Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has gone on a Windjammer Cruise? We have been on several cruises on RCC & Holland America but never anything like a Windjammer.
How was it? Pros & Cons? Would it be better if we went as a group? Which boat? What ports?
Anything would really help.

ThankYou!!!!!:)

We went on windjamer for our honeymoon. When we pulled up to the boat I thought I was going to die. It looked like it was going to sink. It was all a suprise for me. So I had no time to prepare. It was alot of fun the 3 p's party was fun. We went from nassau to freeport or maybe the other way around. It's been so long I've forgotten  We like the relaxed atmosphere. I loved not having to dress up for dinner. If you get sea sick easy you may need something. the boat was small enough we felt waves expecially whe we were eating dinner and the chandileers were swinging. The boat we were on went down in a hurricane a few years after we were on it. Dont worry the passagers got off, but our sweet captian went down with his boat.

We did a Windjammer honeymoon too. We sailed the Flying Cloud in the British Virgin Islands in 1999. It was great!! I have only been on one other cruise- a Carnival 4 day cruise, that I probably wouldn't repeat.

Pros:
*very casual- no dressing up for dinner, although my DH did get lightly chastised one morning for not wearing a shirt in the dining room.
*if you care to, you can help raise the sails. Most people did this the first day only, but it was fun.
*smaller ships=less people. The chances of hanging out with your fellow passengers making new lasting friendships is better on the smaller ship.
*smaller ships=smaller ports of call. The Windjammers can pull into ports that can't handle the large cruise ships. We saw some really unique places.
*RUM PUNCH!! 5 o'clock every day- Free rum punch on deck!

Cons:
*if you are prone to seasickness, you will be more affected on a Windjammer than a big cruise ship. I am very sensitive to seasickness, so I was very worried about this. How I got talked into a sailing honeymoon, I will never remember. I felt a little nauseous on the first night, but took a dramamine and went to sleep. Next morning, I had my sea legs and it never bothered me again that trip. Some other people on the boat had those prescription patches behind their ears and reported they worked well. I didn't hear one report of seasickness after the first day.
*menu choices- if you are very picky, this may be a problem. They usually have 2 choices at each meal
*cabin size- one word- SMALL! Every cruise ship's cabins are small, but windjammers take it to an extreme. We had a honeymoon room so it had a queen bed, it hit 3 walls. If you book a standard room, there is a better than average chance that you will be in bunkbeds, although the lower berth is usually large enough for 2. Top berth good for storing suitcases.

Overall, we had a great time, and would recommend it. Especially if you are an active and laid back type of person. If you like to be waited on and like the frills of a big cruise ship, it is probably not for you. We are planning to go back for our 10 yr anniversary.

BTW, stczt- you were on the Fantome? Did you get the book The Ship and the Storm? We were in planning mode for our honeymoon when that happened- it was so sad.

Sorry for the novel, OP. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

We did a Windjammer for our honeymoon in 2001. It was awesome!
We sailed from St. Thomas through the Virgin Islands (St. John, Buck Island, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, etc.)

TinkerbEllnor summed it up pretty well. Especially the cabin size. We had an upgraded honeymoon room also with a queen bed. I joke that there wasn't any room in our cabin to do anything, you could literally open the door and jump into bed...and the bathroom cracked me up as well, it's the only time I've seen a showerhead that sprays directly onto the toilet.
I really loved the ports of call - it was great going to islands that weren't huge and over-run by large cruise ships.

As far as seasickness goes, because it is a sailing ship, most people don't have as much problem with seasickness as they would on a boat that doesn't have sails. I didn't have any problems, but then again, I hardly ever do.

I think our fellow ship-mates were all pretty nice, good to talk with in the evenings, and in general we had some things in common.

If I could afford it - I would take a Windjammer cruise every year! It was one of the best experiences I've had. I hope to go back someday.

Thankyou ladies for the info.....I decided on the ship Polynesia for November 2007 and she will be in dry dock for rehab.....back to the drawing board. My husband really wants to do this so I was going to give it to him for his next birthday.....He loves sailing, diving, all that stuff. Myself I like books and snorkeling perhaps with a cocktail. I wanted a few other couples to come with us as a suprise but they are all really concerned about being sea sick so it looks like it will just be us.

Thanks again!

I've just finished my fourth windjammer. The polynesia is a great ship but is a little tired looking. You're husband will have the time of his life and if you like lazing about and snorkling you will also have the time of your life.

Just remember four words, Good Morning Captain Sir, you'll see what I mean!!!!

What boats have you been on? Thanks for all the info!

What everyone else has already said!!
We sailed on the Flying Cloud also for our honeymoon in 1991!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVED it.
DH wants to do a big ship, I have no desire... I want to go back on a Windjammer.

Just one more thing no one has pointed out - you get far less seasick on a sailing vessel than on a boat with no sails. Something about how the wind and the sails keep the ship from bouncing around in the waves. They explained it on the ship ... but I was drinking rum swizzlers. That's about all I remember.

Thanks!!! I am with you though the rum will block all that might ale you!!!;)
