Where are the controls for what applications start when the computer is started?

I've been in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and it's not there.

I've looked under All Users, Common, Me, Default. Nothing.

The most offensive applications are AIM and MSNMessenger.

Where are they hiding?

Thanks,
Ronda

Go to Start at the bottom left of your screen.

Click on Control Panel or My Computer, Control Panel.

Click on Add/Remove Programs. Check to see if the offensive applications are there.

ETA: I just re-read your post. I may not have given you the info you are looking for .... unless you are wanting to delete these applications.

Dang it. I posted once and the power flickered making it disappear.

To prevent MSN and AIM from loading at startup you must go to:

MSN - Tools > Options > General
AIM - My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences > Sign On/Off

uncheck the option to load at Windows startup.

I would like to know this too. DS uses AIM and it starts everytime I turn on the computer, it is a pain to have to wait for it to start up since I am not going to use it.

I don't have AIM so I can't check this but can you do the same thing by right clicking on the icon and check something under preferences or properties?

Just curious.

Start >RUN type MSCONFIG - OK that will bring up System Con Util. last tab is Startup

If I use MSCONFIG, the next restart brings a warning about how I've made changes. There's an offer to undo that and go back. Is that more sneakiness from junk resource suckers like MusicMatch and QuickTime that sit in the system tray?

No it's just a warning letting you know you changed it it's ok

I was able to stamp out AIM and MSNMessenger by using the controls in those applications. The only difference from what iNTeNSeBLue98 has above is in AIM.

On AIM Triton it's Edit -> Settings -> Sign In/Sign Out

Thanks again.

I think I still have the old version of AIM, haven't used it recently. Yep, 5.9.

Thanks. Now, can you refresh my memory about the ONLY things you're SUPPOSED to have running? I remember a list from my old dialup days, but don't remember what was on it.

I was told the only things you need on startup was your anti -v and firewalls and things you see you want. Remember it's just start up not whats on your system .

I had a completely blank line I just redid mine about a week ago So I have my weather, norton,Ding and some of the common files thats about it maybe my Picasa pic.sw

Good information! Let me ask....my DS has always had MSN IM on his computer and he uses it constantly with his friends. He has XP and he recently upgraded the IM. Now, he seems to have 2 verisions of MSN IM on his computer...the old one and the new one! He can't figure out what happened! The old one starts up in the bar at the bottom of the screen and, even if you exit it, the new one will sign on invisibly when he goes onto the internet. He has tried to uninstall the old one and he can't seem to get rid of it! Any ideas?? :confused3

Also, check the box to not show that warning again. If you do make changes again at some point in the future, the screen will come back, giving you that option again. If you want the change, check the box and then ok.

Is he opening Outlook or Outlook Express too?

Go through WINDOWS Messenger Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck the option to run at startup. This can be found by going through IE and selecting Tools > Windows Messenger. Do this for both WINDOWS Messenger and MSN Messenger (Tools > Options > General) if he doesn't want either to run when he signs on to the computer. Also uncheck MSN Today if he doesn't want the news window to open.

:scratchin I don't know, I'll have to ask him about the Outlook being open. Thanks for the detailed steps....he'll appreciate it very much! :goodvibes

I only asked because Outlook/Outlook Express and Hotmail are MS products and will open MSN Messenger unless you tell them otherwise.
