OK. We are finally going camping this weekend to Fairy Stone Park in VA. Short trip, but DH doesn't want to risk a longer trip towing the pop up, because of what happened in December. I am taking the window air unit from our garage.
Which is the best way to "use" it? Can I put the whole unit "in" the camper on the counter open the window and just let the back of the unit exhaust through the screen and cover the remaining opening of the window. Or...Bring a ladder and using a board to prop the whole unit outside, like it does in a regular window at the smaller bunk end where the screen can be opened? I hope I described this well enough, but I want to be safe. Out side prop is probably the safest, but I would have to bring the ladder and it would "look" funny. Inside mount, nobody but us would see it, but I am afraid of the exhaust. What do you think. Love camping, but I won't do it in the hot heat ever again, I want air for relief. I can be outside but I want a place to go that we can cool off if we need to. THANKS for suggestions!!

Im no expert....but Im fairly sure that as long as the exhaust and condensation is going outside, you'll be a-ok. I was going to use a window unit, but decided at the last minute to exchange it for the portable unit simply because it was more convenient to set up in a tenting situation.

Which portable did you use? Did it work well in a tent?

We used a "Haier", from Walmart...it was GREAT at night...but didnt really stand a chance against the daytime heat....but if ya keep the tent zipped up tight...it did keep it about 10 degrees cooler, and that 10 degrees is a noticeable difference!! The remote broke on the second day.so we had noway to adjust the thermostat and the tent got down to 69 degrees at night....we had to bundle up.

I just made an awning for it and it works...YEH!! Tonight I will try both set ups with the ac. DH has to pick it up for me. I just don't have the $ to buy a portable right now. I wouldn't mind one of those. It would help in the garage, we have that set up as DHs room, Gold's gym, pool table etc so the extra cool down would help. Thanks so far.

Ok help me out too. We just got a pop up and DH does not want to take it to WDW becasue of the heat. Can we get a portable AC and use it in the PUP? HOw doe we set up the eshaust? What is the best brand and where do I get it. sounds like DH will be getting an AC for Christmas. And I will get additional time at WDW in June or July. :cool1:

The exhaust hose is not very big. Just run it out under the canvas somewhere. You can get a portable AC at Wal-Mart, Target, Sears.

I was looking at the portable AC units and WOW close to $300 bucks... And they take up lots of room.... We would really ahve to re-evaluate everything we bring to get it.

We are tenting up in Wisconsin again next weekend, and it could be hot. Our plan is stay in the lake until the sun goes down lol

I was just looking online at Wal-Mart and they are a little pricey. I think I'll stick with my Wind Tunnel fan and water activities during the day.

Wait until the season is over, the prices will drop, I saw that last year. Lowes also had a few scratch and dents.

Looks like I will wait until Sept or Oct and pick one up at Lowes, Menards etc. Then I have to find a big red bow and wait to put it under the tree. WDW here we come.

I don't think I would try and do that and if you really feel the need for AC get one of the portable ones. The normal window units need to be flush with the wall since the air that is exhausted out the back is drawn in from the sides and all those vent areas shouldn't be covered up unless you want a fire from overheating.

Thanks Larry. I didn't think of that. Well after trying both options we have decided to try the outside mount through the small bunk end window. We will actually do a flush outside mount using the ladder and board. Thanks for your input y'all.

Man, DH is giving me grief! I want to sleep comfortable, he doesn't mind being hot...that's why he gets to sleep in the tent. We have decided on doing an outside mount just like the AC boot. Just wish I had something better than a ladder to put it on. I should have time to sew one tomorrow before we go. Nothing like last minute.

Another problem with the window AC being completely inside is the condensate water that will drip out the back of the unit. If you have it indoors you will need a way to catch it. If you set it outdoors on a ladder or platform it would be better. You might try placing a piece of wood between the ladder and the side of the pup. That would give you a larger platform to set it on and a more secure point to steady it. You could secure the wood with a couple of screws or the old faithful - duct tape.

My dh just put a window unit in our pop up 4th of July weekend. We used suggestions from this forum and some of the rv forums recommended by othes on here.

He cut a hole in the front, he had to reinforce the box for the unit with extra wood, and he allowed for the condensation to drip off. We used it to camp in Hershey last week and it worked great. Of course we weren't in the trailer during the day, but I had my sleeping bag around me at night. As the sun rose in the morning I could feel the bed heating up. He also installed a box fan as a ceiling fan to circulate the air because of the unit being near the floor. We needed to pull the cooler air up and push the heat down.

Good luck!
