It looks like we are going to be spending a week in Williamsburg in early June. I really need ideas of things/places within an hours drive that will entertain my wild and crazy 3 year old and my barely 6 year old. I'm sure we'll end up at Busch Gardens at least one day but I need some super cheap ideas too.

VA Beach is less than 1 hours' drive from Williamsburg. We always make that 1 day of our week. It's an easy day trip. :goodvibes:goodvibes

Do you have a place to stay? Ken Price from vacationupgrades.com is popular on the Orlando board for renting his Wyndham points for stays at Bonnet Creek near WDW but he can also rent at any Wyndham resort. We've been there twice by trading our timeshare week but non owners can easily rent points. I recommended him to a coworker and she loved him & the place. (Wyndham Kingsgate) She has 2 in college & 1 in HS so they really appreciated the extra space of a condo vs. cramming in a hotel room.

Also both times we went, they would be having a special, either directly on their website or through AAA, for 7-day ticket of BG and Water Country USA (their water park) for like $75 pp. It was a bargain. I think for $80 or so we also got admission to Colonial Williamsburg. Both times we bought our tickets in like March or April. Don't wait until school is out; by then the good deals were discontinued. ymmv.:goodvibes

I live about an hour from Williamsburg and get down there quite often with my children.

Water Country and BG are awesome and so much cheaper than Disney parks when you can do a week pass.

You are < 1 hour from Richmond. Maymont Park is beautiful and free. There's a children's zoo which is nice. Richmond also has great science and children's museums.

We will also be going to Williamsburg for a few nights on our drive home from the outer banks. It will be 4 years since we've gone to busch gardens. Love the water. Park! We will be staying at the governors inn again great price with free breakfast and pool. I will be checking out the website for tickets

Do you already know where you'll be staying? If not, what about the Great Wolf Lodge? I know it's not exactly budget accommodations, but the water park there would save you the cost of paying for water park tickets elsewhere. They have lots of free daily activities that aren't water-related as well.

Water Country USA and Bush gardens is my vote

Me too!! Those are great choices for that age range. OP, your children are young. If they were older, I'd say go to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Fort, some of the historic plantations along route 5, and the outlets. At their age, I'd spend 3 nights in Williamsburg, and then spend 3 nights in Virginia Beach.

I live about 25 minutes from "The Burg" in Newport News.
We have the Va Living Museum across the street is the SPCA with a petting zoo(very small). We have Newport News park that is very nice. Mariner's Museum which is close to the Living Museum.

Va Beach is a little more then an hour depending on traffic on interstate 64 .

Jamestown and Yorktown are close to Williamsburg.

Have a great visit.

We are owners at Marriott Manor Club. Really, really nice! I have stayed at Greensprings and liked it as well.

Busch Gardens has a Sesame Street section. The animal shows are very cool. It is a beautiful park with lots to do.

Water Country USA is an awesome water park. Lots to do, especially for young kids.

Jamestown has a lot of hands on for the kids, too.

Colonial Williamsburg is great, but good chance your kids might be bored. Consider doing Colonial Williamsburg in the am and Water Country in the afternoon.

Busch Gardens is a great choice. I've never known a child who doesn't love the train that goes around the property. Be prepared to ride around more than once. And then there's the horse barn in Scotland:-)

Be aware that Busch Gardens has a fair number of hills going from one "country" to another. Most of them aren't steep, but they can be tough on little legs.
