. Maybe your DH thought you would want the computer to be faster and hold more documents.

I have just switched as well. I do not like windows 7. XP seems to me to be very intuitive where windows 7 never ever anticipates my needs. I have also used Vista and did not have any problems, but this windows 7 is really getting me down. I notice the older I get, the less I appreciate change. Maybe that is part of the problem?

We got a new computer this year that came with Windows 7. Our old computer had Windows XP. While 7 has a few features I like, most of my old games won't run on it!

Not only did I check online, but I even paid HP for some tech support.

No problems at all here with Windows 7.......If you really don't want a new laptop, I would talk to your dh and return it.

My Color Laserjet all-in-one is a CM1312nfi MFP and my B&W is a Laserjet 1300.

My black and white is a Laserjet 1300 as well, actually the 1300n. I did not do an upgrade to Windows 7. I bought a Windows 7 system in early 2010 and have been using my 1300 ever since. It prints any number of copies, actually from either of the Windows 7 systems on the home network. My son upgraded his system to 7, and he can print to the 1300. I don't remember whether I installed from the original disks or from software from the HP site, but it works fine. I wish I could tell you why yours did not work.
I think Windows 7 is great.

I had no issues 'learning' and getting used to Windows 7. I like it. Haven't had any issues getting our printer to work with any of the 4 computers we are running with Windows 7 either. Everything works great

There is nothing wrong with XP but support for it is being phased out-meaning no updates-no new drivers, no new software installs, your anti-virus will stop supporting virus signatures. No new security patches so on and so on. in the long run adapting to Windows 7 would be the best options

My boyfriend's computer has Windows 7. He runs a box for Windows XP and one for Linux in case he needs them (and to also safely open anything he is unsure about). I just think he can't make up his mind!

Windows XP is old technology and will be unsupported very soon.

If you go to the Microsoft website, it even tells you that the end date for PC sales with XP preinstalled was October 22, 2010.

Window 7 really isn't difficult to get used to at all.

The issue we've had with Windows 7 is that our printers no longer network to each other. Each computer needs it's own printer now. We've never been able to figure out why. We have 2 computers that still have XP on them, and DD's laptop has Windows 7. My computer (XP) won't download files if they've been sent to me using Widows 7 Office and some .pdf files. I have the latest addition of Adobe, too.

So I'm seeing that eventually I'll need to either install Windows 7 on my computer or get a new system.
