Besides the 64 bit capabilities, why buy it? All it appears to be is a bunch of eye candy and neat things we already have in third party formats. Wouldn't it be smarter to just re-release windows xp with 64 bit capabilities?

I know, and it gives me an excuse to add 4 gigs of RAM to my computer and dual AMD processors ;) . I just don't see why an entirely new OS is needed.

Here are a few of the new and/or improved items in Vista. Game stuff is listed under Home tab. Looks like a few other things there too, on the Everyone, Home and Business tabs. BTW, you can add ram now.

I know, but it gives me an excuse because for the most part after 2 gigs its useless, unless you are running 64 bit.

I know, but I am a gamer and would like 64 bit capabilities.
I believe you just answered your own original question.

I know, I meant why does microsoft bother to spend millions on eye-candy? I would be happy with a 64 bit windows XP.

First, I suspect you wouldn't be happy spending $150 to upgrade to a 64-bit version of XP, with all of XP's multimedia limitations, and lack of native support for the latest technology.

Second, Microsoft needs to market to the broader market, not just a single, individual user, like yourself.

Makes sense, although I really wouldn't mind giving 150$ to microsoft for a 64 bit XP after all the money I will have to spend to get my hardware to where it needs to be for a 64 bit system.
