Just curious what everyone is doing for their home pc that still has win XP running. Are you shopping for a new pc, and found any good deals?

Why don't you upgrade to Windows 8 on your current PC? That's what I did and it's a good replacement for xp.

In my opinion, there are two worlds when it comes to computers and software. The geek world, and the real world.

My son is a geek and works in computer IT. In his mind, while he was in school, there was nothing but the latest releases. Now that he is working in the industry, and his firm has clients running Windows 95 and Windows 98 SE, he has discovered in the real world, cheapest is often the dictating factor in software. And as his boss points out, the Windows 95 and 98 SE clients have never called to have a software issue resolved which are covered under their service agreement. Their calls are always printer repairs, or keyboards calls that are billable (and therefore profitable).

DS was also horrified to take his car in for a SMOG check and see the system being used ran on Windows 3.1 :rotfl2:

So, Windows XP will live on, on millions of computers owned by users who have no reason to upgrade.

Windows XP isn't going to suddenly shut itself off! If your computer is running fine and does what you need it to do, why buy a new one?

Windows XP is just being desupported. Desupported means that if any new bugs or issues with the software are found, that they won't be fixed. Also, software developers will not test new software or upgrades on it, so over time, you will find it harder and harder to get programs you may want, etc.

Your computer is likely to run just fine for quite awhile yet. But since your computer is running Windows XP, your hardware is probably also older (in relative computer terms) so it is most likely slower, has less memory, has less disk space, etc. If you feel like performance is an issue for you, then I would start watching for a good deal on a new system and not invest any money in repairing your existing system should something break - but I wouldn't run out and buy something today, just wait for a deal that's too good to pass up. If you feel performance is not an issue on your current system, then you should consider upgrading to Windows 8 - AFTER you carefully check the system requirements to make sure your system is capable of running it effectively. The increased disk space and memory requirements may push a system that runs well now over the edge so it is a dog after the upgrade.

I would consider upgrading to Windows 7 if you really feel like you want to upgrade but would skip Windows 8. W8 is designed for mobile devices and in true Microsoft fashion it is the bad version before the next decent version. I would either go 7 or wait until what comes after 8.

If you can. Not all old computers can do it.

Go to the Microsoft support site. They have a program that will check your machine and advise if you can or not load windows 8.

I have a Mac at home but use a PC for work. I had windows XP at my previous place of employment but I am starting a new business and had to purchase my own computer. The majority of computers out there if you had to purchase new are windows 8. I purchased one and spent 3 days with it and wanted to throw it in the river. I absolutely HATE windows 8. I returned it and ordered a computer from HP who still had a few new offerings with windows 7. If you are happy with windows xp, then I see no reason you would need to buy a computer to simply have a newer version. Like another poster said, you could just buy a new windows version and upgrade your current computer.

If however you end up purchasing a new computer, please make sure you try out windows 8 before you purchase OR check their return policy. It is a drastic change and if you are like me, you will not like it in the least.

That would be Windows 8.1, which has been released. It works fine, especially if you buy a touchscreen computer.

If you plan to continue to run Windows XP, make sure you keep your Antivirus running and up-to-date!!!!

Since Microsoft will no longer patch flaws, many a malicious entity are just waiting ...
