I know this is a really silly question but does anyone know how to make windows automatically open full screen? Mine always open as a smaller box and it's just annoying to have to maximise every time. :badpc: I'm sure it must be something really simple but I can't work it out!! Thank you!!! I use XP by the way.

No idea to do with windows I'm afraid.

As an aside, Internet Explorer users on Windows machines can press F11 to get a full screen view of the internet :)

Dependent on your set up, if you maximise your explorer window, then close down the windows explorer, the next time you open explorer you should have a full screen (though this doesn't always work of course!)

Yup, Richard is quite right.

Just maximise an IE window to full, then close it. Windows should remember what size it was when it was last closed, and it should open to full next time. (like Richard, i emphasise the word SHOULD! :earboy2: )

If you're using an early version of IE on say Windows 98, also check this. Open an IE window, select Tools, then internet options. Click the advanced tab, and under the browsing section, you should see something along the lines of "Launch Internet Explorer full screen", put a check in that if there isnt one and OK it.

Thank you for your suggestions :sunny: - nothing works so far - except the F11 button. Guess I'll just have to keep maximising!!

Right click on screen icon for desired program

select properties
then shortcut tab
then in Run: puldown, select maximized

Andrew

Thank you - this looks promising and works for some programs but how do I get my desktop icons to do that as there is no Run pulldown. Am I looking in the wrong place? :) (You've probably realised by now that I'm only barely computer literate!!! :confused3

Do you have your windows explorer icon showing on the "bottom" line next to the start button? If so, when you right click that it will show you the "short-cut" tab...after you've clicked on properties.

When I open Internet Explorer a box with its name appears in the bottom bar but right-clicking just produces the options of restore, minimise/maximise or close. If I maximise it it still opens in a small window the next time. There's no "properties" offered. Thanks for trying to help me - I must be a hopeless case!! :wave2:

Sorry, I meant right on the left hand side of the task bar. Sometimes (again dependent on set up) icons are placed there for "quick start" purposes.

The other option we could go through is if I personally e-mail you and attempt to correct the issue through netmeeting (which only takes a couple of minutes to set up). :badpc:

It's really good of you to go to all this trouble Richard - I do appreciate it!! :sunny: I've no idea what a net meeting is but please go ahead if you don't mind!!

Hi Diana,

Hope you're getting it sorted.

See if you have a shortcut link to Internet Explorer on your desktop, it'll say Internet Explorer and look like a big blue letter e. If you see that on the desktop, right click it and select properties. On the shortcut tab you'll see some info, near the middle itll have lines saying "start in", "shortcut key", "run" and "comment". Click the little drop down arrow on the end of the line where it says "RUN" and change the selection to maximized. Click apply and then ok. Then try opening internet explorer again.

If you don't see a shortcut for internet explorer on your desktop, just open up windows explorer (right click the Start button bottom left and select explore). I don't know how used to windows explorer you are, so forgive me if im telling you things you already know. Anyway you'll see 2 big windows inside the windows explorer window. The left is longer vetically, and the right hand pane is bigger. On the left side, click your local hard drive (should be C, so itll say Local Disk (C: ). . Click where it says that. A new list will appear in the right hand window, look on there and find a folder called Program Files. Double click where it says that on the right window, and another list will come up. On that list, scroll down til you see a new folder called Internet Explorer. Again double click that to get into the IE folder. Youll see some files and folders, and a file called IEXPLORE. Right click that file, move your mouse down to SEND TO, and then select DESKTOP (CREATE SHORTCUT) on the list of options that then appears. A shortcut to IE will appear on the desktop, now just go thru the first step to make it open maximized. Then just browse to Dis as usual.

I know this sounds all longwinded, but in real life, its just a few steps. I've just detailed it step by step not knowing how well you know your way around windows. Hope you get it all sorted.

Hi Paul!! :sunny: Thank you so much for taking so much time and trouble to help me - I really do appreciate it!! :worship: You were right to give me such detailed instructions - I need it!!!
I did everything you suggested and I can get Google to open up full screen but whatever it is I'm searching Google for (such as the DIS!!) opens up in a small window. Is there any way to get those to open up full screen every time?
Thanks again Rich, Richard, Andrew and Paul for your patience!!! Computers know when they're dealing with a technophobe!!! :badpc:

Hi Diana,

That's not a prob....all here to help each other :goodvibes

I'm not sure what you mean about the Dis opening in a small window after u use google for it...it should stay in the same windowand not open in a different one.

What you could do is set the Dis to be your homepage so when you open an IE window it will go straight there and (hopefully!!) be full screen. To do this, go to the main front end of Dis (www.disboards.com). When its loaded, select Tools at the top of the IE window, then Internet Options. You should see a box, and it should be on the General tab. A box at the top has your current homepage in it, and 3 boxes under that which say "use current" "use default" and "use blank". While being on the Dis, select that and choose "use current", which will make the Dis your new homepage and everytime you open a full screen new IE window, the Dis should load up there and then. At least you'll be able to see Dis in all its glory if nothing else!

Hope this helps and you could make sense of that (Im reading it back and wondering how I managed to pass my English exams lol)

I meant that whatever it is I'm searching Google for (such as the DIS!!) opens up in a minimised window on top of the Google window.
I've tried making the DIS my homepage and went through all the instructions from your previous post but it's still opening up as a minimised window.
Never mind - I'll just have to stick with it but, once again, thank you SOOOOO much for your help - your instructions were very clear!! :sunny:

Hi again Diana,

I'm still not sure what exactly is happening, but I've noticed you mention results from using google...well I just looked into it and found something you can check

When you're on google, you'll see the word preferences just to the right of the text box. Click that, and scroll down to the bottom and see if theres a check in where it says "open search results in a new window". If there is, remove it and click save preferences. That way any google search should end in the results being displayed in the same window.

Give that a try and let me know

Paul

The box wasn't checked. Never mind - don't give yourself a headache over it!!! The computer knows I'm an amateur!!! :teeth: Many thanks for your help!! :cool1:
Great photo by the way!!

Thanks!!...I'm not really grumpy...it just looks that way :earboy2:

As for the prob, I still havent a clue, its probably one of those things that could be a number of different things. It might be better to discuss as a conversation rather than waiting for people to post here, so either sort with Richard about chatting on netmeeting or if you or someone in the house uses msn messenger, PM me and I'll tell you my msn name and you can add me (or vice versa) and we can discuss it 1-1 and hopefully get it sorted!

Paul

This man is a genius!!! Got my problem sorted in no time - what a star!!!!! So, once again Paul

LOL...flattery will get you everywhere! :earboy2:

Anytime Diana. Looking forward to a 6 hour Dis-chat! (99% of the people I know, its always "oh, he's talking about Orlando again....let's walk off slowly and hope he doesn't notice" !)
