I love both movies and both actors. I liked that the new one gave more info on Willy Wonka and the oompa loompa's. I can't say that I like one more than the other though they are equally entertaining their differences of style and content are both excellent. Johnny Depp portrayed Willy Wonka without letting any other character he has played before slip into this character. Whereas in Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka I can see young frankenstein in the charactor. Of the two actors I would have to say that Johnny Depp's portrayal was, not so much better, as I would say unique than Gene Wilder's portrayal.
Really, Hedy? I'm the total opposite. I prefer Gene Wilder's version and find the character loveable and gentle while Johnny Depp's version of Willy Wonka creeps me out.
I liked both movies, But the one with Gene Wilder is my favorite. I thought the second one was a bit creepy. When the dolls burn up when the enter the gates..

I LOVE Johnny Depp..but my heart belongs to Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. Maybe it's nostalgia, but that version of the movie was so endearing to me. He never creeped me out or scared me. Now JD, on the other hand, with his androgenous look did nothing for me. He and the new Oompalooma that they digitally reproduced over and over actually bothered me a lot. I did not see any thing Oscar worthy, maybe I have to rent it and give it another try.
I never thought I would like someone else playing Willy Wonka. Johny Depp did a great performance and proved me wrong. However it still doesn't compare to Gene's performance.
